Metrical Romance – A metrical romance is a form of narrative poem that tells a story of valor, gallantry,

and adventure. Chivalric poetry is another term of it. They frequently have a sense of mystery and the
supernatural. From the middle Ages through the 19 th century, this was a popular form of entertainment.

CHARACTERISTIC OF METRICAL ROMANCE

-called romantic poetry and medieval romance.

- Dominant poetic form among the royalty, nobility, and wealthy

landowners during the renaissance period.

-Chivalry, love, and supernatural creatures like fairies, dragons and wizards are dominant themes.

- Despite the name, it does not always include a love story.

-If a metrical tale is simply a story in verse, Metrical Romance is a heroic story in verse.

-Almost always have a happy ending

-Focuses on the Hero of the story and his/her excellent moral character.

THE LADY OF SHALOTT

-The most popular in metrical romance.

-A lyrical ballad by the 19th century English poet Alfred Tennyson.

-it tells the tragic story of Elaine of Astolat, a young noblewoman stranded in a tower up the river from
Camelot.

-Story of a lady who imprisoned on an Island.

-The poem also provides a detailed description of the place around her and the movement of the people
in Camelot.
