ØThe list with all topics can be found on moodle, the topic selection will work on a „First come, first served“-basis
in an open google sheet, starting this weekend until Friday 23rd of March 2023.

ØAssigned topics must be completed cancelling this course after 23.03.2023 will result in grade „5“.

Ø Each student must create his/her own case study (i.e. there will be individual case studies. Only the
presentations will be held in teams)!

ØBetween Friday, June 23rd and Friday, June 30th Presentation week COMPULSARY ATTENDANCE on
presentation days!

ØThe timetable with specific dates will be published on moodle, presentations in groups of four.

General Expectations

Re-Invention of the wheel? - No.

Nobel price winning paper? - No.

Sound scientific work - Yes!


Scientific writing style (not „newspaper“ style)
Citation of sources
Definition of the research structure / guiding question
Definition (and application!) of research methodology
Thorough study of relevant literature
Evaluation of the quality of sources
Presentation of the body of knowledge, including comparing and contrasting of sources in order to reach a
conclusion.

Scientific Writing

Formal requirements

Scope: 11-13 pages

Paper has to be written in English (AE or BE)

Format: should be based on template „Formatvorlage der Hochschule“ but respect (‘IIWM-Leitfaden’ on moodle):
Arial 11
1.5 spacing
Page border: left (3.5 cm), right (2.0 cm), top (3.5 cm), bottom (2 cm)
Full justification (Blocksatz) with automatic syllable separation (Silbentrennung)

Follow common academic citation rules! Recommended citation tool “Zotero”.

Submission of papers and presentations in paper print and by upload (PDF-format). DATE_Surname_topic# e.g.

Principles and Structure

• All topics focus on a country I region I city I submarket

• All these four are levels of your analysis

• Analysis is structured in economical (A) and spatial (B) parts

• For the conclusion (C) choose a submarket of real estate production that derives from the analysis

• Individual topics may be added in the list, they have to meet the above requirements

• The formation of groups of four is mandatory (unless uneven numbers)

A Economic Base Analysis

Aim of the economic base analysis:

…is to understand economic changes taking place a community / town / city.

Questions asked are

• What are the growing and declining sectors of the economy?

• What is the current employment situation in the local economy?

• How is the local economy doing compared to its neighbors and other communities in the state?

• What are the new opportunities for job growth?

B Urban Governance Analysis

Aim of the urban governance analysis:

…is to understand the socio-spatial and political prepositions of the market environment.

Questions asked are

• Does the city belong to a metropolitan area or is it a peripheral city?

• How is the physical structure described and which are important districts (e.g. City Center, CBD, Housing
Areas…)?

• Is there a strategic urban planning framework existing (e.g. Masterplan; Urban Development Program etc)? Is it
depicting planning goals related to certain industries and/or districts?

C Conclusion and Outlook

Aim of Conclusion and Outlook Investment chances in a chosen submarket:

…is to deploy the chances and obstacles of investing based on the findings of A & B. An outlook can be given in
general or with regard to a chosen real estate market segment / submarket.

Questions asked are

• Which are risks and opportunities of the given city as an investment environment deriving from the Analysis
Part A and B

• What market segment might be a promising investment and where should I search for properties?

• Possible submarkets: Office, Housing, Retail, Hospitality, Logistics, Production, Public Administration …

Presentation and Examination

Organisation and Guidelines

Team presentation with 3 or 4, maximum 6 students per topic. While each student must create an own written
case study, the presentation will be held as a team. Teams will first present and then answer audience’s questions
in a discussion.

Presentation Time: 3 or 4 x 10-12 minutes (=30-36 minutes (group of 3) or 40-48 minutes (group of 4) in total per
topic) Presentations must match time requirement sharply!

Discussion Time: 5 minutes per participant. (Other students will ask presentation group!)

Presentation guidelines will be published on moodle

> COMPULSARY ATTENDANCE on presentation days!


Structure of the team presentation should be clear.
Each student should talk for 12-15 minutes and present a clearly defined part of his topic.
Presentation needs to be a presentation and not a lecture!
(i.e. do not reproduce your paper on slides, be courageous and dare to focus on key points and leave other

Grading

Written seminar paper 60%

Presentation and discussion: 40%

Please note:

Participation in your presentation session is mandatory and will be checked. Absence without medical certificate
will lead to failure (5.0).

Students will be required to ask the presenting students questions (prior allocation of questioners among the
groups)!
