Learning Outcomes:

1. The interactions and inter-dependency of organisms upon each other and

their environment.

This is important because it helps us understand the relationships between

organisms and food sources. This information is valuable for addressing
nutrition concerns like food insecurity, nutrient deficiencies, and non-
communicable diseases.

2. Demonstrate knowledge of human nutritional needs and the role of nutrition

in improving individual health and the societal economic impact of food
choices.

Understanding nutritional needs is important so that we are aware of what

our bodies need for growth and maintenance. By gaining more knowledge in
human nutritional needs we can begin to make informed food choices and
lessen the risk of developing chronic diseases that can be expensive to treat.

3. Explain the impact that the food industry has on human food choices and the
subsequent relationship to health and disease at the individual, societal, and
environmental level.

Food companies promote high calorie convenience foods that are typically full
of unhealthy fats, sugar, and salt. This greatly contributes to chronic diseases
like obesity.
