If you wish to become a delegate to the Y7 Summit, please complete the following question:

The 47th G7 Summit is scheduled to take place in June 2021, hosted by the UK. As the G7's only youth
engagement mechanism, the Y7 Summit is tasked with providing a youth lens to the topics of greatest
concern to G7 nations, potentially to include the following:

1. Climate change
2. Digital and technology
3. Global economy
4. Health

Choosing one of the above topics, what are the main challenges surrounding this topic within the context
of the G7? What can Canada bring to the international discussion? (maximum 1800 characters)

The most prominent issues were transition to low carbon economies and loss of biodiversity and its
benefits such as ecological-economic health. The proposed G7 solutions mechanism focused on voluntary
and nationally determined targets to foster a global biodiversity framework. However, lack of
accountability and the unequal distribution of the burden hinder success. The G7 is an international forum
that operates on the basis of international norms. Accountability hinges on voluntary targets which means
there is incentive to free-ride when no state wants to pay the costs of mitigation. Currently, COVID-19
recovery efforts may incentivize states to prioritize efforts towards economic recovery over climate
mitigation.

Canada is a mid-power state and an adroit negotiator. Subsequently, Canada can be the representative
mediator for North American interests. Additionally, the Trudeau and Biden administrations can
cooperate owing to their pro-climate mitigation agendas. Any viable climate mitigation treaty needs the
U.S. and Canada can secure its presence. Moreover, Canada can lead by example by demonstrating the
link between environmental and economic health. The transportation sector is responsible for a sizable
chunk of emissions. The Canadian federal government has already pledged $1.8 billion nationally for
public transit as part of COVID-19 recovery. The success of these recommendations can incentivize other
states to acknowledge the correlation between environmental and economic health and they can refer to
Canada as a case study. This would mitigate incentive to free ride and encourage accountability because
states have proof of gains.
If you wish to become a delegate to the Y20 Summit, please complete the following question:

The G20 Summit is scheduled to take place in July 2021, hosted by Italy. As the G20's only youth
engagement mechanism, the Y20 Summit is tasked with providing a youth lens to the topics of greatest
concern to G20 nations, potentially to include the following:

1. Innovation, Future of Work and Digitalization

2. Inclusion
3. Sustainability, Climate Change and Environment

Choosing one of the above topics, what are the main challenges surrounding this topic within the context
of the G20? What can Canada bring to the international discussion? Your response will be assessed on
both the clarity and coherence of the opinion expressed (maximum 1800 characters)

In terms of Sustainability, Climate Change, and the Environment the most prominent challenge would be
providing sustainable energy through the Energy Security, Economic Efficiency, and Environment +
Safety framework. The G20 includes both developed and developing states. The developed states are
reluctant to pay the majority of the costs of mitigation. Fully developed and fossil fuel dependent states
such as Suadi Arabia and the U.S. would be especially resistant to drastic reduction measures. Similarly,
developing states such as India and China argue they need fossil fuels to develop and it is unfair for them
to pay the costs of mitigation because developed states grew at the expense of the environment. This is
an impasse that can be resolved through shared but differentiated responsibility with Canada as the liaison
between developed and developing states.

Traditionally, Canada is a mid-power state which has historically played the role of mediator.
Specifically, Canada could capitalize on its ties with the Western states and they could collectively agree
on their overall reservation points. Canada’s influence would be especially potent because it can coax the
U.S. into action. The Trudeau and Biden administrations can cooperate owing to their climate mitigation
agendas. Any viable climate mitigation treaty needs the U.S. and Canada can secure its presence. The
resulting agreement would be shared with developing states and Canada could help facilitate the ensuing
negotiations.

In articulate point form, please list the most relevant experiences that make you a qualified delegate for
the summit.
Please organize your qualifications along the following three categories: 1) Interpersonal skills (i.e., teamwork, communication,
leadership) 2) Professional, volunteer, and/or academic background 3) Civic engagement: (maximum 1800 characters)

YDC is looking for individuals who understand youth advocacy and the importance of engaging
Canadian youth in pushing for the adoption of recommendations emerging from the Summit. As a
Canadian delegate, explain how you would encourage both government and civil society to act on the
Summit recommendations before, during, and after the summit.

In your answer, please make reference to your professional, volunteer and/or academic experiences, using
clear examples to demonstrate how you would approach your role. Your response will be assessed on
both the clarity and coherence of the opinion expressed (maximum 1500 characters).

Prior to the summit, I would start with my school community by alerting my classmates and professors to
the themes that will be discussed during the summit. My colleagues are experts in the themes that will be
discussed at the summit and I plan on utilizing their knowledge when preparing for the summit. In
addition, I would reach out to the Minister of Parliament at the federal and provincial levels and I would
ask them specific questions about their plan of action regarding the themes of the summit.

During the summit, I would actively keep in touch with my colleagues and government officials. My
academic background in global affairs and sustainability would be an asset in terms of understanding
Canadian and global needs. Post the summit, I would write an article for my school’s premier academic
magazine on international affairs detailing the outcomes of the summit. Furthermore, I will
actively plan for a call to action with the government officials with expert guidance from my colleagues.
One of my colleagues is part of Prime Minister Trudeau’s Youth Council, I would especially seek her out
and share my plans with her to get her feedback and the pipeline she provides to the Prime Minister.
