Title The Socio-Economic Impact of Municipal Solid Waste Management:
Case Study at PT. Xaviera Global Synergy (The Best Waste Bank 2021)
Abstract This paper examines the impact of municipal solid waste
management on socio-economics. The growing population and
urbanization have increased the amount of waste generated, leading to
environmental pollution and adverse health effects. The economic losses
associated with poor waste management practices, such as clean-up costs,
health care expenses, and environmental remediation, have significant
socio-economic consequences. Moreover, limited access to adequate
waste management services exacerbates the socio-economic conditions of
low-income communities and informal waste collectors. The paper
highlights the need for an effective and sustainable waste management
system to address the socio-economic impacts of municipal solid waste
management. This research uses case study as methodology presenting a
mixed-methods approach. The paper provides insights into the socio-
economic impact of waste management and proposes practical solutions
for policymakers, waste management practitioners, and other
stakeholders.
Introduction Currently, countries worldwide particularly developing countries
are encountering comparable issues, specifically those related to the
environment and public health. As a result, various entities, including
governments and private organizations, have conducted extensive
activities in recent years to regulate and overcome the challenge of
municipal waste. Indonesia has witnessed a similar trend, with a relatively
high rate of urbanization, growth in big industry and home industry
sectors, and changes in consumption patterns and lifestyles leading to a
significant surge in both the quantity and diversity of waste over the past
few decades (Premakumara, 2014).
Inadequate waste management practices can lead to air and water
pollution, which can negatively affect public health and cause
environmental degradation, soil contamination, and greenhouse gas
emissions (UNEP, 2020). Moreover, poor solid waste management can
impact the socio-economic conditions of communities.
PT. Xaviera Global Synergy located in Sentul Bogor is a notable
stakeholder in municipal solid waste management. It’s an enterprise that
provides environmental care services with a focus on managing urban,
industrial, agricultural, and household waste. Its primary function is to
manage waste, which is generally discarded and can cause pollution, by
converting it into compost and energy. The company is committed to
supporting food security, renewable energy, and employment
opportunities, with an emphasis on waste management. Its objective is to
 promote a Green Economy that leads to a healthy, environmentally
sustainable, and self-sufficient Indonesia (usahasosial.com).
The focal point of this study is PT. Xaviera Global Synergy will
be examined in detail to understand the entire process of municipal waste
management from upstream to downstream and its economic implications
on society. This research will describe municipal solid waste management
by PT. Xaviera Global Energy, and give recommendations for further
development on the economic impact of society through the waste bank.
Problem Statement Municipal solid waste management is a critical issue affecting
communities around the world. Improper disposal of solid waste has
significant environmental and socio-economic impacts. According to the
World Bank, global municipal solid waste generation is expected to reach
2.2 billion tonnes per year by 2025, up from 1.3 billion tonnes per year in
2012 (World Bank, 2018).
The impact of municipal solid waste management on socio-
economics has become a significant concern worldwide. The increase in
population and urbanization has led to a rise in the amount of waste
generated, which has resulted in adverse effects on the environment and
public health. Poor waste management practices have also led to
economic losses due to the costs of clean-up, health care, and
environmental remediation.
Additionally, limited access to adequate waste management
services affects the socio-economic conditions of vulnerable populations,
such as low-income communities and informal waste collectors.
Therefore, there is a need for an effective and sustainable waste
management system that can address the socioeconomic impacts of
municipal solid waste management.
In summary, there is a need for a better understanding of
municipal waste management conducted by PT. Xaviera Global Synergy
and socio-economic impact on society. More specifically, the following
research questions need to be addressed:
1. How is the municipal solid waste management system implemented
by PT. Xaviera Global Synergy in reducing the environmental
pollution?
2. What is the socio-economic impact of Implementing Municipal Solid
Waste Management on local societies, regional, and national
economics in Indonesia: in the case study of PT
Xaviera Global Synergy?
Objectives The management of municipal solid waste is a pressing issue,
particularly in urban areas. Poor waste management can have significant
socio-economic consequences, including impacts on public health,
employment, and local economies. This paper examines the case of PT.
Xaviera Global Synergy, a waste management company recognized as the
 "Best Waste Bank 2021", evaluates its socio-economic impact in the
context of municipal solid waste management. The paper aims to achieve
the following objectives:
1. To analyze the socio-economic impact of the waste management
practices implemented by PT. Xaviera Global Synergy, specifically
in terms of job creation, income generation, and community
development.
2. To evaluate the effectiveness of PT. Xaviera Global Synergy's waste
management strategies, including waste reduction, recycling, and
disposal methods, in terms of their impact on the environment, and
the economy.
The research findings can benefit waste management companies,
policymakers, government bodies, and local communities by providing
insights into effective waste management strategies that prioritize
sustainability and social responsibility, potentially improving public
health, increasing job opportunities, and promoting a cleaner
environment.
Literature Review Jusman, Muhammad. et al. (2021) examined the socio-economic
impact of the Waste Bank Policy in Makassar City using descriptive
qualitative research. Data collection methods include interviews,
observations, and documentation. Results show that a central waste bank
is necessary to avoid conflict among other waste banks and to address the
problem of landfill capacity. The waste bank policy also provides
economic benefits by giving value to previously low-value waste.
Masuroh. et al. (2022) The study found that the Waste Bank
program has positively impacted the socio-economic community in
Banten province, with a contribution of 41.5%. The Waste Bank program
provides funds for daily necessities, promotes recycling and reusing
items, and encourages creativity by utilizing unused items. Additionally,
the Waste Bank program has economic, environmental, social, and
educational impacts. It functions like a bank, reducing waste in the
community and promoting recycling, while educating customers on the
value of waste and how to create crafts from unused materials.
Nguyen, P. L. K. et al. (2020) analyzed 12 years of data on
municipal solid waste (MSW) in Taiwan and found that safety concerns,
economic activities, and lifestyle were the main factors affecting MSW
composition. MSW became more complex with economic growth, with
an increase in recyclable waste, and a decline in plastic and glass waste
due to recycling policies and green awareness campaigns. Modifying
consumers' socioeconomic factors and behaviors can be important for
effective MSW management in developing countries.
Methodology The primary research method used is case study with qualitative and
quantitative approach. The following steps will be conducted on this
research:
1. Formulate the research problem based on existing reality or a real-
world issue that requires further investigation.
2. Conduct a thorough literature search and study on relevant topics to
gain a comprehensive understanding of the subject matter.
3. Carry out study visits and interviews with relevant stakeholders to
gather first-hand information and insights.
4. Collect data in the field using various research methods, such as
surveys, observations, and measurements.
5. Analyze the collected data using appropriate statistical and analytical
tools.
6. Formulate research results based on the analyzed data and draw
conclusions.
7. Develop recommendations based on the research findings to address
the identified problem or improve the situation.
By following these steps, a research study can provide valuable insights
and recommendations to address real-case issues and contribute to the
advancement of knowledge in the field.
