Creating Student Supports

This project will provide you with the opportunity to begin to think like an inclusive educator in
a supported context. This project asks you to address your emerging inclusive philosophies and
how you might apply inclusive best practices when teaching diverse students. Once in the field,
you will identify one (or more) students that might benefit from inclusive support in some
capacity (e.g. academic support, social support, behavioral support) in order to succeed in
school.

You will gather information about the student through observation, informal interactions with
the student, and conversations with your mentor. To protect the confidentiality of the student
you must create a pseudonym for them when writing about them in this assignment.

Over the course of the semester, you will work to (1) develop a positive student profile for the
student (2) recommend supports and strategies to help the student succeed in the classroom
and beyond and (3) set 2 - 4 goals for the student aligned with the profile and supports.

Your profile and support should be detailed, holistic, and comprehensive. Observations must be
well-supported by detailed description of specific events, conversations, etc. and support
recommendations / teaching strategies must be directly connected to the positive student
profile. The profile, goals, and student supports must be respectful in tone of both students and
teachers, clearly organized, and professionally written.

You will receive feedback from me and practicum peers and have the opportunity to revise
using feedback before turning it in for a score.

I am available to assist you throughout the project to problem solve and ensure successful
completion of the project.

with the aides and teachers in those classrooms. They insisted that they didn’t need this
kind of aide and claimed they would do better in a general ed classroom, and the school
made that happen except that Guitar isn’t doing any better.

Part 2 Identify and design effective supports that will help the student achieve in your class
and across environments.
Academic Supports
- Accommodating assignments that allow for Guitar to do something hands-on like
turning book responses into a physical medium like drawing a scene from the book.
- For bigger projects, allow Guitar to pick the topic of the assignment, so they can study
something that is interesting and engaging for them.

Behavioral/Social Supports
- Let Guitar work in the hall if the classroom is too overwhelming for them.
- Let Guitar listen to music during class work time.

Other Supports

Part 3 Identify and design 2-4 goals you would like to see the student achieve.

engage better with the project, as evidenced by a quality final product.

Goal #2
When given permission to listen to music in class, student will be able to
concentrate on work, as evidenced by the completion of assignments in a
timely manner.

Goal #3
When given the opportunity to make a project/assignment something physical,
student will be more engaged and interested in the project, as evidenced by
the quality completion of project/assignment.
