Writing a Reaction About the Story Read
Objectives: Specifically, after working on this worksheet, you should be able to do the ff
1. To write a reaction about the story read.

YOUR TEXT DISCUSSION

Reacting is one of the basic ways to think critically about a text. The following are
the things that make us react.
1. What a character says or does.
Sometimes we really like what the character has said and done and
sometimes we don’t . These can really make us react as a reader.
2. Confusing parts
We also react when we don’t understand the parts of the story.
3. Parts that make us feel intense emotions
Some emotions such as funny, scary, sad, and surprising parts and even
those that tend us to be angry can make us react.
But instead of emoticons , what we use to express our reaction is a reaction
paper.
A reaction paper is a written assignment that provides a personal opinion
regarding a piece of work. It makes you analyze a story. It makes you relate to
your own experiences. It is designed for you to consider carefully what you think
or feel about something you read , seen or watched To make it easier to visualize,
we will break down the reaction paper into two parts.
Part 1: Introduction and Summary
 What did you read ?
 Author’s name
 Title of the piece
 Publication date
 What happened in the text ?
 Character
 Setting
 Problem
 Solution
Part 2: Your Thoughts, Feelings and Opinions
A. Reaction
 How did the story make you feel ?
 Which part of the story do you like best ?

 How did the ending make you feel ?
 What have you learned from the story ?

Example of a reaction paper


The Ant and the Grasshopper by Aesop tells Part 1:
about a Grasshopper who invites an Ant to chat and A. What did you read ?

Part 2:
The purpose of the author is to educate the reader
about the importance of preparation. This made me A. Reaction
realize that when you are prepared, you can manage
problems much quicker and more efficiently. Being
prepared can reduce fear, anxiety and stress.

In conclusion, the story is an effective reminder that it B. Conclusion

1. Your reaction to a text will not always be the same with the reaction of others.
2. The point of a reaction paper is to react with your own thoughts and feelings.
3. Always remember to express your opinions clearly and in a thoughtful, well-
constructed manner.
4. Remember that there is no right nor wrong answer in giving reactions. However ,
it is important that you clearly understand the story before you give your reaction
to it.

Direction: Read the story below. Write a reaction to each story by answering the
question that follows.( 5 points each)

1. Carlo found a puppy on his way home. Thinking it had no owner, he brought
the puppy home. The puppy was playful, and it learns fast. Carlo liked the
puppy so much. One day, he passed an old tree with a poster of a puppy
missing. It was the same puppy he found. He was hesitant at first but decided
to return the puppy to its owner. The owner thanked Carlo for taking good care
of the puppy.
Do you agree with Carlo’s decision to return the puppy to it’s owner ? Explain your
answer.

2. Jose is an industrious 9-year old boy. . He sells pansit in the morning, and
banana cue in the afternoon. When asked about the threat of being infected by
COVID-19, he will only say “ I have to help my parents and I am already
wearing my face mask to protect myself against the virus.
