FUNDRAISING TIP

Ask for a (Small) Favor

Have you ever heard of The Ben Franklin Effect? In simple terms,
it’s a psychological phenomenon where someone does a favor for
someone else, then thinks more fondly of the person they helped.
It’s an example of cognitive bias: Our brains tell us that we must
really like someone if we do a favor for them!

You can use the Ben Franklin Effect to your advantage by asking
a donor to do a favor for you in your donation receipt. The favor
should be small, non-financial, and easy to complete.

Try asking your donor to watch a video, follow you on social media,
or read a short article related to your mission. You might also want
to try asking donors to fill out a brief survey—it’s a great way to
collect more information about your donors.
