II. PROJECT PROFILE

1. A. PROJECT TITLE:

Provision of Monocular/Binocular and Birds of the Philippines Book for Maligcong tour guides

2. PROJECT BACKGROUND:

Barangay Maligcong, Bontoc, Mountain Province is situated at approximately 17.1334,

120.9841, in the island of Luzon. Elevation at these coordinates is estimated at 4,403.8 feet
above mean sea level.

It is one among the barangays of the Upland Zone of Bontoc, joining Barangays
Dalican, Guina-ang and Mainit. It is known for its majestic and beautiful rice terraces which
is visited mostly by foreign tourist during the infancy of tourism. Now additional tourist sites
are included such as the Mount Kopapey and Mount Parutan/Fato. In Mount Kopapey,
tourists view the sitios of Favarey, Fangoraw and Favarey including the rice terraces. In
addition, watching the sea of clouds and sunrise are the most activities they experience.
While in Mount Parutan, tourists have a different view of Maligcong as a whole including,
barangays Dalican, Mainit and Guina-ang.

After the pandemic, former tourists who visited Maligcong are asking other tourist site or
activities of the barangay. Hence, tourism office staff asked interested farmers who are
willing to open their farms to tourist as additional site and activity. Positive feedback from
eight farmers who are willing to be included in the farm tourism package of Maligcong.
Furthermore, the tourism office conducted basic photography and bird watching training to
forty (40) tour guides municipal wide in order to train tour guides in bird photography and
bird guiding as additional activity in the barangay. During the training participants are
amazed as to the identified birds in Barangays Maligcong and Bayyo.

The following are the birds sighted during the training:

During the training digiscoping is taught to the tour guides. Digiscoping is using
android phone paired with either a monocular or a binocular in spotting and taking photos of
birds. The minimum requirement for binocular or monocular is the 10× Magnification &
50mm Objective Lens.

Why Digiscoping?
Income in tour guiding especially here in our municipality is minimum, meaning an
active tour guide can earn four thousand (Php 4,000.00) or less in one (1) month. With this
income they cannot afford DSLR for bird watching and bird photography. Hence, it is
suggested for a starter to use digiscoping since every guide has an android phone with high
resolution camera paired to a high resolution binocular or monocular.

While the tour guides are feeling excited to do bird watching, bird photography, bird
identification, this proposal is submitted to your office for funding.
