1 GENERAL INFORMATIONS

1.1 Operation principle

The MultiDuty is a viscous metallic air filter automatically driven with self cleaning
panels.
The dust is removed from the air passing 2 times through the panels impregnated
with a special gel : the VISCOSINE.
In the air section, the panels are overlapping one another like a tile roofing so as to
form an endless dense curtain.
The curtain rotating a few times an hour, accomplishes a complete revolution in 24
hours.
The panels are separated and hang widely spaced for ease of cleaning as they
pass through the viscosine bath at the filter bottom.
The dusts removed from panels by the viscosine are falling by gravity and the
sludge can be removed periodically from the filter bottom with the sludge scraper.

1.2 Construction
Each MultiDuty section includes a rotating curtain mounted in a steel casing of 4
different widths and in a wide range of standard heights.
The curtain consists of metallic panels suspended from attachments on the 2
endless chains mounted on 4 sprockets. The 2 upper sprockets are assembled on
the drive shaft mounted on ball bearings. The lower sprockets are loose on the
bottom shaft. The upper shaft is rotated with ratchet mechanically operated
through a worm type reducer and a V-belt.
The rotation is not continuous, every 15 minutes a timer is closing the electric
circuit during a time variable between 10 to 30 seconds in accordance with filter
height.
The mechanical drive box is located at the filter upper part and to meet
requirements, it can be installed :
• on the side :.............. right or left
• on front : ................... right or left
The bottom part of the filter casing contains the Viscosine.
The filter is delivered with a sludge receptacle and scraper to remove the sludge.

3 OPERATION

3.1 Air capacity – Pressure drop

The air handling capacity of each automatic filter should not be exceeded (by flow
measurement)
This will ensure proper air velocity and will maintain the maximum cleaning
efficiency.
• Average operating resistance at 2,5 m/s 250 Pa
at 2,0 m/s 150 Pa

3.2 Filter starting

When an automatic filter is starting for the first time or after one month stop or
more, it is necessary to :
• check that the oil tank is filled with Viscosine till the mark (4 embossments),
• operate the filter a long time enough for the curtain to make a complete
revolution and become uniformly coated with Viscosine before starting the
engine to put the system into service.
Never start the engine when the filter is not running. It is recommended to allow
the filter make a full rotation every 2 weeks when there is no air passing through
the filter.
Caution :
After complete installation and electrical connection of control box and motor, the
push button allows manual start up and mechanical checking of DD panel curtain
rotation.

3.2.1 Operation cycle

The drive motor does not run continuously. The automatic timer supplied with each
filter is adjusted to operate the drive motor 10 to 30 seconds (in accordance with
filter height) every 15 minutes to obtain a complete revolution each 24 hours.
This is for normal conditions. Contact AAF before making any changes.

3.2.2 Panel type

The DD panels are stamped from sheet metal with knurled louvres turned at an
angle to the direction of air flow. The panels so overlap one another as to compel
four distinct deflections in each curtain.
The type DD panel is recommended for heavy dust concentration and for
applications where the air contains a high percentage of lint.

4 MAINTENANCE

4.1 Generalities
4.1.1 Safety measures
• Sludge removal :
Take the necessary precautions to prevent spreading of oil over the MultiDuty
maintenance area when using the sludge scraper and sludge pan.
Before removing the sludge, if there are traces of oil in front of the MultiDuty oil
tank which would make the floor slippery, sponge and wipe them off.
Caution : the rotation cycle starts every 15 minutes.
• Drive mechanism and motor :
A team of two operators is needed to perform the maintenance on the drive
mechanism and motor.
Cut the voltage supply and isolate the machine to comply with the safety rules of
the site.
Take the necessary steps for works (maintenance) above ground level (
scaffolding, secure ladder, harness…).
NOTE 1 : the machine generating the air flow must be stopped.
NOTE 2 : make sure the maintenance area is sufficiently lighted-up.
• The replacement of the DD panels :
The DD panels are made of steel which edges are rather cutting.
Protect the hands in order to prevent cuts.
Follow the safety advices mentioned in the above note 1 & 2.

4.1.2 Operations
The MultiDuty filter maintenance is limited to the following operations :
Viscosine level control :
• the level must be maintained at the level mark (4 embossments).
FILL VISCOSINE TANK EACH TIME THE SLUDGE IS REMOVED.
Sludge removal :
• in accordance with filtered air dust concentration and real filter exploitation,
we recommend to establish a program for sludge removal : minimum once
a month.
Viscosine replacement : renew completely the Viscosine periodically, specially
when the filtered air may cause physical or chemical viscosine variation : minimum
once a year.
NOTE : When filling with new viscosine, make sure that there is no sludge
left at the bottom of the viscosine oil tank.
Timer : check the timer every 6 months.

4.1.3 Special tools required for maintenance

No special tooling required for maintenance.
Use the sludge pan and scraper for sludge removal.

4.2 Maintenance on the DD panel filtering curtain

4.2.1 Removal of DD panels
Operate from the back of the filter (air outlet).

• Remove the two lowest curtain rod supports (the bracings if any) and the curtain
rods and put them aside.

• Dismantle the removable DD panel

guidance plates [A], one on each side
of the filter (use a screwdriver or a
pincer).

Note : once sidely released, the DD

panels of the lower curtain part fall
downwards.

• Lift-up the panel [B] to be removed and

maintain it in the upwards position with
a wooden wedge [C] on each side.

• With a long-handle screwdriver (or a

pincer), open the chain link to free the
panel hook.

• Repeat the operation on the other side

of the DD panel

• Remove the DD panel and put it aside

(Pay attention to the air direction of the
slot : either right or left).

Ref. : IE-242-A-FI 1 rev J Date : July 2004

Page 11

4.2.2 Installation of the DD panel

Note : Check the air direction of the DD

panels (either right or left) and alternate
the installation of one of each : right DD
panel, left DD panel.

• Proceed as for the removal, operate

from the back of the filter : hooks
upwards, gutter downwards with curve
opposite the operator.

• Secure both panel hooks in the chain

links. Use a pincer to close the chain
links.

Note : Each DD panel should be

secured in either the upper or lower
chain link – on the same level – on
both chains.

NOTE : we strongly advise to replace the chain links that have been open
once.
To remove or replace one chain link (or a chain part) operate from the air outlet
side and block the chain with a pincer on the chain guide below three to four chain
links to the one to be replaced. Then press gently the test push button to lose the
chain above the pincer in order to make easier the replacement.
To remove one chain link, take out the chain link axis.
To close the chain, use one or two junction links.
REMARK 1 : When the clean air plenum is supplied and bolted on the
downstream face of the MultiDuty filter, to access to the guidance plates in the
lowest part of the MultiDuty and to the DD panels, it is necessary to disassemble
the clean air plenum from the MultiDuty and to lay it on the floor.
