Working With a Colleague Who Feels That the World is Against

Them
Some people love to play the victim. Nothing is ever their fault and
everyone around them is out to get them. Having a coworker like
this can take a toll on you. So what’s the best way to protect
yourself? How can you help your colleague change their mindset?
And how do you handle the emotional toll of working with this
person?
What the Experts Say
Working alongside someone who always feels like a victim “is an
Blog inherent downer,” says Holly Weeks, a lecturer at the Harvard
Kennedy School and author of Failure to Communicate. “You feel
stuck,” she says. “You see this person walking towards you and
your heart sinks.” Perhaps the biggest challenge in dealing with a
colleague who has this mentality is “the negativity” that this
person exudes, says Amy Jen Su, managing partner of Paravis
Partners and coauthor of Own the Room. “When you are busy, the
last thing you need is to be around someone who views the world
as glass half empty,” she says. Still, you’re not helpless. “The one
thing you can control is your response,” Su says. Here’s some
advice on how to deal with this decidedly difficult colleague.

Medical BLOOD TEST CAN SPOT DNA

FROM EIGHT DIFFERENT TYPES
OF CANCER
A simple blood test can detect eight different types of cancer. It
does this by detecting the various sizes of tumour DNA fragments
that flow through the body.
At the moment, most cancer screening tools are limited to specific
areas of the body – for example, mammograms for spotting breast
cancer and faecal tests for detecting bowel cancer. Whole-body
MRI and CT scans can identify tumours throughout the body, but
only once they have grown large enough to see.
As a result, many research groups are working on developing blood
tests that can detect multiple different cancer types while they are
still in early, treatable stages.
A popular approach is to genetically sequence blood to see if it
contains any tell-tale tumour DNA markers. But this is like looking
for needles in a haystack because of the large volume of non-
cancerous DNA that also circulates in the blood.
Now, Florent Mouliere at Cambridge University and his colleagues
have devised a different approach that doesn’t require time-
consuming genetic sequencing and is potentially more accurate.

Technical 1.2.1 Targeting the locking hole

With the appropriate length BRAND NAME™ PRODUCT NAME™ 4.0
mm Drill Bit (7169-2810 or 7169-2811) or the PRODCUT NAME
Humeral AO
Drill Bit (7169-1155) inserted into the Targeter, insert the tip of the
drill sleeve (represented by the green circle) through the incision
and down to bone.

Adjust the trajectory of the Targeter (represented by the red circle)

until both the green and red circles are concentric and drill through
to the far cortex.
The accuracy may be verified using the C-arm.
WARNING: The standard BRAND NAME™ Drill Bits are made from
magnetic stainless steel that will cause interference with the
system and cannot be used . Be sure to use the gold non-magnetic
BRAND NAME™ PRODUCT NAME™ Drill Bit or long gold non-
magnetic drill bit .
Note: The green ring must be fully within the hole of the IM nail
displayed on the navigation screen to ensure accurate drilling.

EDITING NATURE: LOCAL ROOTS

OF GLOBAL GOVERNANCE

INTEGRATED DELIBERATION
We propose a coordinating body that can convene communities,
technology developers, and governmental and nongovernmental
organizations in ways that ensure inclusive deliberations. Such a
body would serve as a neutral third party to help inform
decisionmaking that is free from conflicts of interest and locally
based. This organization would (i) establish a deliberation
framework that integrates diverse expertise and worldviews,
including participants that represent impacted communities; (ii)
facilitate deliberation to produce standardized reports and deliver
recommendations; (iii) establish information-sharing protocols to
connect deliberations around the world; and (iv) report on the
Science
outcomes of deliberation to inform global governance of gene
editing.
Characterizing what defines an affected “local” community will be
an important part of this process and will depend on the nature of
the technology and how it is predicted to interact with the
environment. For example, if a self-propagating gene drive is under
deliberation to counter malaria transmission, then representatives
from much of sub-Saharan Africa would deserve a voice. For cases
where a technology is more limited in scope or designed to have
more limited spread, predictive models could be used to define the
communities most likely to be affected and relative riskiness of the
alteration. In line with frameworks for responsible innovation,
evaluation would ideally begin as early as possible, so that
deliberation shapes the development of the application in question
(13).

Business Burnishing The Brand

These various activities also have significant reputational value. A
report by McKinsey & Company notes that environmental
sustainability is now a strategic and integral part of many
businesses, given its positive effect on corporate reputation. A
Nielsen study of 30,000 consumers across the world indicates that
73 percent of Millennials are willing to pay extra for sustainable
goods.
“Consumer brands that haven’t embraced sustainability are at risk
on many fronts,” warned Carol Gstalder, Nielsen’s senior vice
president of reputation and public relations solutions. “Social
responsibility is a critical part of proactive reputation management.
And companies with strong reputations outperform others when it
comes to attracting top talent, investors, community partners and,
importantly, consumers.”
Added up, the economic and eco-friendly benefits of sustainable
manufacturing are compelling. By engaging in sustainable
manufacturing, companies may also be eligible to receive
government tax credits, grants and other incentives at the federal
and state level. The reason for this largesse is the economic
payback: The National Association of Manufacturers found that for
every dollar spent in manufacturing, another $1.89 accrues to U.S.
gross domestic product (GDP).

Academic Effects of germination and defatting of the soybean and sesame on

the mineral bioavailability and absorption of sweet potato based
complementary diets
Abstract
The effect of germination of soybean and sesame seeds on the
bioavailability of minerals of complementary foods was
investigated using rats. Formulations of complementary diets 1 to
4 were produced from sweet potato, soybean and sesame flours at
a ratio of 60:30:10, respectively. Formulated diets were
significantly higher (p<0.05) in protein, fat and moisture content
and lower in carbohydrate and crude fibre than in control. Diet 4
was significantly higher (p<0.05) in minerals (Ca, Zn and Fe)
content than in control. The formulated diets were generally low in
phytate and oxalate contents, while phytate content was much
lower in the diets from germinated flour blends. Anti-nutritional
factor (ANF): mineral molar ratio suggested good mineral
absorption from the formulated diets. Mineral content of the
tissues of rats fed with the formulated diets indicated good
absorption within the rats; rats fed with the germinated flour
blends had significantly higher (p<0.05) zinc, iron and calcium
contents of tissues when compared. Diet 4 consistently received
better rating among the samples.
