Obstacles Encountered by Students Learning

Mathematics During
Pandemic

Introduction
Education must continue even in times of crisis weather it may be a calamity,
disaster, emergency, quarantine or even war (Leonor Magtolis Briones 2021).
Even if schools are closed student’s rights can still be met. Exploring the various
learning options is not straightforward at this time, but it is feasible. With the
presence of the unseen enemy, it undergoes a change in learning and giving
students hard time catching up the given lessons. Pandemic gives a large part
being obstacle in studying and is causing the development in studying slower.
Muhammed Akat, Kasim Karatas (2020) stated that “Pandemics have been seen in
many periods throughout history. Pandemics are diseases that causes millions of
people to die and have great negative effects on the psychological health of
society. It also disrupted the students’ educational process.”

Without a doubt the rapid increase of cases greatly affects the daily lives of
many. Midsalip National Highschool implementing blended learning which is
composed of modular and online learning modality may have continue the
studies of but is causing delay processing of learning of Grade 9 Milky way. More
responsibilities were brought by these kind of learning modalities that made
students realize they obtain lesser knowledge and causes lack of understanding
towards mathematics. There are different factors affecting students commonly
time management, study habits and interest towards mathematics. There are also
factors that others don’t know such as personal problem; learning math
independently without any help but the modules given, emotional problems; like
anxiety disorders, learning problems; having problem understanding the given
instructions and needing help to learn but not having someone.
High school students still struggling to understand, survey shows that two-
thirds (67%) found it challenging to understand the two modalities: modular and
online learning. Ten out of ten students from grade 9 milky way admitted that
they have been brawling with mathematics.

These different factors affecting students causes big impact that resulted to
hard time learning. Amidst the pandemic these problems were made and
continuously stealing time that causes a lot of reasons for learners to give their
answers. Maria Kalman anchored that “I truly believe that there is solution in
every problems”. Thus, the researcher would like to know why these certain
hindrances are blocking students’ way towards learning; to compare if it is the
same knowledge gained by students experienced face to face and blended
learning.
