Introduction

A rising quality of life, and high rates of resource consumption patterns have had a

unintended and negative impact on the urban environment - generation of wastes far

beyond the handling capacities of urban governments and agencies. Cities are now

grappling with the problems of high volumes of waste, the costs involved, the

disposal technologies and methodologies, and the impact of wastes on the local and

global environment.

But these problems have also provided a window of opportunity for cities to find

solutions-involving the community and the private sector, involving innovative

technologies and disposal methods, and involving behaviour changes and

awareness raising These issues have been amply demonstrated by good practices

from many cities around the world.

There is a clear need for the current approach of waste disposal that is focussed on

municipalities and uses high energy/technology, to move more towards waste

processing and waste recycling (that involves low energy/technology resources.

Some of the defining criteria for future waste minimization programmers will include

deeper community participation, understanding economic benefits of waste, focusing

on life cycles (rather than end-of-pipe solutions) decentralized administration of

waste, and minimizing environmental impacts.

The world generates 2.01 billion tons of municipal solid waste annually, with at least

33 percent of that extremely conservatively not managed in an environmentally safe

manner. Worldwide, waste generated per person per day averages 0.74 kilogram but
ranges widely, from 0.11 to 4.54 kilograms. Though they only account for 16 percent

of the world’s population, high-income countries generate about 34 percent, or 683

million tons, of the world’s waste.

Philippines has endeavored to improve its management of solid waste through `the

passage of RA 9003 (Ecological Solid Waste Management Act) that provides for a

systematic, comprehensive and ecological waste management program to ensure

the protection of public health, and the environment. Philippines is now facing an

increasingly severe situation of municipal solid waste processing and management.

According to the statement of the World Bank, 25% of the solid waste in the country

is generated in Manila major metropolitan area.

Problem Statement

1. In what ways does proper waste management reduce health risks and improve

overall community?

2. What are the positive impact of proper waste management in terms of:

a.) Health of people

b.) Environment

3. What are the factors that need to consider in implementing proper waste

management?

4. What are the recommendations that can be suggested to improve the proper

waste management in Barangay Tayhi Tabaco city?

Scope and Delimitation

This research focused in investigating the impact of proper waste management in

Tayhi, Tabaco City. A total of 20 residents in tayhi will be selected as respondents of
this study and will be chosen randomly. The primary subject of this research study is
the impact of proper waste management in Tayhi Tabaco City.

SETTING OF THE STUDY

This research study had its setting in Tayhi Tabaco City. Tayhi, formerly Poblacion, is

a barangay in the city of Tabaco, in the province of Albay. Its population as

determined by the 2020 Census was 3,482. This represented 2.47% of the total

population of Tabaco.

SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

The significance of studying the impact of proper waste management in Tayhi

Tabaco City lies in its potential to address critical environmental, social, and

economic issues affecting the community.

This results of the study were expected to primarily beneficial to:

Environment. can mitigate environmental degradation by reducing pollution of air,

soil, and water bodies. And also to reduce the waste in Tayhi Tabaco City.

Public Health. Effective waste management helps minimize health hazards

associated with improper disposal of waste, such as the spread of diseases and

contamination of food and water sources. By studying the impact of waste

management practices, the study can inform measures to safeguard public health in

Tayhi Tabaco City.

Future Researchers. They will be benefited in a way that this study will serve as the

basis or guide for them to improve their future studies concerning environmental

studies.

Community Well-being. Addressing waste management issues positively impacts the

quality of life and well-being of residents in Tayhi Tabaco City. This study can

highlight the importance of community involvement and raise awareness about the

significance of responsible waste management practices for overall community

welfare.

Economic Benefits. Efficient waste management systems generate economic benefits

through job creation, resource recovery, and cost savings associated with waste

treatment and disposal. Investigating the impact of proper waste management on the

local economy can support economic development efforts in Tayhi Tabaco City.
