Chapter 1: Introduction
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

• Applications of the Derivative identifies was that this concept is used in

everyday life such as determining concavity, curve sketching and optimization.
Topics include: Intervals of Increase and Decrease.

• We use the derivative to determine the maximum and minimum values

of particular functions (e.g. cost, strength, amount of material used in a building,
profit, loss, etc.). Derivatives are met in many engineering and science problems,
especially when modelling the behaviour of moving objects.

• The derivative is defined as something which is based on some

other thing. In Mathematics, Derivative is an expression that gives the rate of
change of a function with respect to an independent variable. Derivatives have
various applications in Mathematics, Science, and Engineering. We’ll learn about
these application of derivatives in the topics below.

• Equation of tangent
• Equation of normal
• Maxima and Minima
• Radius of curvature

Chapter 2: Equation of tangent

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Tangent line (or simply tangent) to a plane curve at a given point is the
straight line that "just touches" the curve at that point. Leibniz defined it as the
line through a pair of infinitely close points on the curve.

Let Line L (Tangent ) passes through point (x,y) having slope m (dy/dx )

Therefore, equation of tangent by slope point form :

y-- y1 = m(x—x1)

where m= slope of tangent = m= (dy/dx)

y—y1 = dy/dx (x—x1)

Chapter 3: Equation of normal

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The normal line is defined as the line perpendicular to the tangent line of the
curve at that point. Knowing this we can evaluate slope of the normal line of this
curve (or in general)

dy
A normal L1 passes through point (x,y) having slope m 1 = (-1/ )
dx

Therefore equation of normal by slope point form

y—y1 = m1 (x—x1 )

dy
where m1 = slope of normal = m1 = (-1/ ( )
dx

dy
y—y1 = (-1/ ) ( x—x1 )
dx

Chapter 4: Maxima And Minima

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

To find maxima and minima by the condition slope of tangent dy/dx = 0

because tangent is parallel to x - axis and slope of x - axis is 0.

steps to find maxima and minima

➢ To find dy/dx of given curve .

➢ Equavate dy/dx = 0
➢ we get x = a and x = b
dy
➢ Again differentiate to find d2y / dx2
dx
➢ As d2y/dx2 at point x = a < 0 than point of maxima at x = a
➢ As d2y/dx2 at point x = b > 0 then point of minima at x = b
➢ m'

Chapter 6 –Applications of derivatives in real life

**Derivatives have various important applications in Mathematics such as:

Rate of Change of a Quantity

Increasing and Decreasing Functions
Tangent and Normal to a Curve
Minimum and Maximum Values
Newton’s Method
Linear Approximation

Rate of Change of a Quantity

This is the general and most important application of derivative. For example,
to check the rate of change of the volume of a cube with respect to its decreasing
sides, we can use the derivative form as dy/dx. Where dy represents the rate of
change of volume of cube and dx represents the change of sides cube

Increasing and Decreasing Functions

To find that a given function is increasing or decreasing or constant, say in a
graph, we use derivatives. If f is a function which is continuous in [p,q] and differential
on the open interval [p,q], then,
f is increasing at [p,q] if f’(x) > 0 for each x ∈ (p,q)
f is decreasing at [p,q] if f’(x) < 0 for each x ∈ (p,q)
f is constant function in [p,q], if f′(x)=0 for each x ∈ (p,q)

Application of Derivatives in Real Life

1. To calculate the profit and loss in business using graphs.
2. To check the temperature variation
3. To determine the speed or distance covered such as miles per hour,
kilometre per hour etc.
4. Derivatives are used to derive many equations in Physics.
5. In the study of Seismology like to find the range of magnitudes of the
earthquake.

6. By solving the application of derivatives problems, the concepts for these

applications will be understood better. Chapter 7 :
