From phenomenal beaches to notable mountains and seemingly boundless vegetation, the
Philippines is a favorite of many foreign visitors. The 7,107 island of this tropical Southeast Asian country
caters to the abundance of biodiversity it is gifted with by the virtue of its extraordinary environment and
extraordinary people. "It's more fun in the Philippines!", is a phrase summarizing the experience of the many
different people across the globe as they make their way into the country. It is, after all, a 'home' filled with
the welcoming and hospitable culture that Filipino people are known for. Perhaps there will be no such a
thing as 'hiya' or a sense of estrangement by the time someone leaves this country of love. Love, that is
proven by the way Filipinos are family-oriented, religious, hardworking, and generous despite any
circumstances. Love that has rooted in its rich history which molded the culture of the Philippines to be a
combination of traditional, Spanish Catholic, Western, and Asian.

Even so, the Philippines is distinctly different as the many ethnic groups of the country are special
in their own way. This is among the many reasons why it is loved by non-natives no matter their differences.
Moreover, the over 120 languages spoken in the Philippines is a proof of the great diversity it possesses. The
national language of the country that is used in formal education is the noteworthy, "Filipino language" which
is known to many by the virtue of its melodious and meaningful words. Filipino and English are both official
languages of the country in which English is primarily used by the government. Being among the top
English-speaking country in the world also makes it easier for foreigners to travel and explore the beauty of
the country.

A month of visitation will be as though it was a year's worth of learning yet an almost fleeting
experience as time flies with all the fun you may experience in the country. Certainly, there will be no
"goodbyes" and only "see you again soon".

The old saying "The eyes are the window of the soul" encapsulates my experience of having to understand
firsthand that culture prevails in the littlest of sense and it varies greatly in existence. It is a Filipino upbringing to lower
your head and not meet the eyes of your elder as a sign of respect. Naturally, it had become a habit of mine that I
sometimes wonder whether it was simply due to this upbringing that I am unable to look directly into people's eyes or I,
myself, am at fault as I find it truly uncomfortable. My family and I traveled to a well-known beach resort near our
province. It was truly worthy of its prominence as it may be said that the pictures did not do it justice. The tourist spot
was filled with both foreigners and locals. As my cousins and I were strolling around, a foreigner approached us and
asked if we could take their pictures. They tapped my shoulder instead of having to 'pssst' to call our attention which
was almost a custom in the Philippines. Moreover, the way that they talked to us was surely that of a scene from the
movie. They first introduced themselves before having to ask us to take their photo. It was a combination of self-
consciousness and the culture of keeping your head low that brought about a minor misunderstanding. They thought
that we did not want to take their pictures as we have yet to meet their eyes. They were not mad, per se, however, they
did share with us that the people of this country have been refusing to look at them directly. They further explained that
it made them feel unwelcomed as eye contact is regarded as essential in their culture to show their sincerity. It was then
that I realized that it may really be that not meeting people's eyes when conversing may come off rude to others. We
apologized that we made them feel that way and explained that instead of making them feel unwanted, bowing their
head and not meeting their eyes is a show of respect. They listened attentively as we explained and even apologized for
the misunderstanding. Afterward, we took their photo and they even asked us to take one with them.
The experience was truly enlightening and it broadened my perspective to be considerate of how I should
act in front of people of other cultures. I also looked up what our common gestures mean in other countries. It is
amusing to know how a simple v sign and hand wave may come off as rude to other cultures, more so a simple hand
wave. For a certain, the world is as diverse as its complexity. Consequently, the culture of the billions of people
residing in it is beautifully distinct on their own.
