A LETTER FROM MAESTRO DANIEL W. BOOTHE

Dear Symphonicity Patrons,

“Love was changing the mind of pretenders while chasing the clouds
away. Our hearts were ringing in the key that our souls were singing.”
Those are lyrics penned by American singer, musician, songwriter and
record producer, Maurice White, best known for his work with the band
Earth, Wind & Fire.

Those words also describe our intentions as we present a journey through

spectacular symphonic sounds, both new and warmly familiar. Each
concert will connect to the very elements of the natural world and our
humanity.

There seems to be a need for healing both of our planet and of our spirits.
“I see our music as medicine,” said Maurice White. In a similar way, it is our
hope that our generously volunteered talents combined with your vital
support will fulfill a deep community need from the inside out.

Something for everyone can be found in our lineup to include an electric

guitar concerto with a GRAMMY-winning artist, to the timeless truths
found in Tchaikovsky and Haydn. Diversity will shine through wonderfully
varied backgrounds of our soloists, composers and musical styles.
Uplifting messages will be heard as in Earthrise by Adolphus Hailstork or
by the nightingale in Respighi’s Pines of Rome. The season pops finale will
sparkle to the words: “As we danced in the night, remember how the stars
stole the night away.”

The stars are on stage…in front of you, beside you and behind you.
Together we make, share and support this powerful performance art
because of what we love. And as Stravinsky said, “What force is more
potent than love?”

We love that you are here and hope that you will come back with your
friends! Thank you for your support in this special Earth, Wind & Fire
season.

Earth, Wind & Fire
Earth, Wind & Fire was the brainchild of Maurice White, a drummer
raised in Memphis, Tennessee, who moved to Chicago and became a
veteran session player at Chess Records and a member of the Ramsey
Lewis Trio. He drew upon a wide variety of influences, including his
Memphis church-singing roots, his broad recording duties at Chess, and
his stint at the Chicago Conservatory of Music, to create a truly original
fusion of styles with his innovative group. Capitalizing on his reputation
as a session player, White was able to establish the group in Los Angeles
as a jazz-fusion act in 1970, recording two albums for Warner Brothers.
While on tour in Denver in 1971, the group shared a bill with a local
act that featured vocalist Bailey, keyboardist Dunn, and saxophonist
Woolfolk, all of whom soon after joined a reconstituted Earth, Wind
& Fire that developed a broader musical range encompassing funk,
soul, and pop. The group switched labels, and their second album for
Columbia, Head to the Sky (1973), sold a half-million copies, setting
the stage for the huge success that followed. That’s the Way of the
World (1975) lifted Earth, Wind & Fire to superstardom, yielding the
hit singles “Shining Star” and “Reasons.” Their phenomenal string of
11 consecutive gold albums (sales of 500,000 copies), 8 of which also
attained platinum status (sales of 1,000,000 copies), included Gratitude
(1975), Spirit (1976), All ’n’ All (1977), The Best of Earth, Wind & Fire, Vol.
1 (1978), and Raise! (1981).

The band went on hiatus in 1984 but returned with the successful Touch
the World in 1987. Later albums included In the Name of Love (1997),
The Promise (2003), Illumination (2005), and Now, Then & Forever
(2013).

Part of the band’s appeal was its remarkable versatility, as it delivered

soulful ballads, spiritual anthems, Afro-Caribbean jazz, driving funk and
rock, and upbeat disco dance hits. Earth, Wind & Fire’s songs offered
uplifting poetic lyrics with romantic and playful themes of universal
brotherhood, spiritual enlightenment, and sentimental romance. The
group was known for spectacular concerts that featured gigantic stage
props, elaborate costumes, grand illusions, and frenetic musical energy.
The multitalented White and falsetto vocalist Bailey led an ensemble
that often reached 15 players onstage. White’s affection for Egyptology
and use of African instruments such as the kalimba (thumb piano)
further embellished the group’s unique image.

8 Earth, Wind & Fire

Earth, Wind & Fire spawned a number of imitations during the 1970s,
as groups adopted mystical three-part names, imitated their elaborate
dress and choreography, or attempted to reproduce the poetry, lush
orchestration, and mysticism of Earth, Wind & Fire’s albums and
concerts. Despite the brief hiatus during the 1980s, White’s group
remained an international stage attraction well into the 21st century. In
2000 Earth, Wind & Fire was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of
Fame, and the band received a Grammy Award for lifetime achievement
in 2016.

Chicago
Chicago, rock band, among the most popular American recording artists
of all time, with sales of more than 100 million records. Initially a jazz-
rock unit, Chicago thrived as it moved toward a lighter, ballad-oriented
rock style. Called the Chicago Transit Authority before shortening its
name to that of the city in which it was founded in 1967, Chicago distin-
guished itself from other rock bands of the late 1960s by the inclusion of
horns in its lineup. The band’s early albums, including its debut, Chicago
Transit Authority (1969)—made after the group relocated to Los Ange-
les—were resonant with soul-inflected jazz influences. By the early 1970s
principal songwriters Cetera, Lamm, and Pankow and producer-manager
James Guercio began to steer Chicago in a more pop-oriented direction.
A series of hit albums over the next decade featured Top Ten songs such
as “Does Anybody Really Know What Time It Is?” and “Saturday in the
Park.” In the late 1970s, following the death of guitarist Kath, Chicago
slumped; the band topped the charts again in the ’80s with hits such as
“Hard to Say I’m Sorry,” though it failed to maintain that momentum in
the ’90s. Vocalist Cetera also experienced some success as a soloist.

POPS! - Brasswind 9
BRASSWIND

Conceptualized by a group of mostly local band directors in February

of 2017, it was brought to life nearly one year later in January of 2018 in

Williamsburg, Virginia.

A band the likes which Hampton Roads hadn’t seen in a very long time...a

band revolving around horns and horn band music. The Tower of Power,

Blood, Sweat, & Tears, Chicago, Earth, Wind, & Fire...the list is extensive

and too numerous to count. Since 2018, the roster has evolved and the

scope of genres & styles has grown making them the most eclectic party

band around.

10 Earth, Wind & Fire

Now BrassWind is composed completely of retired & active-duty military
in addition to some of the original charter-member teachers that have

remained.

Though the roster and genres/styles have changed, the mission has

always been the same. To bring back good quality music to Hampton

Roads and beyond...and to do it the right way. The way it was meant to

be done...an incredibly gifted rhythm section paired with real horns and

exceptional vocals! We like to call it...“Grown Folks Music”
