Professional Dispositions Statement Assessment

As a professional educator, I hold high expectations for students, believing that all

students can learn and be successful at their own pace and level. All students learn differently,

and a variety of teaching strategies should be used to see to their different needs. I believe in the

respect of diversity, learning about our differences and celebrating them together. I believe in

fairness. Not that everyone gets the same thing, but everyone gets what they need to be

successful. I believe it is important to model fairness and teach it to our students.

As a professional educator I believe in conducting oneself professionally. A teacher is a

role model and should display respectable and responsible qualities such as punctuality and

professional dress. This will teach students that their education is important and something to be

taken seriously. I believe in self-reflection. Reflection of lessons given will help to discover

things that worked and things that did not. Reflection will help teachers become better at their

craft by analyzing the outcome of their lessons and improving upon them.

As a professional educator I believe in boosting students’ curiosity by asking questions

and promoting critical thinking. I believe in honesty. It is important to model honesty to

students. If you do something wrong let the students know you made a mistake. Building

relationships with students is a good way to get students to be able to be honest with you (GCU

Academics, 2014).

I believe as a professional educator is important to show students and families genuine

warmth, friendliness and caring, and supporting them emotionally as well. I believe that before

being able to learn, students’ personal needs must be met. Advocacy for students and families is

important as an educator. Teachers are lifelines for families. We are there to help families
3

succeed in life. We should fight for them to make sure they are getting all the help they need to

be successful members of society.

As a professional educator, I believe in lifelong learning. Everything is forever changing

and evolving, there are always new things to learn and new ways to help students succeed. As an

educator and role model, the more knowledge we have the more we will be able to help. This

means that the learning and education for teachers should never come to an end. I am dedicated

to being a lifelong learner, always trying to better myself for my students and their families.

My self-assessment supports my professional disposition statement. I feel that I strongly

agree with 98 percent of the dispositions listed and the other 2 percent I am still working on

getting better at. The dispositions that I talked about in my statement go hand-in-hand with the

dispositions from the assessment.

Through my studies I believe I have grown in such areas as learning about diversity and

learners’ different learning styles. When I started college, I did not know that there were 5

different types of preferred learning styles or what that meant. I now know there are many

different strategies to support students’ differences. Allowing students to choose how they

would like to show you what they learned is a good way to do accurate assessments. I have also

learned the importance of families and supporting them as well as the student. With the success

of a family comes the success of a student.

The Model Code of Ethics is connected to professional dispositions because they both

discuss the responsibilities of educators. They talk about what an educator should do and how

they should act as members of a community because they are role models and intricate parts of

children’s lives. They talk about what it means to be an upstanding citizen and good human

being to aid in human flourishing.

I feel that there is always room for improvement no matter how good you are at

something. I will continue to be a lifelong learner. I will do my best to support my community

and learn about it and its culture. I will attend seminars and classes on anything that could help

me be a better teacher and learn how to support my students in new ways. I will collaborate with

other educators and learn from them as well. I will do whatever it takes to support my students

to the best of my abilities.
