Problem Definition

1
Problem statement

Mr. Thompson owns a small supermarket and operates this business manually. It has

been getting popular very quickly over the past two months. Mr. Thompson didn't think

that his business would be in demand this quickly and he is understaffed and cannot keep

track of all the stock/orders.

Problem description

Owning a business(supermarket) is a very respectable job; the people of the area in

which this supermarket is set up relies on that supermarket for their survival in terms of

food.

Some benefits of owning a supermarket are: goods are found at relatively low price in

supermarkets because they purchase larger quantities of goods, sales volume rises high

and that a supermarket becomes able to attract more customers due to its special features,

but attracting a large group of customers in this situation is not advantageous.

With technology being so dominant in today's society it should definitely be taken

advantage of. To solve this problem Mr. Thompson could go along the technological

route and start using a system to log his info. He could also create an app where

2
customers input what they take so the system takes account off that and helps make the

workload easier for himself(like customers taking stock)

The use of information technology can be used to help alleviate the workload and

should be used to do so.

3
Analysis

For this issue at Thompson’s Market to be corrected, methods of data collecting were

used on customers to further understand this problem.

4
Questionnaires

Questionnaires are a set of printed or written questions with a choice of answers, devised

for the purposes of a survey or statistical study.

This way of retrieving of information

● Makes data collection easy

● Allowing customers to state their concerns

In order to get an accurate idea of what the customers think about the situation at the

supermarket. The questionnaires were given to the customers to get a better

understanding of how the understaffing and older methods of running the supermarket

affect them. The questionnaires were handed out at the entrance of the establishment.

Interviews

Interviews are a meeting of people face to face, especially for consultation.

5
● This provides direct access to primary data.

● Allows gathering of more detailed information

By interviewing customers, most of the concerns arise from the slowness of how they are

dealt with. Some issues lie with some expired goods still shelved or certain products

being out-of-stock for an extended period. This has left Mr. Thompson with numerous

complaints.

6
Document Review

Document reviews are documents stored in an organization that are evaluated to retrieve

data.

● This shows data was collected and recorded

● Provides direct access to data

By reviewing the documents ( Mr. Thompson’s books for stock collecting and

calculating) it can be better understood how the business is run and gives ideas on how to

solve this.

7
Identification of Possible Solutions

● Seeing up a system to allow for automated stock taking and calculations. This will

also utilize sensors to update the removal of producing, thus checking it off in the

system.

Other solutions:

● Customer stock taking (customers input what and how much they take)

● Inventory spreadsheet

8
Evaluation of Possible Solution

● Automated: With the automated system, the rate at which the business is operated

will see a significant increase but this method would be costly.

● Customer : The customer stock-taking method would be great in terms of

customers being able to move quickly with their orders and would save time for

the cashiers but there would also be cases where customers would not understand

how to use the system or it could be a case where they input the wrong data

● Computerized Inventory Spreadsheet : This method would be the most cost

effective but it would be tedious and it would be the most prone to human error as

there would be a lot of data to input.

9
Selection of Possible Solution

The purpose of selecting the automated stock system would prove more efficient and

make time conservative and to limit customers from making errors, and by adding

information into the system to prevent misinterpretation. it would also be just as costly or

even cheaper than the customer stock-taking and more efficient than the inventory

spreadsheet.

10
Justification of Possible Solution

To justify this method, persons involved with the establishment were subjected to a

small-scale experiment to see how well it would affect the business and how customers

and employees would react in this environment. With the implementation of the solution

there will be no need for job recruitments to help with the operation of the business. This

will also ensure that cost is kept low.

This will help the staff to be able to operate under less stress and be able to complete their

tasks more efficiently and effectively and more comfortably.
