Quantitative Research Across
1 Fields
Quantitative research has been extensively used in different disciplines. In order to
improve or enhance ways of doing things, to disprove or provide new hypothesis, or simply to
find answers to questions or solutions to problems in daily life, people do research to find
solutions to problems in daily life.
In the natural and social sciences, quantitative research is the systematic, empirical
investigation of observable phenomena using statistical, mathematical, or computational
techniques. The goal of quantitative research is to develop and employ mathematical models,
theories and/or hypothesis pertaining to phenomena.
This module focuses on the importance of quantitative research to anthropology,
communication, sports medicine, medical education, behavioural sciences, psychology, and
social sciences.

What’s New

Research is of great value to people. Through research, the quality of man’s life
has improved from conventional to modern. It has made life richer and more meaningful.
Through research, people have found ways to augment their income and alleviate poverty.
It plays an important role in discovering new treatments, and making sure that we
use existing treatments in the best possible ways. Research can find answers to things that are
unknown, filling gaps in knowledge and changing the way that humans work.

What is it?

Quantitative Research and Communication


Researchers are often interested in how an understanding of a particular communication
phenomenon might be generalized to a larger population. For example, researchers can advance
questions like “What effect do punitive behavioural control statements have on a classroom?
What communicative behaviours are associated with different stages in a romantic relationship?
What communicative behaviours are used to respond to co-workers displaying emotional stress?
(Allen, Titsworth, Hunt, 2009).

Quantitative Research and Sports Medicine


A quantitative research done by the University of Eastern Finland investigated the
relationship between the mushrooming of fast food chains and obesity of children, as well as the
intervention needed to prevent the children’s obesity for reaching serious proportions. The
researchers focused on the children’s physical activity and physical inactivity and the
concomitant impact on the children’s amount of adipose tissue (fat mass) and endurance fitness.
The study showed that children who did strenuous exercise for 10 minutes daily had 26-30%
less adipose tissue than their peers who were physically inactive. The study concluded that
physical activity affects effectively the children’s weight control. (Prieto, Naval, Carey)
Quantitative Research and Medical Education
Experimental research designs may enhance the quality of medical education. Said
designs test interventions like curriculum, teaching – learning process, or assessment with an
experimental group. Either a comparison or controlled group of learners may allow researchers
to overcome validity concerns and infer potential cause-effect generalizations. (Prieto, Naval,

Quantitative Research and the Behavioral


Sciences
The output of this research focuses on how human behaviour relates with other people and also
the individual differences that may affect human relations. Relationship questions tend to
explore how one behaviour exhibited by people is related to other types of behaviour. Questions
of difference explore how patterns of behaviour or perceptions might differ from one group or
type of person to another. Example are verbally aggressive behaviours related to physical
aggression --- that is when a person has high level of verbally aggressive behaviour, does he or
she tend to be physically aggressive? (Prieto, Naval, Carey)

Psychology
Many educational principles in understanding human behaviour are the outcomes of this
research.

Quantitative Research and the Social Sciences


The methods employed in this type of quantitative social research are most typically the sample
survey and the experiment, a method that is particularly popular in psychological research. The
most commonly used technique for gathering information is the sample survey whether by
quantitative or qualitative means. Surveys are based on using statistical sampling methods.
Surveys enable descriptive and explanatory generalizations to be made about the population in
