Buddy Code of Conduct

2023-2024 (May 23 Revision)

The purpose of the Buddy Code of Conduct is to set forth our core values,
responsibilities, and expectations. Being a Buddy is an enjoyable and rewarding endeavor, which
focuses on providing mentor support for our early college freshmen and serving as a role model
for our peers at Burges High School. Our Buddies represent the best of what our Burges Early
College High School has to offer, and we have an obligation to lead positive lives both on and off
of campus.

As a Buddy, I acknowledge and understand the following:

● I promise to uphold the “Buddy Way.” This includes our core values of unity, service,
reliability, integrity, and inspiration.
● Be respectful of all members of the group, including mentors, mentees, and other
students. This includes respecting people's differences in race, ethnicity, gender, sexual
orientation, religion, and other personal characteristics.
● I pledge to commit my time, knowledge, and guidance to assist our early college
students manage the jump from middle school to college.
● I vow to serve as a positive example for our mentees. This includes:
○ Maintaining academic eligibility;
○ Participating in extracurricular activities;
○ refraining from participation in illegal activities (including drugs and alcohol).
○ refraining from any conduct that could be considered discrimination or
harassment;
○ not engaging in improper relationships with our program’s mentees.
● I commit to serving as a positive influence both on and off campus, including on social
media. This may include:
○ maintaining a social media presence that avoids harmful, offensive, sexual,
violent, or illegal content.

● Be honest and trustworthy. This means keeping confidentiality, following through on

commitments, and being truthful in all interactions.
● I will support Burges High School, our surrounding community, and the city of El Paso. In
doing so, I will earn at least 5 service points each month, for a total of at least 25 service
points each semester.
● Be open to learning and growing. This means being willing to share your own
experiences, listening to the experiences of others, and always striving to be a better
mentor.
● I pledge to abide by all school rules and guidelines set forth in our district’s student
code of conduct.
● In the event that I do not abide by this code of conduct, I understand that I may be
subject to disciplinary measures.
○ For minor infractions, Buddies will receive a written warning for the first incident.
If the Buddy is found to commit a second violation, then the decision may be
made by the Buddies Sponsors or the Executive Buddy Team for removal from
the group.
○ For more severe infractions, Buddies may have their membership revoked
immediately by Buddy Sponsors. You will not be allowed to apply for
membership in the future.

By signing the document, I affirm that I have read, understand, and agree to abide by the Buddy
Code of Conduct. I understand that failure to adhere to these procedures may result in my
removal from participation in the program.
