 WHAT IS DATA ANALYSIS? AN INTRODUCTION.

decisions."

Watson, "It is a ...”) Insensibly one begins to twist facts to suit theories, instead of theories to suit facts," Sherlock
Holmes’ proclaims in Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's A Scandal in Bohemia.

This idea lies at the root of data analysis. When we can extract meaning from data, it empowers us to make better
decisions. And we’re living in a time when we have more data than ever at our fingertips.

Companies are widening up to the benefits of leveraging data. Data analysis can help a bank to personalize customer
interactions, a health care system to predict future health needs, or an entertainment company to create the next big
streaming hit.

Data set 1 – Amazon Sales Dataset | Kaggle

Data Analysis –

The dataset analyses about the total sales made during discounts.
During the time of Black Friday, there were people who are in need for
buying things, and amazon is the most popular medium in the U.S for
online shopping of their favorite Items.

Amazon pulled of their Strategy, and we could see that the most sales,
were from the range of 50-60%, meanwhile 40-50% is seen to be the 2nd
most selling points.

Some products even had 75-90% discount, however one must note that
they products below 10$. 5

Data Analysis –

New York, California, and Texas, made the most sales in the entire
country. These states are among the top 5 populous states in the U.S.
In the Dashboard, we can see that there are 5 types of products being
sold, which are Men’s apparel, men’s athletic footwear, Men’s athletic
street footwear, Women’s apparel, Women’s athletic footwear, Women’s
athletic street footwear.

Men’s street wear has made the most revenue for the company,
meanwhile Women’s athletic wear made the least revenue

Data Analysis –

The Regions in the U.S are divided into four, as seen in the diagram below.

On Average, most sales have been done in the South regions of the United States, which also included Florida.
The most sales have been made in New York, California, and Texas, which is the among the top 5 most populated
states in the U.S.
Most of the shipments have been made in Standard class shipping, which may take up to one week of time for

the deliveries to reach the consumers. In the Western Region, most First Deliveries were made, which were
delivered just within 1-2 hours.

Data Analysis –

This data set represents three types of data, starting with the items having the most sales, moving on to the hour of the day
which has the highest sales and lastly sales on a weekday versus sales on a weekend. This data is of a bakery named “
THE BREADBASKET” situated in Edinburgh.

In this dataset, we can see that this bakery is selling a total of 28 items ranging from eatables to beverages and few
separate items for the kids menu as well as apparel (t shirt). We can observe that beverages such as coffee and the second
highest sale of bread which acts complementary to the coffee. Furthermore, as expected we can see items such as separate
condiments like honey and apparel like t shirts.
Moving on, we can see that sales during the afternoon which can also be referred as the lunch time has the highest sale
since at this time all the working employees usually have a break and schools get over too. The second highest sales occur
in the morning since a lot of people who are employed don’t have the time to eat breakfast at home they prefer to buy it
and take it on the go. Evening has the least sale since no one prefers to go to a bakery during the dinner time but still the
sales are of a fair amount due to the minimal items on their menu.

Furthermore, we can also see that the sales on weekdays are more as compared to weekends since bakeries are usually
occupied by workaholics and are visited by regular workers on the same exact time and it is low on weekends since
people usually explore on holidays.

Data Analysis –

This data set analyses about the Video games that has been Sold, in around the world. Every year companies release many
video games, and the officials and critics review them and give them a rating. Usually, it is said that the one’s with the
highest scores will be bought immediately by the consumers. Gaming companies release the games in different platforms.
The games with the highest Critics are played in the Xbox 360, due to its kinetic motion tracking sensor. PlayStation 2 is
significantly less than the Xbox 360, due to its non-innovative use of gaming and still using the same form of input for
playing a certain game. But Platform where are games are played is just little, as the game itself should be very engaging
and exceptional. The Game with the 3 highest Critic Score happens to be sports games.

There is a timeless relation between boys and sports. These games make them feel as if they are playing the big leagues.
The next thing that matters for a video game manufacturer is the sales of their games, and in the U.S, two of the top three
games, happen to be the top two games with the highest rating. Sales speaks out for itself.

Meanwhile, in the rest of the world, Wii sports had the most sales.
