Activity: China, Japan, Indonesia, and Thailand Theater Arts

Option: Video Clips Presentation and Group Reporting:
Hello! You are going to watch China’s Peking Opera, Japan’s Kabuki, Indonesia’s
Wayang Kulit and Thailand’s Nang Puppet show. While you are watching the videos
you will be given guide questions to answer. You may answer this individually or in
groups. Refer to linkages on the reference page if the CD is not available.
1. Tell something about the Chinese Peking Opera. Describe the make-up and
movements done in the play.
Make up: It starts with a layer of white oil-based makeup, which is followed by peach-
red rouge from the eyebrows down to the eyes and cheeks, thick black lines around the
eyes and eyebrows, and then coloured lipstick to draw attention to the lips
Movements: Peking Opera, also known as Beijing Opera, is a traditional form of
theatrical art from China that combines music, vocal performance, pantomime, dance,
and acrobatics.
2. Write some spectacular things that you see on the stage of Japan’s Kabuki play?
How did the costumes in the play make it more interesting to watch?
It becomes clear that the entire cast is male throughout the play. It implies that only men
should fill all of the roles. However, you might not notice that right away while watching
the play. Exaggeration is a hallmark of Japanese theatre or Kabuki plays. When I say
exaggeration, it means exaggerated costumes, makeups, and they even wear hilarious
wigs. It's more entertaining to watch because even their actions are exaggerated.
3. Describe how the Wayang Kulit puppets are performed in the play. How did the stage
set up, sounds, and lights affect the show?
The audience is captivated by Wayang Kulit, an Indonesian form of shadow puppetry,
thanks to its captivating plots and expert puppeteering. To help the viewer distinguish
between the various characters, the puppets, which are made of buffalo hide, are
painstakingly detailed down to the smallest aspect of costume and colour. The dhalang
uses gesture and deft hands to tell stories about kings, princesses, ogres, and knights.
Although cotton sheets and oil lamps were once used in traditional productions to create
the light show, these days electric bulbs or other light sources are used instead.
4. Compare Thailand’s Nang (shadow puppet show) to Indonesian’s Wayang Kulit
using the chart below.

Guide Questions:
1. What are things that amaze you in the Spring festival of China? Write your
impressions.
- One of the biggest festivals in China, the Lantern Festival celebrates the first full moon
of the lunar calendar and takes place at the end of Chinese New Year. The festival is all
about forgiveness and sharing love between friends and family. The Chinese New Year,
or Spring Festival, is the most important holiday in Mainland China and is also
celebrated by millions of ethnic Chinese around the world.

2. Describe the music and movements of the drummers of Japan’s Taiko Drum festival.
- In many taiko styles (including Tamashii's), movement is just as important as rhythm,
so in our view, taiko can be thought of as 50% dance and 50% music. Taiko movements
also tend to be hard and fast, and generally very tiring.
3. What were the facial expressions, body movements, and costumes of the Bali
dancers?
- Balinese dance could be very complex. The dancer has a view to exercize all of her
body's components from head-to-toe.The most essential aspect the dancer desires is to
consider that he/she has to constantly bend her knees, her back, and continues her
shoulders wide open.
4. What is the function of the Loy Krathong (sky lantern) festival?

- The purpose of Loy Krathong is to seek forgiveness from the Goddess of Water, so
we shouldn't stop doing it. We'd better reduce waste and use krathong made from
natural biodegradable materials. In Ayutthaya, people use krathong made of fish food
and bread. Ice krathong are fine because they are biodegradable too
