DEF defrost mode for after-treatment diagnosis

DESCRIPTION: If performing after-treatment tests with the PT-BOX in cold weather and the temperature is below the
required setting an ADBLUE DEFROST error message will be displayed (Fig. 1) and prevent after-treatment diagnosis
tests from being performed.

Figure 1 – DEF defrost mode error

REQUIRED ACTION: Validate DEF tank temperature before starting any after-treatment diagnosis tests.

PROCEDURE: Before starting work, read and follow all “servicing safety precautions” as listed in the machine
and attachment operating/service manuals and parts catalogs.

1. Start the engine and validate the DEF tank temperature with the PT-Box. Select the “DIAGNOSIS”
menu then “PARAMETER READINGS” and cycle through the pages until “ADBLUE TANK
TEMPERATURE” is read. This will display the current DEF temperature reading from the DEF
tank. (Fig. 2)

Figure 2 – DEF Tank Temp

Electrical & Electronics - Troubleshooting

Figure 2 – DEF Tank Temp

2. A minimum DEF tank temperature of 22° Celsius (72° Fahrenheit) is needed before performing any after-
treatment diagnosis. If the temperature is below 22° C set the machine to high idle to warm the temperature to
22° C.

3. If the machine is in derate a counter reset will need to be done to enable the machine to run at high idle.

4. Once the DEF tank temp is at required temperature the after-treatment diagnosis tests can be performed. If
the engine is turned off to run an after treatment test in cold weather the machine may have to be restarted
and warmed up again for a few minutes to resume testing.

5. Any active codes for the dosing module or supply module will also prevent after-treatment diagnosis tests
from being performed. All active codes need to be addressed and resolved before proceeding with diagnosis.

Fuel injector leakage test

Take Caution when performing tests as fuel may be under pressure

Figure 1
1. With the engine and ignition off, remove the
injector return line from the rear of the
cylinder head. Plug the line with the capped
fitting supplied in the kit, see figure 1.

2. Attach the clear hose supplied in the kit to the

fuel return connection on the cylinder head
(figure 2), and set the open end in the 100 ml
measuring cup. Have a stop watch ready to
time 60 seconds.

3. Have a helper start the engine while you hold

the hose in the cup. For the most accurate
results, raise the hose above the connection at
the cylinder head allowing the air to be
removed from the hose as the fuel flows Figure 2
towards the end.

4. Once all of the air is removed from the line,

place the end in the 100 ml measuring cup and
immediately start the timer. (If the amount of
return fuel exceeds 100 ml before 60 seconds,
stop the engine, switch to a larger measuring
container and restart the test.)

5. Measure the amount of fuel in the cup when the

stop watch reaches 60 seconds and shut the
engine off. Refer to the chart below for the specific
leakages based on the engine injector. (See the
chart to identify which serial numbers use which
injectors.

6. If the measured amount of leakage is over the

maximum amount, follow the procedure on page
12 to determine which injector(s) will need
replacing.

Engine Model Max Volume Time

4.5L 125kw 60 ml 60 sec
6.7L 151kw 80 ml 60 sec
6.7L 210kw 80 ml 60 sec

Identifying leaking injectors

Caution – Always shut the engine off and allow at least 10 minutes for the fuel pressure to dissipate
before working on any fuel system components

1. If the injector return leakage is above the maximum specification, first check the torque on the fuel manifold retaining
nuts. Torque all retaining nuts to 50 ± 5 Nm (37 ± 3ft/lbs), and perform the injector leakage test again.

2. If the injector leakage remains above the maximum specifications of 80ml, perform the individual injector block off
procedure by removing the #1 fuel supply line and installing the block off cap (supplied in the leakage kit) onto the fuel
rail #1 fuel supply connection. Note: It may be necessary to remove more than one injector supply line for access to
remove the fuel supply line being blocked off. All fuel supply lines must be reinstalled to their corresponding injectors,
except for the injector being tested for leakage. Make sure the reinstalled fuel supply lines are not leaking during each
leakage test, or a false result will occur.

3. Perform the injector leakage test again.

4. Document the amount of leakage and repeat the block off procedure for each injector.

5. The injectors that affect the leakage amount by over 14 ml may require replacement. See the example below.

6. With an injector blocked off, document the leakage results and enter the amount on the chart. Subtract the measured
leakage when blocked from the total measured leakage. The difference is the leakage contribution for the blocked off
injector.

7. Looking at the chart below as an example, if the total measured leakage from the injectors was measured at 230 ml,
then the injectors that will need replacing are #2 and #5, because their leakage is above 14 ml and have a combined
leakage of 180 ml.

8. After replacing the injectors with excessive leakage, re-check the total injector leakage, and verify it is within the
maximum amount of 80 ml.

Total Measured Blocked Injector # Measured Leakage Individual Injector Leakage

Leakage when blocked
230 ml 1 220 ml 230 – 220 = 10 ml
230 ml 2 150 ml 230 – 150 = 80 ml
230 ml 3 220 ml 10 ml
230 ml 4 220 ml 10 ml
230 ml 5 120 ml 110 ml
230 ml 6 220 ml 10 ml

15
5399 Rev. 1.2 Apr 2017
Electrical & Electronics - Troubleshooting

8. The results of the UDST will show a flat line for DEF pressure (red line) because the pump cannot
build pressure without the filter in place.
9. Repeat the UDST test a second time to ensure the supply module is thoroughly flushed and working
correctly.
10. When the UDST flushing procedure has been performed twice successfully, remove the bottle and
hose.
11. Reinstall the DEF module inlet hose.

2. Install the new equalizing element.
NOTE: The equalizing element must be replaced with each filter change.
3. Reinstall the clean filter cover, tighten to 20 Nm (15 lb-ft). Use a 27 mm (1 1/16 in) wrench.
4. Check that all personnel are clear of the machine before starting the engine.

5. Insert the ignition key and turn to the RUN position.

6. Perform an UDLC test again. If the DEF pressure is maintained at 9 Bar, and the pump duty cycle
stays below 20% after the pressure is stabilized at 9 Bar, continue to step 7. If the supply module
cannot maintain 9 Bar of pressure with a low pump duty cycle, contact Tigercat Service Group for
further instructions.
7. Sound horn to warn personnel of machine start-up.
8. Start the engine and check for leaks. If no leaks are present, have the operator operate the unit for 30
minutes under load. If no fault codes return, perform a counter reset and return the unit to service.

Electrical & Electronics - Troubleshooting

Context:
If during DEF/AdBlue® system normal operation the pressure exceeds 11.00 bar (159.50 psi) the Engine Control Unit
(ECU) will monitor the pressure until it falls below 10.75 bar (155.88 psi). If the pressure does not fall below 10.75 bar
(155.88 psi) within 60s, this fault will be set.

Cause:
The ECU has determined that an excessive pressure condition exists in the DEF/AdBlue® system.

Possible failure modes:

1. Faulty DEF/AdBlue® system pressure or back flow line (tube), restricted.

2. Faulty DEF/AdBlue® system filter in supply module back flow connector, restricted.
3. Faulty DEF/AdBlue® system throttle in supply module back flow connector, restricted.
4. Faulty DEF/AdBlue® system check valve in supply module back flow connector does not open.
5. Faulty supply module, pump defective.
6. Faulty supply module, pressure sensor defective.

Solution:

1. Verify fault is present and active.

Use the PT-Box tool to check the status of this fault.

A. If the fault is present and active, continue with Step 2.

B. If the fault is no longer present or in an inactive state, the fault may be intermittent and not currently active.
Continue with Step 7.
2. Check for blockage or damage in the DEF/AdBlue® system pressure or back flow line (tube). Visually

and tactually inspect the system pressure and back flow lines for restrictions and/or damage. There

should be no blockage or damage.

A. If blockage or damage is found, repair or replace the line (tube).

B. If no blockage or damage is found, continue with Step 3.

3. Check the DEF/AdBlue® system Supply module back flow connector contents.

Visually and tactually inspect the filter, throttle, and check valve internal to the Supply module back flow connector
for restrictions and/or damage.

There should be no blockage or damage.

A. If blockage or damage is found, repair or replace as needed.

B. If no blockage or damage is found, continue with Step 4.

40
5399 Rev. 1.2 Apr 2017
Electrical & Electronics - Troubleshooting

4. Check for related DEF/AdBlue® system faults.

Use the PT-Box Tool to determine if fault DTC-195A / (SPN-6490) [DEF/AdBlue supply module pump motor pressure
sensor voltage is higher than expected] or DTC-723A / (SPN-29242) [DEF/AdBlue supply module pump motor short
circuit to ground failure] is currently active.

A. If either fault DTC-195A / (SPN-6490) [DEF/AdBlue supply module pump motor pressure sensor voltage is higher
than expected] or fault DTC-723A / (SPN-29242) [DEF/AdBlue supply module pump motor short circuit to ground
failure] is present, resolve fault DTC-195A / (SPN-6490) [DEF/AdBlue supply module pump motor pressure sensor
voltage is higher than expected] and/or fault DTC-723A / (SPN-29242) [DEF/AdBlue supply module pump motor
short circuit to ground failure]. Then determine if fault DTC-1A4A / (SPN-6730) [DEF/AdBlue over pressure failure]
is also resolved.

B. If neither fault DTC-195A / (SPN-6490) [DEF/AdBlue supply module pump motor pressure sensor voltage is higher
than expected] nor fault DTC-723A / (SPN-29242) [DEF/AdBlue supply module pump motor short circuit to ground
failure] is present, continue with Step 5.

5. Test the DEF/AdBlue® system.

Use the PT-Box Tool to perform the Urea Dosing System Test (UDST) and follow the on screen

instructions. Then use the PT-Box Tool to perform an Inducement Unlock / Counter Reset.

Then verify that the fault has been resolved.

A. If the fault is resolved, return the machine to service.

B. If the fault is not resolved, continue with Step 6.

6. As the components internal to the DEF/AdBlue® system supply module are not serviceable, replace the supply
module.

Then use the PT-Box Tool to perform an Inducement Unlock / Counter Reset.

Then check to see if fault DTC-1A4A / (SPN-6730) [DEF/AdBlue over pressure failure] is resolved.

A. If the fault is resolved, return the machine to service.

B. If the fault is not resolved, continue to Step 7.

7. Visually inspect the relevant harnesses and connectors for damage, bent or dislocated pins, corroded terminals, or
broken wires. Verify that the connectors are fully installed. Flex the harnesses involved to reveal intermittent breaks
or shorts in the wiring concerned. Operate the machine while you monitor the display.

A. If you find damage or the display indicates other than normal display readings, then repair the damage discovered
during the inspection or locate and repair the other than normal display condition and verify that the error has been
resolved.

B. If you do not find damage and the display indicates only normal readings, then erase the fault code and continue

Electrical & Electronics - Troubleshooting

Context:
The instantaneous SCR catalyst efficiency is obtained from the Diesel Oxidation Catalyst (DOC) upstream NO x sensor
and the SCR downstream NOx sensor. When the Engine Control Unit (ECU) determines that the SCR catalyst efficiency
is lower than expected, this fault occurs.
The NOx sensor detects the amount of nitrogen oxides in the exhaust gases entering and exiting the SCR catalyst.
Based on this information the engine control unit regulates the amount of diesel exhaust fluid (DEF) to be injected and also measures the
efficiency of the DOC and SCR.

Cause:
The ECU calculated that the SCR catalyst efficiency is lower than expected.

Possible failure modes:

1. Faulty SCR downstream NOx sensor, measures too high values.

2. Faulty DOC upstream NOx sensor, measures too high values.
3. Faulty NH3 sensor, measures too high values.
4. Faulty DEF quality sensor, measures too high values with too low DEF concentration at the same time.
5. Faulty DEF mixture concentration, too low
6. Faulty DEF injection quantity, too low
7. Faulty DOC and Mixing chamber assembly, catalyst contamination, damage, or mixing chamber.
8. Faulty SCR assembly, catalyst contamination or damage.

Solution:

1. Run the machine until the exhaust temperature reaches 200°C (392°F) then us the PT-Box tool to data log for 20
minutes monitoring NOx values.

2. Check for related faults.

Use the PT-Box tool to check for the presence of SCR Downstream NOx sensor fault DTC-319E / (SPN-12702)
[Downstream NOx sensor values are not plausible] or DOC upstream NOx sensor fault DTC-E98E / (SPN-59790)
[Upstream NOx sensor values are not plausible].

A. If either DTC-319E / (SPN-12702) [Downstream NOx sensor values are not plausible] or DTC-E98E / (SPN-
59790) [Upstream NOx sensor values are not plausible] are present, resolve the relevant fault. Then determine
if fault DTC-2DDA / (SPN-11738) [SCR catalyst efficiency lower than first NOx production threshold level] is also
resolved.

B. If neither DTC-319E / (SPN-12702) [Downstream NOx sensor values are not plausible] nor DTC-E98E / (SPN-
59790) [Upstream NOx sensor values are not plausible] is present, continue with Step 3.
3. Check for related faults.

Use the PT-Box tool to check for the presence of SCR downstream NOx sensor fault DTC-43CE / (SPN-17358)
[Downstream NOx sensor signal is stuck at a constant value] or NH3 sensor fault DTC-38CB / (SPN-14539) [NH3
sensor signal is not changing].

A. If either DTC-43CE / (SPN-17358) [Downstream NOx sensor signal is stuck at a constant value] or DTC-38CB
/ (SPN-14539) [NH3 sensor signal is not changing] is present, resolve the relevant fault. Then determine if fault
DTC-2DDA / (SPN-11738) [SCR catalyst efficiency lower than first NOx production threshold level] is also
resolved.

B. If neither DTC-43CE / (SPN-17358) [Downstream NOx sensor signal is stuck at a constant value] nor DTC-38CB
/ (SPN-14539) [NH3 sensor signal is not changing] is present, continue with Step 4.

4. Check for related faults.

Use the PT-Box tool to check for the presence of DEF quality sensor fault DTC-4BCA / (SPN-19402) [DEF
concentration is out of range] or DTC-144E / (SPN-5198) [DEF quality sensor internal failure (Concentration value
is higher than expected)] or DTC-254E / (SPN-9550) [DEF quality sensor internal failure (Concentration value is
lower than expected)].

A. If either DTC-4BCA / (SPN-19402) [DEF concentration is out of range] or DTC-144E / (SPN-5198) [DEF quality
sensor internal failure (Concentration value is higher than expected)] or DTC-254E / (SPN-9550) [DEF quality
sensor internal failure (Concentration value is lower than expected)] is present, resolve the relevant fault. Then
determine if fault DTC-2DDA / (SPN-11738) [SCR catalyst efficiency lower than first NOx production threshold
level] is also resolved.

B. If neither DTC-4BCA / (SPN-19402) [DEF concentration is out of range] nor DTC-144E / (SPN-5198) [DEF
quality sensor internal failure (Concentration value is higher than expected)] nor DTC-254E / (SPN-9550) [DEF
quality sensor internal failure (Concentration value is lower than expected)] is present, continue with Step 5.
5. Check the DEF level and the DEF mixture concentration.

Visually determine that the DEF quality sensor is fully immersed in DEF.

Use a refractometer to determine the concentration level of the DEF mixture.

There should be 28.75 - 36.25 % mixture concentration.

A. If there is an insufficient level of DEF to adequately cover the DEF quality sensor or if the DEF mixture
concentration is not between 28.75 - 36.25 %, drain the DEF tank. Then remove, inspect and clean, if necessary,
the DEF quality sensor to assure the DEF quality sensor cover holes are free of debris. Then fill the DEF tank
with properly concentrated DEF mixture.

B. If there is a sufficient level of DEF to adequately cover the DEF quality sensor and the DEF mixture concentration
is between 28.75 - 36.25 %, use the PT-Box tool to perform a UDST. Record your findings.

6. Check DEF system for pressure, leaks and quantity.

Remove the dosing module.

Orient the dosing module and a piece of cardboard to a location that would allow capture of a produced spray
pattern.

Use the PT-Box tool and follow the on-screen instructions to perform a Urea Dosing System Test (UDST).

During the UDST record DEF system pressure and capture the injection pattern on the cardboard. Also, visually

check for any DEF system leakage.

There should be 9.00 - 11.00 bar (130.50 - 159.50 psi) before injection, a uniform spray pattern, and no leakage.

While the injector is removed, perform a UDLC and a UDVC.

A. If the pressure is out of specification, the pattern is not uniform, or leakage is seen, clean, repair or replace
system components, as required.
B. If the pressure is within specification, the spray pattern is uniform, and leakage is not seen, do not install the
dosing module and continue with Step 7.

New DOC mixing chamber DOC mixing chamber is 50% plugged with DEF crystallization

Visually inspect the DOC and exhaust gas mixing chamber, through the dosing module mounting hole, for large deposits or
damage. Also inspect the inlet of the DOC in case of engine or turbo failure, look for any contamination.

A. If large deposits or damage is discovered, clean, repair or replace the DOC assembly, as required.

B. If large deposits or damage is not discovered, install the dosing module and continue with Step 9.
9. Replace the SCR downstream and upstream NOx sensors.

Then check to see if fault DTC-2DDA / (SPN-11738) [SCR catalyst efficiency lower than first NOx production
threshold level] is resolved.

A. If the fault has been resolved, use the PT-Box tool to perform the Inducement Unlock / Counter Reset. Then
return the machine to service.

Info: Torque limitation active
Module: ECU
Context:
The Engine Control Unit (ECU) monitors the emissions control system functionality and efficiency. When a technical
fault occurs that may affect either the functionality or the efficiency of the emissions control system the ECU will
impose a performance limitation in compliance with OBD legislation.

Cause:
A technical fault related to the emissions control system has been detected causing a torque limitation.

Solution:

1. This fault code is for information only. There is an active performance limitation due to OBD legislation. This
fault was caused by an emissions relevant technical fault. Check the vehicle display for any other emissions
relevant faults. The vehicle control module (VCM) alarm log should be saved and checked for any codes relevant
to the technical fault that has occurred.

A. If any other emissions relevant fault codes are present, (active or inactive) then address these codes first
before repeating Step 1.

B. If no other emissions relevant fault codes are present and active then heal the code by completing x2
driving cycles as detailed below.

C. With the key OFF wait 90 seconds, turn the key to ON and then START the engine. Run the engine for 10
seconds then turn the key to OFF. Complete x2 of these cycles to heal the code.
