Guided Questions:
1. How would you describe the graph?

2. Give the vertex of the parabola and its axis of symmetry.

3. At what values of x does the graph intersect the x – axis?

4. What do you call these x – coordinates where the curve crosses the x – axis?

5. What is the value of y at these values of x?

Let’s Elaborate

Zeros of Quadratic Functions

The graph of a quadratic function is a parabola. A parabola can cross the x−axis once,
twice, or never. The x−coordinates of these points of intersection are called x -intercepts. Let
us consider the graph of the quadratic function y=2 x 2 – 8 x−42=0. It shows that the curve
crosses the x−axis at −3∧7. These are the x−intercepts of the graph of the function.
Similarly, −3∧7 are the zeros of the function since these are the values of x when y equals 0.
These zeros of the function can be determined by setting y to 0 and solving the resulting
equation through different algebraic methods.

Example 1.
Find the zeros of the quadratic function Since the equation is

Determining the equation of quadratic function given the roots/zeros, table of values and
graph.

Example 1
Find an equation of a quadratic function whose zeros are −3∧7.

If r 1 and r 2 are the zeros of a quadratic function, then f ( x)=a(x−r 1)( x – r 2 ) where a is a
nonzero constant that can be determined from other point on the graph.

Solution
Since the zeros are r 1=−3 and r 2=7 , then
y=a( x−r 1 )(x – r 2)
y=a[ x – (−3)](x – 7)
y=a( x +3)(x – 7)
y=a(x 2−4 x – 21) where a is any nonzero constant.

Also, you can use the sum and product of the zeros to find the equation of the quadratic function.
∑ ¿r 1+r 2=−3+7=4 product=r 1∗r 2=−3∗7=−21

Substitute the sum and the product of roots in the equation y=a x − ( 2 −b

Example 2.
Determine the equation of the quadratic function represented by the table of values
below.
x 0 1 2 3 4
y −10 −14 −14 −10 −2

Solution: To determine the quadratic function y=a x2 +bx +c , we need to find the values
a , b ,∧c using the given table.

y −10 −14 −14 −10 −2 a=
2
a=2
4 0 -4 -8
4 4 4

b. Find the value of c.

Take note that c is equal to the value of y-intercept.

To find the y-intercept, set x=0

y=a x2 +bx +c
y=a(0)2 + ( 0 ) x+ c
y=0 a+0 x+ c
y=c
In the table above, when x=0 then y=−10 . Thus, y=c , hence, c=−10

c. To find the value of b use the general form y=a x2 +bx +c .

Substitute the value of a and c in the equation. For the value of x∧ y , pick any point
on the given table. Let’s choose (2 ,−14 ).

2
y=a x +bx +c
a=2 , c=−10 , x=2 , y =−14

−14=( 2) ( 2 )2+ b(2)−10

−14=8+2 b−10
−14−8+10=2 b
−12=2 b
−6=b

Thus, a=2 ,b=−6 andc=−10. Substitute these in y=a x2 +bx +c ; the quadratic function is
2
f ( x )=2 x −6 x – 10

Another x 0 1 2 3 4
solution: y −10 −14 −14 −10 −2

y=ax 2+ bx+ c

using point (1 ,−14)

using point (3 ,−10)
−10=a(3)2 +b(3)+ c --------- -------- -10 = 9a + 3b + c equation 3

Multiply the terms in eq 2 by -2 and add the terms in eq. 2 to eliminate b

-2(eq 1) +eq 2 28=−2 a−2 b−2 c
−14=4 a+2 b+ c
14=2 a−c ------------- equation 4

Multiply the terms in eq 2 by -3 and eq 3 by 2 then add the equations to eliminate b

-3(eq 2) + 2(eq 3) 42=−12 a−6 b−3 c
−20=18 a+6 b+ 2c
22=6 a−c ------------- equation 5

Multiply the terms in eq 4 by -3 and add terms in eq 5 to solve for c

-3(eq 4) - eq 5 −42=−6 a+ 3 c
22=6 a−c
−20=2 c
−10=c

Substitute the value of c in equation 4 and solve for a

14=2 a−c
14=2 a – (−10)
14=2 a+10
4=2a
2=a
Substitute the value of a and c in equation 1 and solve for b
−14=a+ b+c
−14=2+b+(−10)
−14=−8+ b
−6=b

Thus, a=2 , b=−6∧c=−10. Substitute these in f (x)=ax 2+ bx+ c, the quadratic function is
2 2
f (x)=2 x – 6 x−10∨ y=2 x – 6 x−10 .

Example 3. Find the equation of the quadratic function determined from the graph below.
Figure 1 image from Kuta Software

When the vertex and any point on the parabola are clearly seen, the equation
of the quadratic function can easily be determined by using the form of a quadratic function
y=a( x – h)2+ k .

Solution:
The vertex of the graph of the quadratic function is(−4,3) . The graph passes through the
point (−3,2). By replacing x and y with−3∧2, respectively, and h and k with−4∧3 , respectively,
we have
2
y=a ( x−h ) +k
2
2=a (−3+4 ) +3
2=a ( 1 )+3
2=a+3
−1=a

Thus, the quadratic equation is y=−1 ( x +4 )2+ 3 or y=−x2 −8 x−13

Expand:
2
y=−1 ( x +4 ) + 3
y=−1 ( x +8 x+ 16 ) +3
2

2
y=−x −8 x−16+3
y=−x2 −8 x – 13

We can also find the vertex of the graph given the quadratic function using the formula:
2
−b 4 ac−b
h= and k =
2a 4a
2
f (x)=−x −8 x−13
2
y=−x −8 x−13
y=a ( x−h )2 +k
a = -1 b = -8 c = -13
2
−(−8) 4 (−1)(−13)−(−8)
h= k=
2a 4 (−1)
8 52−64
h= k=
2(−1) −4
8 −12
h= k=
−2 −4
h=−4 k =3

To check for the equation, substitute the value of h and k in the standard form y=a ( x−h )2 +k of
a quadratic function, we have;

y=a ( x−h )2 +k
2
y=a ( x+ 4 ) +3
y=−1 ( x +4 )2+ 3
y=−1(x¿¿ 2+8 x +16)+3 ¿
2
y=−x −8 x−16+3
2
y=−x −8 x – 13

Solving Problems involving Quadratic Functions In

Free falling objects can be modeled by a quadratic function

h(t)=−4.9 t 2 +V 0 t+ h0, where h( t) is the height (in meters) of an
object at t seconds, when it is thrown with an initial velocity of V 0
m/s and an initial height of h 0 meters. If units are feet, then the
2
function is h( t)=−16 t + V 0 t +h0 .
Example 1: From a 128 meters city tower, an object is thrown straight up into the air then
follows a trajectory. The height S(t) of the ball above the building after t seconds is given by the
function S(t )=−16 t 2+112

a. What maximum height will the object reach?

The maximum height reached by the object is the ordinate of vertex of the parabola of
function S(t )=−16 t 2+112 t . By transforming this equation in completed square form we have,

S(t )=−16 t 2+112 t Using Vertex

2
S(t )=−16(t – 7 t )

7 2
S(t )=−16(t− ) +196
2
f ( 72 ) = 16( 72 ) + 112( 72 ) = 196
2

The vertex is ( 72 ,196 ). Thus, the maximum height reached by the object is 196 ft from the top of
the building. This is 308 ft from the ground.

b. How long will it take the object to reach the maximum height?

The time for an object to reach the maximum height is the abscissa of the vertex of the
parabola or the value of h.
S(t )=−16 t 2+112

( )
2
7
S(t )=−16 t − + 196
2
Since the value of h is 7 /2∨3.5, then the object is at its maximum height after 3.5 seconds

c. Find the time at which the object is on the ground?

To find the time it will take the object to hit the ground, Let S(t )=−128 since the height
of the building is 128 ft . The problem requires us to solve for t.
S(t )=−16 t 2+112 t
2
−128=−16 t +112 t
1 16 t 2 – 112 t – 128=0
2
t −7 t – 4=0
(t – 8)(t+1)=0
t=8∨t=−1

Thus, it will take 8 seconds before the object hits the ground.

A quadratic function can be applied in

business/industry to determine the maximum profit, the break
– even situation and the like. Suppose x denotes the number
of units a company plans to produce or sell. The revenue
function R(x) is defined as R(x) = (price per unit) x (number of
units produced or sold
Example 2: A flower farm sells about 80 roses per week costing ₱ 160 each. For each ₱ 25
decrease in price, the gardener found out that more than 11 roses were sold per week.
1. Write a quadratic function in standard form that models the revenue from roses sales.
Revenue R(x) = (price per unit) x (number of units produced or sold)
Revenue R(x) = (number of roses) (price per rose)
R ( x )=( 80+11 x )( 160−25 x )
R( x )=−275 x 2+ 240 x +12800
2. What price produce the maximum revenue

R( x )=−275 x 2+ 240 x +12800

−b −240 −240
h= -0.44
2a 2(−275) −550
The price of roses produce maximum revenue can be determined by

P( x )=160−25 x
P(−0.44 )=160 – 25(−0.44)=171
Thus, Php171 is the price of roses that produces maximum revenue
