INTRODUCTION

This module also will allow the students to realize the importance of engaging in
recreational activities and utilize their time productively. It was also designed to fulfill the
blended learning, outputs or performances will be sent through online classroom or any
platform of virtual communication or computer-generated technology. It will allow you to
discover your interests from the information, awareness and trivia provided in this module
while making your family stay connected in your home.

OBJECTIVES

1. Determine and choose an aquatics recreation activity.


2. Develop interest of physical activities through aquatics activities.
3. Choose equipment and places for the activity.
4. Recognize the responsibilities in helping and maintaining the environment.

Lesson 1: Introduction to Swimming

Swimming

Swimming, in recreation and sports, the propulsion of the body through water by


combined arm and leg motions and the natural flotation of the body. Swimming as
an exercise is popular as an all-around body developer and is particularly useful in
therapy and as exercise for physically handicapped persons. It is also taught for lifesaving
purposes. For activities that involves swimming, diving, lifesaving, surfing, synchronized
swimming, underwater diving, and water polo.
Must bring the following: swim wear, towels, robes, goggles, flip flops, toiletries, swimming
cap, water bottles and foods.
Safety precautions
o Always swim with a buddy.
o Swim only in areas that have a lifeguard.
o Stay out of the water when you are very tired, very cold, or overheated.
o Follow all swimming rules posted at the swimming area.
o Obey the lifeguard’s instruction.
o If you cannot see the bottom of the pool in the deep end or the water is cloudy,
don’t swim there.
o Avoid swimming at night in unlighted areas.
o Do not chew gum or eat while swimming, you could choke.
o Swim a safe distance away from diving boards and slides. Never swim under them.
o Avoid swimming in river currents.

Rules for Pools Slides


o Slides should be at the deep end of the pools so that the entry is into water least
eight feet and away from diving areas.
o Go down feet first in a sitting position. (Going down headfirst is dangerous-you
could injure your head, neck, or back.)
Rules for Water Park Slides, Flumes and Wave Pools
o Be sure all areas have a lifeguard.
o Position yourself carefully before you start down.
o Don’t get pressured into a stunt.
o In a wave pool be sure you know how deep the water will be when the wave pool is
turned on.
Rules for the Beach
o Know where the nearest lifeguard stand is.
o Be sure you know the surf conditions before you enter the water.
o Check for warning flags.
o Observe danger signs.
o Swim well away from piers, pilings, and diving platforms.
o Be on the lookout for dangerous marine life.
o If you swim out from shore, remember you must swim back.
o If you are caught in a current, do not try to fight it or swim against it. You can
make it back to shore by swimming gradually away from it.
o Don’t let anyone pressure you into a dangerous stunt.
Basic Skills in Swimming
o Breath Control
o Kicking
o Strokes
o And make sure you are relaxed!
The Basic Strokes
o Butterfly – The swimmer must remain on the breast at all times with synchronized
arm and leg movements.
o Breaststroke – here arms and legs follow a circular motion and must remain
synchronous at all times
o Backstroke – swimmers must remain on their back at all times, except for when
performing a turn.
Swimming is a good all-round activity because it:

o Keeps your heart rate up but takes some of the impact stress off your body.
o Builds endurance, muscle strength and cardiovascular fitness.
o Helps maintain a healthy weight, healthy heart and lungs.
o Tones muscles and builds strength.
