Civil rights are the rights of individuals to be protected from unfair treatment based on certain

personal characteristics such as race, sex, age or disability. Governments enact civil rights
laws to protect people from discrimination in social roles such as education, employment,
housing, and access to public places. In other words, civil rights are a set of
rights—established by law—that protect people's freedoms from being unduly denied or
limited by governments, social organizations, or other individuals. Examples of civil rights
include people's rights to work, study, eat, and live wherever they choose. Turning away a
restaurant customer solely because of their race, for example, is a violation of civil rights
under U.S. law. Civil rights laws are often enacted to ensure fair and equal treatment for
groups of people who have historically faced discrimination. In the United States, for
example, several civil rights laws focus on " protected classes " of people who share
characteristics such as race, gender, age, disability, or sexual orientation.
The Civil Rights Act of 1987 had many important consequences for civil rights protections in
the US. The most important ones were:
Overturning of the Grove City College v. Bell decision.
Strengthening of enforcement mechanisms.
Expansion of the space occupied by past Civil Rights Acts.
