    What is the plot structure of the story?

    • PLOT STRUCTURE:

    • Exposition: This occurs when the husband introduces the invitation to the
    reception. This is where you get a perspective of the characters and
    their personality traits. (Mme. Loisel and her husband are introduced).

    • Rising Action: This happens when Mme. Loisel borrows the necklace from
    Mme. Foister. This also includes Mme. Loisel purchasing the dress and
    the couple going to the reception.

    • Climax: This event happens when Mme. Loisel loses the necklace and they
    replace it with a similar necklace. When Mme. Loisel and her husband
    purchase the new necklace, they have debt, in which they take 10 years
    to pay for.

    • Resolution: Mme. Loisel finds out the necklace is worthless after finally
    paying it off and telling the truth to Mme. Foister.
    Justification of the Title
    • The whole narrative of the story ‘The Necklace’ revolves
    around a young woman Matilda, who in her foolish pride
    borrows a necklace inviting misery and sorrow for
    herself as well as for her husband. The ‘necklace’ has
    been lost and the Loisels fall into a tremendous debt.
    They spend the next ten years of their life in paying debt
    for the replacement of the lost necklace. Their entire life
    moves around impoverished everyday saga of misery
    and hunger and the necklace, in fact, changes the very
    course of their life. Also, it is against the back drop of the
    necklace that Matilda’s pride and dishonesty are
    highlighted. At the same time, the necklace serves a
    twist at the end as it turns out to be a fake one. The
    story is, hence, most aptly titled as ‘The Necklace’.
