Clean and Sanitary School Conditions

Dear Brighton High Administration,

These last two years in this new building have been a rollercoaster with kids not caring

about the school, from kids purposely stealing stuff out of the bathrooms, to kids

purposely making messes. Ever since Covid 19, the school has become less clean and

more unsanitary with people becoming less and less cautious of their surroundings and

the messes they are making. School should be a place that students feel safe and

happy to come to but it is hard to feel that way with a dirty school. Brighton high school

isn’t the dirtiest school but we still have a hard time maintaining sanitary and clean

conditions, from garbage being left out for days, to messes never getting cleaned up.

Brighton High School has to do a better job maintaining a clean and sanitary

environment for the students that attend this school. Unsanitary school conditions have

been known to lead to a withdrawal from students and less success from those

students. “Dirty schools increase absenteeism and sickness, reduced morale and

productivity, and lower test scores. “(SSC Services For Education). Clean and sanitary

school conditions don’t only help students feel more comfortable but it also helps them

succeed and do better in school. Brighton high school is a nice new school that

deserves to be treated better and to maintain how nice of a school it is.

The goal of my action plan is to allow a cleaner and more sanitary working environment

for the students and staff of Brighton High School. I have created a three-objective plan

to reach this goal. The first objective is to get an understanding of the areas that

students and staff feel are the dirtiest and most unsanitary which can be done through a

quick Google form and survey at the end of the 2022-2023 school year. With this

information, the school and the janitors will have a better understanding of where they

need to spend more time cleaning.” 50 % of working parents surveyed pack lunch for

their kids because they think the cafeteria is unclean and 1 in 3 respondents won't let

their children ride the bus because of the concerns that it is unsanitary.” (Lynch,

Matthew). The next objective is to start getting the students more involved in

maintaining clean and sanitary school conditions. This can come in many forms such as

paying students to come after school to clean up, having times during the school day

where students have to come together to pick up trash, or just making sure students

pick up after themselves. “The concept of kids cleaning classrooms isn’t exactly a new

one. Back in 2015, a school in Oregon made headlines for carving out 30 minutes a day

after lunch for kids to clean up after themselves. Even though those students worked for

free, teachers said it did have an overwhelmingly positive effect on the school as a

whole. “(Rode, David and Angela Barton). Brighton High School needs to implicate a

system like this where students come together and help clean up. This needs to be

brought to the schedule before the 2023-2024 year. Students are the biggest factor if a

school is clean and dirty and they need to be held accountable.” The struggle to find

enough janitors to keep schools clean. Students need to start cleaning up after

themselves and making sure the classrooms and hallways are clean.” (Rode, David and
Angela Barton). students won’t go out of their way to clean up the school which is why

Brighton High School should start a system to make sure that students clean up.

“Effective cleaning programs in schools enhance school and student positive

self-image, and may promote overall higher academic attendance and

performance.”(Curry, Andi).

For the action plan to work, we need full commitment from everyone at the school

including students and staff. Brighton high school is a lovely new school that deserves

to be kept clean and sanitary and with these changes, we can create an atmosphere

where students thrive.
