Firstly, people’s obsession to material things are one the ways that can be seen as
excessive consumerism. The addiction to acquisition has become a norm in society as they buy
these items often so as to keep up with trends and constantly looking up to upgrade the upgrade
the quality of products and services. For example, my sister who woke up early at 6.00am and
desperately went to Apple stores to get the Apple’s latest product of iPhone7 as it was launched
in Malaysia. Although, she had already her own iPhone6 but she insisted to buy the latest
production. Not only my sister but lot of people are in line to get their hands on Apple products
as they like material things. The need to have the newest product was higher than the fact of
having to be in line for hours. Hence, obsession on material things can create a pathway to
excessive consumerism.

Besides that, advertising could also lead to excessive consumerism. This is because the
primary function of advertising is to stimulate consumers’ interest or attention in buying the
products or services. Advertisement can also create a feeling of desire as people tend to forget
with what they already have and make them want more. For example, companies put up
strategies in advertising stories about new gadgets, new clothes, makeovers and many other
things, all suggesting that having these products or services will bring more enjoyment and
freedom in life. This kind of marketing may not promote an item directly but will help to create
desire and needs into the consumer’s mind. Hence, advertising is a kind of marketing that can
manipulate people into purchasing an amount of goods that are quite unnecessary which then
leads to excessive consumerism.

Drowning in debt can also be seen as excessive consumerism.
