Project 3
Crosstalk-induced noise
Issue: November 25, 2008 Due: December 23, 2008
The structure in FR4 material (εr=4.4) is shown below. It is a two-conductor
system. The width of traces is 3 mm, the spacing between traces is 0.5 mm, the
thickness of traces and ground is 0.035 mm, and the height of substrate is 1.6 mm.
The material of trace and ground is PEC (perfect electric conductor). At the near end,
one of the traces is connected with step pulse and the other trace is terminated. The
amplitude of step pulse is 1 V and its rising time is 50 psec. At the far-end, all the
traces are terminated by 50 ohm.

1. Use coupled-line formula mentioned at class to extract the inductance and

capacitance at each conductor and establish the equivalent L/C circuit model in
ADS simulator.

2. (a) Connect the trace with 50 ohm termination at the near end A and simulate it
using ADS simulator. Moreover, observe the near- and far- end crosstalk pulse in
time domain.
(b) The termination A is still 50 ohm and termination B becomes open-circuited.
Observe the near- and far-end crosstalk pulse in time domain by ADS simulator.

3. Use full-wave simulator, like HFSS and CST, to simulate the structure for achieving
S-parameters. Load the S-parameter file to ADS and repeat the problem 2.
Validate the two simulation results. [Be careful! The equivalent L/C circuit model
is replaced with S-parameter file.]
