1. Identify the experiences Rizal had abroad that helped shape his
nationalist sensibilities.
Jose Rizal was sent abroad to study and write works of literature that
would illustrate the situation in the Philippines and the abuses of Spaniards. He
became a part of the Ilustrados in Madrid where he grew disappointed with his
companions. The Ilustrados initially wanted equal rights between the Indios and
Spaniards, however, Rizal in the film was depicted that he wants to have
independence from Spaniards. Another event with the Ilustrados was their talk
about having a president which took place in Madrid, January 1891. In the film,
Rizal wanted the president to decide what were the contents of La Solidaridad to
unite the actions of the people. However, a dispute grew due to a statement that
La Solidaridad was meant to be a private enterprise and not for the nation.
Rizal’s disappointment resulted in his decision to go back to the Philippines and
he reasoned that the real battle was in the Philippines.

In addition, Rizal had always identified himself as a Filipino even if he was

from a well-off family and had opportunities and priveleges most of his fellow
countrymen did not enjoy. Before his experiences abroad, he already had a
sense of nationalism. He has seen the grave injustice the Filipinos suffered in the
hands of the Spaniards. Because of his background, he was able to travel and
have the chance to study abroad, which resulted to him acting on his sense of
nationalism and doing whatever he could to fight for what the Filipinos deserved.
His experiences abroad urged him to fight with dignity and love for country.
2. Enumerate the different places that Rizal had been to and the people
he met on his travels who might have inspired him to be a
propagandist; and
In the film, even before Rizal left the country, he was already influenced
by his older brother, Paciano, to question the injustices the Filipinos experienced
under Spanish rule. Although he was more or less forced by Paciano to leave the
country to study medicine, and push for reforms that could free the country.
Rizal has been all over Asia and Europe in his travels abroad. Notably, he went to
Spain, Italy, Germany, France, Singapore, Austria, and Switzerland. The film did
not emphasize on his travels, but it did emphasize on his interactions with the
ilustrados. He was also curious as to why in Europe, people were free to speak
their mind, and air their grievances against the friars and the government, while
in the Philippines, it would cause him his life. In the film, his main motivation to
write his novels was some disagreements with his fellow ilustrados as they were
managing La Solidaridad. It was shown that after his disagreements with the
ilustrados, he went straight home to the Philippines, stating that the battle is not
overseas, but in the Philippines. The film also shows his hardships overseas, as
he was barely living by, due to problems experienced by his family regarding
their agricultural lands in Calamba. Historically, he was mostly influenced by
Ferdinand Blumentritt, whom he considers as his adviser. He has exchanged
letters and books with him over the span of many years. His novels were also
published thanks to Dr. Maximo Viola, who financed the publishing of the first
2000 copies of Noli Me Tangere. He also met Dr. Feodor Jagor, a scientist and
traveler in Berlin, which inspired his ideas that education would be the solution to
the injustices the Filipinos were experiencing under Spanish rule.

3. Assess the significance and success of Rizal’s mission abroad.

Rizal has been traveling all over the world to gain knowledge on different
aspects in order to find a way to strengthen the hearts of many Filipinos by
inspiring them to find the truth behind the faces of these spanish colonizers.
That is why to be able to uncover the mask of these colonizers , Rizal went
abroad to finish his studies in medicine. Along with that, he also met many
Filipinos such as Felix Hidalgo and Juan Luna wherein Rizal influenced them to
fight beside him in his battle to free their motherland from the spaniards.
Furthermore, One way to say that Jose Rizal is very successful in his
mission abroad is , he was able to publish novels named Noli me tangere and El
Filibusterismo. We believed that through his novels, the heart of Filipinos was
bonded together in order to stand against spanish government. Also, the birth of
La Solidaridad wherein many articles was also published in which it talks about
the oppression happening in manila.
In summary, we believe that the mission of Rizal while he is away is not
only to gain knowledge but also to gain freedom inorder to express his thoughts
about the current happenings in the Philippines. Since the motherland was
controlled by these colonizers, Indios were not allowed to express their thoughts
in such a way that it is negating the government. This is why staying abroad,
Rizal gained these sense of freedom of speech, where as in the video, Cesar
montano as Rizal, he said that why in this country people who question the
government were applauded by many and those who were silent are
disrespected. Rizal’s experience while he is traveling brought many changes that
up to this point we are applying. and that is why he is the national hero of the
country. His love for education is as equal as his love for his fellow country men.
Therefore, sacrifices are made to ensure that his beloved country and its people
will rise against odds especially from all colonizers who will attempt to get the
freedom and identity that they were all wanting for a very long time.
