COURSE OUTLINE

COURSE TITLE: BUILDING AND ENHANCING NEW LITERACIES ACROSS THE


CURRICULUM
Course code: PROF ED 10

No.Of Units: 3 Yunit


Course Description: This course introduces the concept of new literacies in the 21 st century as
an evolving social phenomena and shared cultural practices across learning areas. The 21 st
century literacies shall include (a) globalization and multi-cultural literacy, b) social literacy, c)
media literacy, d0 financial literacy, e) cyber literacy/digital literacy, f) eco-literacy and g) arts
and creativity literacy. Field based-interdisciplinary explorations and other teaching strategies
shall be used in this course. Fluency in multi-literacies shall be developed among learners to
cope in today’s fast-changing world.

Number of Hours: 3 hours every week for 18 weeks or 54 hours in a semester

Course Outcomes:

At the end of the course, the students should be able to:

1. Demonstrate contents knowledge and pedagogy of the concept of 21st Century Education, new
literacies, functional literacy and multiliteracy perspectives.

2. Demonstrate the application of new literacies within and across teachers’ education
curriculum.

3. Apply teaching strategies that develop critical and creative thinking and/or higher order
thinking skills.

4. Show skills in the selection, development and use of variety of teaching resources, including
ICT to address learning goals.

5. Demonstrate knowledge of providing timely, accurate and constructive feedback of improve


learners’ performance.

THE 21ST CENTURY EDUCATION

 Education prepares students for life in this world that can make them communicate,
function and create change personaly, socially, economically and politically on local,
national and global levels.
 There is a drastic change brought about by the advent of the 21 st Century education in the
context of the curriculum, classroom, environment, technology, learners and demands of
the job market.
 21st Century Education implies challenges among teachers in the way they need to
embrace technological advancement and instructional innovations.
 With the paradigm shift from 20th Century to 21st Century education, transformation and
transition are taking place.
 To cope with the demands of 21st Century education, educational institution should
address its eight critical attributes (the 21st Century School, the 21st Century Curriculum,
the 21st Century Learning Environent, the 21st Century Learners, the 21st Century Skills
Outcome and the Demands in the Job Market, the 21 st Century Implications, and the 21st
century Teacher.)
 The 21st Century Technology Tools for learning are Affinity Groups, Blogs, E-portfolio,
Hypertext, Podcast, Web 2.0, Myspace, Scecond Life, Semantic Web, Webkinz, Wiki,
Youtube, Google Docs, Prezi, Easybib, Social media platforms [Facebook, Twitter,

Edmodo, Schoology, Instagram, Tambler, etc.], Smartboard, ReadWriteThink.org,
WebQuest Page, and Literacy Web.
 Teachers must be multiliterate, multispecialist, multiskilled, self-directed, lifelong
learners, flexible, creative problem solver, critical thinker, emotionaly and passionate for
excellent teaching.

THE 21ST CENTURY SKILLS CATEGORIES

 The term 21st century skills refer to abroad set of knowledge, skills, work habits, and
character traits that are critically important in today’s world, particularly in colleglate
programs and contemporary careers and workplaces.
 The Partnership for 21st Century Skills encompass a wide-range body of knowledge and
skills that are interconnected with applied skills, cross-curricular skills, cross-diciplinary
skills, intrerdeiciplinary skills, transferable skills, transversal skills, noncognitive skills,
and soft skills.
 To succed in life and their future career, stuidents must hone and empower themselves
with learning and innovation skills, information, media and technology skills, life and
career skills, and social and cross-cultural skills.
 The integration of 21st Century skills must be continuously practiced along standards and
assessment, curriculum and instruction, professional development, and learning
environments.
 Considering the techers are the greatest mobilizers of 21st Century education, therefore,
pre-service teachers must be rigidly trained on these skills to prepare them for their future
professional career roles.
