4. EXAMINATIONS AND GRADING

4.1 Interim test: Media instructions

Grading and overview of criteria:

One or more assignments will be explained and executed in each tutoring session (tutorial). Every assignment
results in specifically described final results, due for specific deadlines to be found in the description of the
assignments. The description of the assignments include the grading criteria.

The digital media and the hand drawing assignments each make up 50% of the interim test.

Grading principles, extended version

Every tutorial is finished by delivering the pieces of work made during the meeting and the associated
assignment for home study. Every assignment is graded according to the results of the corresponding piece(s)
of work and the corresponding grading criteria. Grades are rounded off to halves (x,5 or x,0). The criteria for
the pieces of work are described during the tutorials. The pieces of work must be included in the student’s
digital Portfolio at the time of the examination moment, and the Portfolio must be uploaded in the online
assignment by the time of the given deadline. Physical pieces of work need to be submitted and physically
delivered in the personal drawing portfolios.

The grade will be rounded to one decimal point (e.g. x,3 or x,8). Failing to show up for a practicum will be
graded as NS (no show). Attending a practicum but not delivering the assignment will result in the grade 0.

Active attendance during the practicums is a condition for grading all assignments.

Extra attention for B-series of the practicum where the digital Portfolio will be introduced: the assignment is
creating and maintaining your own digital Portfolio. The Portfolio is both a showcase of all the results of the
individual home-study assignments of this series, but it also contains the results of series A and two
professional skills assignments. On top of this, the Portfolio shows the results of the project assignments of
7N1X1 BAU Studio 1. The criteria according to which the Portfolio will be graded will be made clear during the
tutorials. Failing to deliver a portfolio of any kind will be graded as NS (no show).

The remaining home-study assignments (given as an extension of the A series of practicums) will be rounded
off with an assignment that will also be appended in the digital Portfolio at the time of the given deadline. The
assignments are graded according to corresponding criteria of each assignment and the grades will be rounded
off to halves (x,5 or x,0). Failing to deliver the assignments will be graded as NS (no show).

4.2 Final test: projects B, A and U

The final test consists of 3 assignments: a B assignment (Building Physics and Services and Structural
Engineering and Design), an A assignment (Architectural Urban Design and Engineering) and a U assignment
(Urban Systems and Real Estate). All the assignments count as 1/3 in the final examination, which forms 70% of
the total grade for the course. Every assignment is graded according to 3 main criteria: Product, Presentation
and Process. These main criteria will be graded with whole or half numbers (x,5 or x,0). The grade for each
individual assignment (B, A or U) is the weighted average (to one decimal point) of the three partial grades,
where Product, Presentation and Process form respectively 50%, 25% and 25% of the total grade.

The criteria used for the assessment are deduced from the learning objectives and they are described further in
the BAU assignments and the corresponding assessment forms and rubrics. The boxes to fill out on the
assessment form show the items taken into account for the partial grades. The boxes are indicative for the
partial grades, seeing that the weighing of the different criteria is not summed up in advance. The three main
criteria will be graded with the accuracy of half a grade.

The student will receive individual written feedback in the form of the filled-out grading form, together with
the corresponding grades. Besides this written feedback, every student has the opportunity of requesting a
feedback meeting with their tutor.

9
TU Eindhoven | Department of the Built Environment | 7N1X0 BAU Studio 1 | 2022-2023 semester A

A retake is allowed for each of the projects B, A and U. The retake consists of an improvement of the work
delivered, and will be preceded by an individual discussion with the teacher, where the needed additional work
is explained. For the procedure of the retake, see below 4.3.

Delivering the products:

This can be found in the assignments, described in section 3 (Assignments).

4.3 Retakes

4.3.1. The three projects B, A and U

After completing all three projects (which together make up the final test) the average grading of these must
be at least 5.0 or higher, and the total weighed average grade of 7N1X0 BAU studio 1 (average grading of
‘Projects’ and ‘Media instructions’ with the ratio of 70% and 30%) should be at least 5.5, and the grades for all
professional skills have to be sufficient, to successfully complete this course.
All these conditions have to be met to pass te course.

If one of the following situations occurs, a retake of one or more of the project assignments is necessary to
pass the course:
• If the grade of the final test Projects is lower than 5.0;
• If the total grade for the course (weighted average of the grades of ‘Projects’ and ‘Media instructions’
with the ratio of 70% and 30%) is lower than 5.5 ;
For each project, only one opportunity for a retake is granted.

If the result of one or more of the professional skills is insufficient, these need to be retaken. For each, only one
opportunity for a retake is granted.

Important to note is that the interim test ‘Media instructions’ cannot be retaken. Please read the dedicated
study guide of this part of 7N1X0 BAU studio 1.

4.3.2. The U-project final report as assessment of PRV31 Writing:

On the final report of the U-project an assessment will be made concerning the professional skill ‘Writing’. This
will result in a summative grading of ‘PRV31 Writing’ in the range: Fail (FA), Passed (PA) and Good (GO).
A retake is obligatory in case the student is graded with a ‘Fail’.

4.3.3. The A-project final presentation as assessment of PRV21 Presenting:

During the final presentation of the A-project an assessment will be made concerning the professional skill
‘Presenting’. This will result in a summative grading of ‘PRV21 Presenting’ in the range: Fail (FA), Passed (PA)
and Good (GO).
A retake is obligatory in case the student is graded with a ‘Fail’.

4.3.4. The group work in the B-project as assessment of PRV11 Cooperation:

The cooperation in the group during the B-project will be assessed concerning the professional skill
‘Cooperation’. This will result in a summative grading of ‘PRV11 Cooperation’ in the range: Fail (FA), Passed (PA)
and Good (GO).
A retake is obligatory in case the student is graded with a ‘Fail’.

When you submit your work under your own name you are asserting ownership of that work. When using
ideas of another person, you must give that person credit through appropriate referencing.
Referencing serves multiple purposes: (i) it allows readers to further explore sources you have consulted, (ii) it
shows the depth of your own thinking and process of inquiry, (iii) it allows you and your readers to compare
and contrast your position with other people's positions, agreeing with some, disagreeing with others, and (iv)
it gives proper credit to the hard work that many people have done before you.
