The Government of India does not fully meet the minimum standards for the elimination of trafficking but is making significant efforts to do so.
These efforts included identifying more trafficking victims, primarily victims of bonded and forced labor. Efforts to audit government-run or -funded
shelters remained inadequate, and shortcomings in protection services for victims, especially children, remained unaddressed. The government
detained some foreign trafficking victims in state-run shelters for extended periods due to lengthy or non-existent repatriation processes. Many
victims waited years to receive central-government mandated compensation, and often state and district legal offices did not proactively request the
compensation or assist victims in filing applications. (Source :https://www.state.gov/reports/2022-trafficking-in-persons-report/india/)
The pandemic has negatively affected livelihoods and the economy in general.Millions of people working in industries such as the garment sector,
agriculture and farming, to manufacturing and domestic work have lost their sources of income. The UNODC believes that those who continue to
work in these sectors – where trafficking is frequently detected – may also face more exploitation because of the need to lower production costs
due to economic shocks.
Victims of trafficking often suffer from serious physical and psychological problems. The impacts of the trauma of sexual exploitation manifest as
health-issues , reproductive issues , mental problems , malnutrition, and alcohol and drug use and addictions. Trafficking victims require specialized
recovery programs that offer shelter, nutrition, and appropriate medical treatment, as well as psychological evaluation, counseling, taking care of
their mental and emotional well being ,education programs and life skills training etc..Hence there is an urge for creating a shelter and wellness
center for human trafficking victims to provide a vital resource for survivors of trafficking, helping them heal and build new lives.
Relevence of this project?
The project of a transitional house and wellness center for human trafficking survivors is highly relevant and necessary. Human trafficking is a
severe violation of human rights and involves the exploitation of vulnerable individuals for various forms of labor, including sexual exploitation,
forced labor, and organ trafficking. Survivors of human trafficking often face physical, psychological, and emotional trauma, as well as a range of
practical challenges such as finding a safe place to live and access to basic needs like food and healthcare.
A transitional house and wellness center can provide a safe and supportive environment for survivors to recover and rebuild their lives. The
center can offer a range of services, including counseling, medical care, vocational training, startup supports and legal assistance. These services
can help survivors overcome the trauma they have experienced and gain the skills and resources they need to move forward.
Additionally, a transitional house and wellness center can play a critical role in preventing further exploitation of survivors. By providing a safe
and supportive environment, survivors are less likely to fall back into the hands of traffickers or become vulnerable to other forms of exploitation.
Also Transitional and wellness center for human trafficking victims is feasible from social, environmental, economic, and technological perspectives
such as the center can offer vocational training and job placement services, which can help survivors gain employment and financial
independence. Sustainable design practices, such as the use of energy-efficient materials, and also more spaces that connects with nature will be
provided in the projects to help improve the mental and physical well being of the victims which is important. It also promotes awareness and
education about human trafficking, which is essential for preventing future incidents of trafficking.
Overall, a transitional house and wellness center is essential for supporting survivors of human trafficking and helping them transition to a life of
independence and self-sufficiency.

The Ujjawala Scheme is a Comprehensive Scheme for Prevention of Trafficking and Rescue, Rehabilitation and Re-Integration of Victims of Trafficking
for Commercial Sexual Exploitation.one of its objective is to provide rehabilitation services both immediate and long-term to the victims by providing
basic amenities/needs such as shelter, food, clothing, medical treatment including counselling, legal aid and guidance and vocational training.
Although there are some temporary shelters, there are no long-term facilities or rehabilitation programs where victims of human trafficking can stay
safely until they are strong enough to reintegrate into society. So with the help of this scheme and NGO’s working for human Trafficking I would like to
propose a transitional and wellness centre in kerala for human trafficking victims.
Activities identified can be divided into three part for this projects

Muktangan Rehabilitation Center in Pune is a well-known center that has been providing addiction treatment services for over 30
years.
This architecture attempts at raising a sense of belonging and sharing between the users and therefore indirectly causing recoveries.
It has a variety of land use around it, which doesn't completely isolate itself from the city. Lastly it has a good amount of open space
inside the vicinity of the center. The goal of the design was to strike a harmonious balance between giving patients freedom and
ensuring their safety. This is also the primary goal of my design hence it is important to study this space.
