Factors Affecting Parents:Child Comparison

CHAPTER1(Research chapter)

this chapter presents the introduction ,back ground of the study, objective, theoretical

framework,conceptual framework,statement of the study,hyphothesis,scope and
limitation, significant of the study, and definition of terms that we used.

A.INTRO

How a days most of the teenager experience emotional distress (in the form of
depression and stress). It is common and getting worse teenager with mental health
problems typically do not seek therapy. Although it is not a new phenomenon, the
Philippines has made little headway in encouraging youth to access mental health
services.

According to World Health Organization Stress can be

defined as any type of change that cause physical, emotional or psychological strain.
Stress is your body's response to anything that requires attention or action. Everyone
experiences stress to some degree. everyone can feel sad or overwhelm at times. But
depression is a chronic feeling of emptiness, sadness, or inability to feel pleasure that
may appear to happen for no clear reason. It is distinct from brief and other emotions a
person may feel following life events.

The most common cause of mental problems in students is that they are constantly
comparing their parents to other kids or children. If they always compare, they may push
themselves beyond their limit and end up getting sick, or they may not even be satisfied
with themselves. Comparing also produces trauma. For example, if a student gets a low
score on an exam or quiz, she or he will be scared to tell their parents the truth and end
up telling a lie.
The effect of comparing is telling lies cause they don't want their parents not being
satisfied with their actions, smoking cause of the pressure that there suffering, and also
drinking at a young age. They maybe get is an early relationship because they do not feel
love or not feel special and also they want to talk so that they can say all of their
problems. The last and most brutal effect is suicide cause of the pressure that they
received plus the stress and depression they got in their life.

The problem with parents is that instead of asking their

children if they're okay or observing if they need help, they do things like scold them,
bring back the past when they do something wrong, and comparing them to another kid
nonstop. Why do you think parents always compare us to others and only see the worst in
us? maybe because of their generation or their desire to motivate us to be the best at
those things, and they know that we can do more, but they did not know that they would
pressure us too much and end up with stress and depression. As a result, comparing is
not a motivating factor.

B.BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY:

According to the "reverse social comparison" written by Richard B. Felson process,

people judge the performance of others on the basis of comparisons with their own
performance. The more successful they are, the more harsh their judgment. We
examined this process using data involving appraisals of academic performance by
fourth-through eighth-grade children and by their parents. The evidence suggests that
successful parents tend to make more negative appraisals of their children's performance
in middle school. These appraisals then affect children's self- appraisals through a
reflected appraisal process. Whereas mothers' appraisals have substantial effects on the
children's self-appraisals in elementary school, fathers' appraisals have strong effects in
middle school. Children's test scores also have negative effects on the appraisals by
middle-school children and by their parents, reflecting temporal comparison.

According to our research (BY :RICHARD B. FELSON), teenagers frequently struggle

with this issue as they compare themselves to others and their parents. although
comparing a child's growth to that can be problematic. when parents start to compete.
Too many times, concerned parents mistakenly believe that a child's early development
is an indication of their intelligence or their successful parenting. The more they
compared, the more pressure they felt and the better their performance, but there were
negative consequences such as stress, depression, and trauma, according to our findings.
C. OBJECTIVE

The objective of this study is to let parents know that their children are suffering from
stress and depression and may have lost the courage to open up with them. Furthermore,
we hope that this study will assist parents in recognizing that their children have
limitations and they do their best in any way’s, and we want the parents to be aware that
comparing is not a motivation because sometimes comparing produces depression and
trauma that result in suicide, early-age drinkers and smokers, etc. The primary goal of
this research is to rebuild the relationship and trust that existed in the past and has now
been broken between parents and children.

D. THEORETICAL FRAMEWORK

The study of parents comparing their children to others is

supported by the social comparison theory proposed by Lean
Festinger in 1954. The theoretical principle is how
individuals evaluate their own opinions and abilities by
comparing themselves to others to reduce uncertainty in these domains and learn how to
define themselves. This theory is related to our study because other people comparing
themselves to other because of others' opinions.

F.STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

The purpose of this study was to examine weather and now parents compare their
children to others it roughs to answer the following questions

1.What is the profile of the respondents in terms of:

1.1.age

1.2.gender

2.Result to the child:

2.1.Adds to stress

2.2.self esteem

2.3.Suppress talents

2.4.Distance from parents

3.Why parents constantly compare their children to others?

4.what you need to do to stop your parents to compare you to others?

G.HYPHOTHESIS

Research Question:
is there significant factor affecting the parents to constantly compare their child to
others?

Hypothesis Null H0:

There are no significant factors affecting the parents' tendency to constantly compare
their children to others.
H.SCOPE AND LIMITION

This study will focus on parents comparing their child to others. the primary subject of
this research is the parent who always compare their child to other.the respondent is
randomly selected. In this study we do the inretview in brgy San Benito Victoria Laguna,
this study is start in NOV 2 2022 end on JANUARY 2 2022.

I.SIGNIFICANT OF THE STUDY

The study will benefit the following:

Parents- the relationship to their child maybe build up .

Teenagers- their confidence maybe build up and the pressure that their suffering will be
end.

Family-the trust will be build up in any aspect.

Future researchers- the researchers rely on the ideas when doing related research and can
do further improvement on the research.

J.DEFINITION OF TERMS

To gain better understanding of this research, the following terms are defined in this
research:

Appraisals:an opinion of the value of a property at a given point in time

Comparing:finding similarities between two or more subjects or objects.

Depression:a persistently lowered mood or loss of interest in activities

Phenomenon:a phenomenon is a remarkable development, just like all superheroes are

phenomena in themselves.

Principle:participants privacy and confidentiality are protected, while the

author(s)’intellectual property is protected and sientific knowledge
is accurate.
Significant:the impact of the study on a research field

CHAPTER 2 (RRL)

this chapter presents different Related Research Literature three(3) foreign studies ,and
three(3) local studies.

A. Foreign Study

More work is needed, however, to examine the role of parents’ expectations and
comparisons in relation with other outcomes that are important to adolescent-aged youth.
Problem behavior is particularly important because it increases in frequency through
adolescence and is linked with future development (Henry et al. 2012.)

Because It's not helpful. Comparing your child to other children is not going to
make them better. I repeat, COMPARING DOES NOT MAKE YOUR CHILD
BETTER. Instead it promotes competitive nature in the more aggressive children
and your child will not be happy with what they have but constantly compare their
life and themselves to others.

The purpose of this study was to examine whether and how parents’ comparisons of their
two children’s conduct predicted youth’s problem behavior over a three-year period.
Adolescent-aged youth were studied because problem behavior increases during this
period and has important developmental implications (Henry et al. 2012).

Sometimes, the sole motivation of comparing your child to others is to instigate a

competitive spirit in the child, so that this feeling can push the child to perform to
the best of their capabilities and excel. Competitiveness definitely is a driving force
towards performance.

Although less commonly studied, age spacing also marks similarity. Close-in-age
adolescent-aged siblings may be more similar, such as attending the same school and
sharing a peer group, whereas siblings who are farther apart in age have less in common.
Beyond similarity, past research on parents’ differential treatment also provides some
evidence of birth order effects: Social comparisons may be more salient for younger
siblings who are striving to achieve competencies that their older siblings, given their
more advanced development, have already achieved (Jensen et al. 2015; Litt et al. 2015).

Sometimes, the sole motivation of comparing your child to others is to instigate a

competitive spirit in the child, so that this feeling can push the child to perform to
the best of their capabilities and excel. Competitiveness definitely is a driving force
towards performance.
B.Local Study

According to the Results of a Philippines' 2022 report card on children's and adolescents'
physical activity Background/Objective Physical activity and other related behaviors, and the
various factors and settings that influence these behaviors, as completely assessed in the
2022 Philippine Report Card on Physical Activity for Children and Adolescents. It serves as
an advocacy tool to increase awareness of the situation of physical activity among
adolescents and kids in the country. Methods A team of 25 sports and physical activity
specialists identified and reviewed the best available nationally representative data related to
physical activity indicators of following a systematic process provided by the Active Healthy
Kids Global Alliance. Results Five (5) indicators were awarded marks since there was
enough data to go there: Overall Physical Activity(F),Active Transpormation(Cagas

these studies and our study became connected because it is about physical and related
behavior.

This article provides a systematic review of the peer-reviewed review and might be assist
reader to better understand the dimensions, characteristics, phenomenon, and policy
responses to child maltreatment in the Philippines. This review provides a summary and
analysis of the core child maltreatment issues in the Philippines and examines child
protection policy responses. It takes a systematic approach, identifying 31 peer-reviewed
articles from a range of main objective had been to memorize that met its criteria and
subjected it to a quality validation tool. Its findings provide important evidence about child
maltreatment and child protection rules in the Philippines. It recommends greater research
into programmatic and policy approaches to child maltreatment, in provides in the form to
going to pay attention to the social, cultural, and structural aspects that contribute to child
maltreatment..(Steven Roche.2017)

This study is connected to our study because there are many different types of
comparisons to children they can be beaten while being told to compare to other
children.
parental involvement and children' educational and social performance: try to compare

can have a serious influence on his\her children's academic achievement, according
researchers. There hasn't been much research done on this connection in developing
countries. This study investigates the nature of parental participation and how it influences
the academic success of primary pupils using data from two surveys of parents, one sample
from the Philippines and one sample from the United States. Direct parents involvement, –
for input helping with homework, could be already found to enhance children's school
performance. Indirect forms of involvement, for volunteering at their children' schools, are
associated with higher grade performance among Filipino parents.(Sampson Lee Blair.2014)

This study is connected to our study because parents have many differences in how
they compare their children with others and how they discipline them.
CHAPTER-3(METHODOLOGY IN RESEARCH)
this chapter presents what method/s we use ,the instrument/s we use in our study, the
profile of our participants, and stat/data treatment we use in our study.

A. Method/s

For this study, we used quail to collect information.According to the University of Texas
at Arlington, qualitative research is a naturalistic inquiry process that seeks an in-depth
understanding of social phenomena in their natural setting. It focuses on the "why" of
social phenomena rather than the "what," and it is based on the direct experiences of
humans as meaning-making agents in their daily lives. Rather than relying on logical and
statistical procedures to study human phenomena, qualitative researchers employ a
variety of inquiry methods such as biography, case study, historical analysis, discourse
analysis, ethnography, grounded theory, and phenomenology.

B. Instrument/s

In our study we use interview as our instrument. according to Tegan George, An

interview is a qualitative research method that relies on asking questions to collect data.
Interviews involve two or more people, one of whom is the interviewer asking the
questions. There are several types of interviews, often differentiated by their level of
structure.

C. Participants

All participants in this study are from Brgy. San Benito, Victoria, and Laguna. We have
five (5) respondents. The first respondent is a female, 63 years old, from Purok 3 Brgy.
San Benito Victoria Laguna, the 2nd respondent, is a 33 year old female from Purok 1
Brgy. San Benito Victoria Laguna, the 3rd respondent, is a female, 62 years old, from
Purok 4 Brgy. San Benito Victoria Laguna, the 4th respondent, is a male, 49 years old,
from Purok 2 Brgy. San Benito Victoria Laguna, the last and 5th respondent, is a female,
42 years old, from Purok 2 Brgy. San Benito, Victoria, and Laguna.

D. Stat/ data/data treatment

tools use interpretation: transcription.according to international rescue transcription is the
action of providing a written account of spoken words. In qualitative research, transcription
is conducted in individual or group interviews and generally written verbatim (exactly word-
for-word). Transcribing may appear to be a straightforward technical task.we transcripted all
of the answer and interpreted it through tables , and the tables can be see in chapter 4.
CHAPTER4(PRESENTATION,ANALYSIS
AND,INTERPRETATION OF DATA)
this chapter presents the answers ,questions, and the chart that we use in our study.

Q#1: What is the main reason you compare your child to other or their
siblings?

Answer:
Participant #1:" I compare him/her to my other child or other kids because my child is
kind, but its defense to another kid sum of them are not good, and if they don't have the

than others; however, 60% of our respondents stated that they compare their child
to others because they want their child to be successful and improve their ability.
Q#2:what do you think is the result to your child whenever you compare them to others,
or their feel whenever you compare them to others?

Answer:

Participant #1: "For me, when I compare my child to others, when they know that I have

Participant #3:"The out come of my discipline to them is that for me, it is right because
they have finished all their studies, they have their own job and then they can handle
their self even without their parents."( the point of the third statement she said that the
out come for her comparing is right cuz all of her child is already successful.)

Participant #4:" I think the result to my child whenever I compare him to others is he

Q#3: What do you want your child to do to stop you from comparing them to others?

Answer:

Participant #1: "They should fix their habits so I can't compare them anymore." (The
point of the first statement is that she wants her child to stop their bad habit .)

Participant #2: "They just need to listen to me." (The point of the second statement is
that she wants her child to listen to them.)

Participant #3: "Be themselves so they don't compare themselves to others." (The point
of the third statement is that I don't want you to be the best; I just want you to be you.)

Participant #4: "Do his best and follow our advice." (The point of the fourth statement is
to do their best and just listen to our advice.)

Participant #5: "Study hard so he won't be compared to others and work hard at home so

In response to this question, 40% said that they will stop comparing their child to
others if they see that their child does their best or works hard in any aspect.
However,20% said that she just needed to listen to them. And 20% they just needed
to change their bad habits or attitudes. However,20% respondents stated that she
simply wants her child to be themselves.
CHAPTER 5( SUMMARY OF FINDINGS,
CONCLUSION ,AND RECOMMENDATION)

this chapter presents the summary and conclusion derived in the conduct of the study
which is to probe the factors affecting parents to compare their child to others. it also
provides recommendations that can be pursued by the son or daughter in the family. The
study was conducted at San Benito Victoria Laguna, and the respondents were parents
comparing their children to others. they were selected using interviewing. it employed a
qualitative method.

B.CONCLUSION

We conclude in our study that the main reason why parents compare their child to others
because they want their child to be a responsible and grow up with a good behavior.
In our interview other respondents said that the reason why they compare their child
because of their behavior and ability.

And also you will see in this study.that their have a significant effect whenever you
compare your child to other and also you may see that if you constantly compare them
they feel sad or they be sulky.
And lastly we conclude what is the parents want their child to do, to stop their constantly
comparing them in others, base on our respondents they said that they just want their
child to do their best in any aspect and also their want their child to improve their
ability, whenever their have a one respondent said that she just want them to be them self.

C.RECOMMENDATIONS

this study revealed the factors affecting parents to compare their child to others as an
inquiry based of treating the kids of in motivation. thus the following recommendations
are presented :

(1)since, the factors affecting parents compare their children to others have been known
the answers. we recommend that you focus of the effect of the comparing to the child.

(2)and also we recommend how will prevent the comparison.

(3) and also you can focus to in what result of comparison in mental and physical health.
