Parenting style and social anxiety among adolescents
PINKI MISHR AND U.V. KIRAN
Aim of the paper
The purpose of this study was to establish parenting style and examine its impact on teenage
social anxiety.

Introduction-
Adolescence brings about a quick shift in one's role in the family. Young children have a strong
desire to establish themselves, yet they are unable to exert much influence on family decisions
until early adolescence. The sample of the study involved 120 adolescents (boys=60, girls=60)
between the age range of 13 and 18 years. The adolescents were assessed using children's social
anxiety inventory whereas parents were administered parenting style questionnaires.

Variables-
Social anxiety- Social anxiety is a psychological illness that occurs when a person is afraid of
giving an embarrassing impression, and it affects more girls than boys in male-dominated
settings. Females experience social anxiety as a result of how they are regarded and appraised by
others.
Parenting style- Parents-adolescent conflict is also on the rise as friends have a stronger
influence on one another, introducing new influences on the adolescent that may be at odds with
parental ideals. Adolescent and parent conflict has become more common as a result of social
media.
Adolescents- The aim of the teenager is to gain independence while maintaining a caring
relationship with his or her parents (Rawlins, 1992). When children reach puberty, there is
usually an increase in parent-child conflict and a weakening of the family relationship.

Result-
According to the findings, social anxiety has a negative relationship with parenting style.
Agreeableness and openness were found to have a favourable relationship with social anxiety. In
the case of permissive parenting, social anxiety was adversely associated. Permissive and
assertive parenting styles, on the other hand, both predict social anxiety in adolescents.

My perspective on the research-

Social anxiety is variable but in my opinion peer pressure can also be taken into account because
adolescence being a crucial era, they are mostly influenced by friends they spend their time with.
Parents say you should not be with this friend he/she may be a bad influence but we tend to argue
with them. The researcher did explain the research , key words and the main motive of the
research in a very contented way which was easy to grasp. Taking in consideration the indian
scenario, the result was very much relatable . That is the most important time to establish an
understanding parenting study rather than an authoritarian one in my perspective. The sample
size of 120 is small to generalise the population of india.
