Micro Project Report

A Micro Project Report on “SUBSTATION

SAFETY PRACTICES”

1.0 Rational: -

The safety practices at the substation were rational given the risk of high-voltage
electrical equipment and the conductive environment of the substation. The utility's
substation policy included activities to promote employee safety and reduce the risk of
injury from electrical hazards. These activities included: ensuring that employees
working on energized equipment were qualified to do so ensuring that employees wore
appropriate safety equipment, such as hard hats, high-visibility vests, rubber boots, and
gloves providing education and training for employees on safety practices and electrical
hazards ensuring that employees followed standard operating procedures ensuring that
employees worked from a safe location ensuring that employees used appropriate PPE,
such as hard hats, high-visibility vests, rubber boots, and gloves ensuring that
employees used appropriate tools and equipment, such as hand tools that had insulated
handles ensuring that employees used appropriate protection, such as guarding and
tagging, to prevent inadvertent contact with energized parts ensuring that employees
tested and documented the equipment before working on it requiring workers to use
lockout/tagout procedures to protect employees from inadvertent start-up of energized
equipment.

2.0 Aim of the Micro project: -

The electrical power for many industries is made available through their own
substations. This course will empower the students with the necessary knowledge of
operations and maintenance of substation equipment. This course will also be useful for
students to observe the safety while working in substations as well as to improve the
quality of power system. In this course new type of substation like Gas Insulated
substation is also included.

3.0 Course Outcome Integrated: -

a. Follow safety rules for Substation.
4.0 Literature Review: -
1. Before preparing a report on “Pole mounted substation and plinth mounted
substation" we must know the basic information related to safety rules for
substation.
2. We must know basic concept related to substation.
3. Before explaining the concept of safety, we have to know the working of the
substation.
4. Also, we must know all basic links related to substations.
5. We must know the detailed information about “Safety"

SUBSTATION SAFETY PRACTICES

While most of the security practices stem out of logic and sensible learning,
some potential drawback areas could skip attention. Let’s take a glance at a
number of the necessary safety measures which will minimise speculative
security threats ordinarily encountered in substations.

Securing Perimeter space

Minimising safety threats from the outside setting may be a key con cern that
desires attention. putting in metallic or non-metallic fences on the perimeter
is guaranteed to stop incidents of invasive, deliberate scaling, stray animals
foraying into the premises, and a lot of significantly, youngsters gaining
entry into the realm. Washouts and structural harm to enclosures need prompt
attention. Use of applicable warning signs on the fencing is suggested.
NESC needs such enclosures to be seven feet or a lot of tall, and permits use
of each fencing and strands of wire (three or more) to attain this height. NESC
conjointly emphasises the requirement for durable temporary fencing, just in
case the permanent structures need extensions or repairs.

Restricting or Prohibiting visitant Access

Substations aren't meant to support visitant traffic. it's potential to forestall

or cut back the chance of accidents by either limiting or all prohibiting guests
from coming into the place. In unavoidable circumstances, guests in the
middle of intimate with personnel is allowed access, however with the
required safety precautions and PPE.
Monitoring/ Guiding vehicle traffic

It is necessary to watch and guide vehicles coming into a station to make sure
that there's ample clearance between objects on the roof of the vehicle and
therefore the overhead lines and elevated instrumentation inside the station.
Vehicle drivers should proactively guarantee safe navigation additionally.
Similarly, the operations of mobile hoisting instrumentation and cranes
conjointly got to be supervised and controlled by station personnel.

Prohibiting instrumentation Storage

Substations also tend to double up as storage for instrumentation and

different material that realize use within the atmosphere, resulting in a
minimum of some of unwarranted risks. It not solely will increase sound
within the space as materials get shifted in and out of the power, however
conjointly lures thieves on the lookout for high -priced electrical components/
instrumentation. Not everybody getting into the station in such case s ar
totally tuned in to the risks they're exposed to and accidents that they will
accidentally trigger. Prohibiting instrumentation storage in substations will
stop undue accidents.

Securing Battery Stores

Battery storage rooms are notable to be the sources of chemical hazards, and
ar best secured with authorised access. whereas it's vital to make sure the
storage aras are well-ventilated, regular maintenance helps discover units
that require replacements, recharging or address gas, caustic or acid leaks
common in batteries.

Providing PPEs

Use of PPEs is necessary once operating in a station. Flame retardant/ arc -

rated/ chemical resistant wear, gloves, safety glasses, shields, face masks,
hard hats, associated steel-toed shoes should be an integral a part of the PPE
assortment created obtainable for staff.
Training Personnel

Training is one in every of the foremost vital safety practices, while not that
all alternative safety measures stay ineffective. Safety coaching should make
sure that station personnel:
Understand the protection threats that occur the work setting.
Appreciate the importance of PPE, use and maintain each bit in a very correct
manner.
Know how every instrumentation functions, what elements ar energised and
what voltages, clearance needs, risk concerned and levels of protection ar
needed to figure on the instrumentation.
Be cautious even once around de-energised instrumentation.
Conduct routine inspections to confirm that {the ara|the world|the realm} and
instrumentation are safe to be used before every task.
Maintain the prescribed clearance from every style of instrumentation, and
handle operations remotely if the choice is offered.
Use appropriate protecting vesture and instrumentation as guaranteed by the
severity of the danger concerned in every task.

Installing Security instrumentality

Despite the most effective of precautions and practices, there's forever a clear
stage of security breach. putting in security instrumentality like cameras and
motion sensors in vantage points not solely facilitate deter or thwart
unauthorised access and break-ins, however additionally track the movement
of personnel and instrumentality to confirm safe operations and maintenance.
It additionally pays to stay potential unsound zones bright lighted.

6 Basic Rules to make sure station Safety

Rule No. 1, CLEARANCE

Enough clearance from energized elements ought to be provided to avoid

accidental contact with them. If that can’t be met, live elements ought to be
guarded or surrounded.

Rule No. 2, MINIMUM HEIGHT

A minimum height from the bottom to any ungrounded a part of an electrical

installation ought to be 8’-6”, thus someone staying on the bottom can’t bit
a station component or its half which can become energized accidentally. as
an example, all-time low of a post nonconductor supporting Associate in
Nursing energized bus doesn't commonly have any potential.

Rule No. 3, ILLUMINATION

There ought to be decent illumination for personnel to obviously see their

surroundings and perform any work safely. needed illumination levels area
unit laid out in NESC® [1].

Rule No. 4, PASSAGEWAYS

All passageways and stairs ought to be wide enough for personnel to navigate
them safely, adequate railing ought to be provided, and floor openings ought
to have guard rails.

Rule No. 5, EVACUATION ROUTES

Exits should be clearly marked and evacuation routes ought to be free from
obstructions. counting on the perform of the building (for example,
management house), it's going to need many exits to avoid personnel being
treed throughout instrumentation fault, fire, etc.

Rule No. 6, GROUNDING

All station auriferous structures, fences, and instrumentation tanks ought to

be connected to a station ground grid that ought to be designed to make sure
that step and bit potential values square measure not up to those stipulated
within the applicable standards.
