INTRODUCTION
This compendium of lesson is about to the features of 21 st century teaching and

learning and the critical attributes of 21st Century Education.

In the features of 21st century education teaching and learning it was divided by

the teaching and learning. Under the features of 21 st century teaching it has 7

types: student-centered, integration of technology in the classroom, performance-

based assessment, engaging the 21st century student, interdisciplinary and using a

variety of information to complete authentic projects. Under the features of 21 st

century learning it has 6 types; knowledge-oriented, global citizens, thinking

creatively, thinking critically, communicates and collaborates with other and

digital literacy. Then we have the 8 critical attributes of the 21 st century education

which are the following: integrated and interdisciplinary, technologies and

multimedia, global classrooms, creating/adapting to constant personal and social

change and lifelong learning, student-centered, 21st century skills, project-based

and research driven and relevant, rigorous and real world.

In this compendium includes the activities given all throughout the Midterm and

the slogan in relation with the risk and safety of using the internet.
FEATURES OF 21ST CENTURY TEACHING AND
LEARNING

OBJECTIVES:
At the end of the discussion, the students will;
1. identify what are those features of 21st century teaching and learning and
critical attributes of 21st century education
2. understand each of the features of 21st century teaching and learning, and
3. analyze the different features of 21st century teaching and learning and critical
attributes of 21st century education.

• 21ST Century Education is an upgraded learning for millennials to adapt a well


developing era.
• It contains a collaboration of the current education system and information
technology.
• A 21st century education is about giving students the skills they need to succeed in
this new world,and helping them grow the confidence to practice those skills.
• With so much information readily available to them, 21 st century skills focus more
on making senses of that information, sharing and using it in smart ways.

FEATURES OF 21ST CENTURY TEACHING


1. STUDENT – CENTERED
• Teachers act as facilitators, coaching students as they work on authentic projects.
Students are allowed to make choices of their preferred learning style in order to
motivate them in gaining knowledge.
2. INTEGRATION OF TECHNOLOGY IN THE CLASSROOM
Teachers have students regularly use technology to find information, network/
communicate with each other and experts, and to produce and present their
projects, assignments and performances.
3. PERFORMANCE – BASED ASSESSMENTS
Teachers utilize projects as well as other products and performances as
assessments to determine student achievement and needs. Assessments are
tailored to the talents/needs of the students.
4. ENGAGING THE 21ST CENTURY STUDENT
Teachers consider how to utilize the unique characteristics of the 21 st century
digital native to provide engaging and effective instruction.
5. INTERDISCIPLINARY
Teachers have students complete projects that are designed to use information and
skills that cut across other subject areas. Some projects and assignments may be
done collaboratively between two or more classes.
6. USING A VARIETY OF INFORMATION TO COMPLETE AUTHENTIC
PROJECTS
Teachers devise projects that help students learn information and skills through
using them in situations similar to the way they would in real life.
FEATURES OF 21ST CENTURY LEARNING
1. KNOWLEDGE – ORIENTED
Most basic and important aspect of learning.
Whatever you learn, it must be for the sake of enhancing knowledge.
Therefore, learn for the sake of enriching and acquiring knowledge.
2. GLOBAL CITIZENS
Social media usage and access to the web has made students more aware of their
place in a diverse world.
They are involved in conversations and issues that need to be tackled on a global
scale. For example, health concerns, environmental protection, and economic
growth.
3. THINKING CREATIVELY
Students need to be supported in their ability to develop creative solutions to
everyday problem and engage with the artistic tools at their fingertips.
In the typical classroom, this means moving past techniques of route learning and
rule-following instead of looking towards discovery, analysis and innovation.
4. THINKING CRITICALLY
Students need to have the ability to make connections between arguments and
knowledge sources.
Interpreting this information and drawing intelligent conclusions will allow them
to reflect critically on processes and create better experiences.
5. COMMUNICATES AND COLLABORATES WITH OTHERS
Students access to social media and other communication platforms have primed
them to engaged with people of different opinions, expectations and cultures.
6. DIGITAL LITERACY
The next generation need to be equipped with the skills to navigate the digital
world. Learn about the tech trends to make learning a fun activity. Learning to use
it properly and appropriately should be instill in this new era.

Education in the 21st century is characterized by effective linkages among various
subjects or discipline to enhance student learning experience.
This critical attribute implies that teacher need to review the curriculum and
identify strategies or ways on how different subject can be effective linked to
enhance the learning experience of the student.
2. TECHNOLOGIES AND MULTIMEDIA

This involves the full use of available Information and Communication


Technology or ICT, as well as multimedia to improve teaching and learning
activities. The ability to find , evaluate, utilize and create information using
technologies and multimedia or digital technology in general is referred to as
digital literacy.

This critical attribute implies that your school will need to acquire and use
computers and various multimedia equipment to enhance learning to the best
extent possible. Training is also needed for teacher-users as part of a bigger
“technology plan.”
3. GLOBAL CLASSROOM
Education in the 21st century aims to produce global citizens by exposing student
to the concerns of the region and other countries. They encouraged to react and
respond to issues as part of their roles as global citizen.
This critical attribute implies that teacher need to include current global issues
concerns such as peace and respect for cultural diversity, climate change, and
global warming in classroom discussion.
4. Creating/Adapting to Constant Personal and Social Change and Lifelong
Learning
• 21st Century is an upgraded learning for millenials adopt a well developing
era. It contains a collaboration of the curreñt education system and
information technology.
• Eduaction in the 21st Century subcribes to the belief that learning that’s not end
within four walls of the classroom. Instead, it can take place anywhere, anytime
regardless of age. This means that teachers should facilitate students learning even
beyond academics. Therefore, it should not end with requarements compliance
and passing exams but also for transferring and applying knowledge to a new
context a real-life situation. As such, the curriculum should be planned in such a
way that students will continue to learn even outside the school for life
5. STUDENT-CENTERED LEARNING
Student-centered learning, also known as learner-centered education, broadly
encompasses methods of teaching that shift the focus of instruction from the
teacher to the student.

1. Create a Positive and Supportive Classroom
The first step to creating a healthy student-centered learning environment is
establishing a positive and supportive classroom. This means building a safe and
welcoming space for all students. It is essential that each student feels like they
belong in the classroom and that their voice is heard.
2. Encourage Student Choice and Voice
It is essential to encourage student choice and voice in a student-centered
classroom. This means giving students a say in what they are learning and how
they are learning it. When students have a voice in their education, they are more
likely to be engaged and motivated.
3. Promote Student-Led Learning
It is essential for students to feel like they have some ownership over their
education. When students are involved in the learning process and feel like they
have a say, they are more likely to be engaged. One way to promote student-led
learning is to give students choices. For example, you might ask them to choose
the topic of their next project or which book they want to read for class.
4. Encourage Risk-Taking
In a healthy student-centered learning environment, students feel
comfortable taking risks. With this type of environment, students know that they
can make mistakes without being ridiculed or punished. This healthy risk-taking
will lead to more innovative thinking and problem-solving.
5. Allow for Flexibility
Flexibility is critical in a student-centered classroom. Let your students
dictate the pace and direction of the lesson. This means being open to changes in
lesson plans and willing to improvise when necessary. There will be times when
you need to take control, but try to give students freedom.
6. Respect Each Student’s Uniqueness
A healthy student-centered learning environment is one where each student
feels respected. The teacher understands that every child is different and has
unique needs. This means that the teacher adapts their teaching methods to meet
the needs of each student.
7. Encourage Cooperation, Not Competition
With student-centered learning, the focus is on cooperation, not competition. In
a healthy learning environment, students work together to support and help each
other. This type of environment fosters a sense of community and belonging.
What Are the Benefits of Student-Centered Learning?
1. Increased Engagement
When students are at the center of the learning process, they are more likely to be
engaged. This is because they are more likely to be interested in the material
when actively involved in the learning process.
2. Improved Critical Thinking Skills
With student-centered learning, students are constantly engaged in active
problem-solving. They are encouraged to ask questions and think critically about
the information they learn. As a result, they develop strong critical thinking skills
that they can apply in all areas of their lives.
3. Strong Relationship With the Teacher
The teacher takes on more of a facilitator role in a student-centered classroom.
This allows them to get to know their students better and build stronger
relationships. When students feel comfortable with their teacher, they’re more
likely to take risks and ask questions

Learning should be fun! When students are actively involved in their education,
they’re more likely to develop a love of learning. When students enjoy learning,
they’re more likely to continue learning throughout their lives.

the real world.
6. 21st CENTURY SKILLS
Education in the 21st century promotes skills needed to be productive member of
today society such as creative thinking skills, problem solving and decision
making, and ICT literacy and skills.
Education in the 21st century promotes the skills needed to be productive members
of todays society. As a future teacher you are expected to possess this 21 st century
skills before you can help your students developed these skills.
7. PROJECT BASED AND RESEARCH DRIVEN
 What is Project Based Learning?
Project Based Learning (PBL) is an instructional methodology encouraging
students to learn by applying knowledge and skills through an engaging
experience.

 What is Research Driven learning?


Research-based Teaching means that the learners, teachers and the
curriculum apply research- based approach in the learning- teaching process with
an open outcome.
8. RELEVANT, RIGOROUS AND REAL WORLD
Relevance of 21st century education
• A 21st century education is about giving students the skills they need to succeed
in this new world and helping them grow the confidence to practice those skills.
With so much information readily available to them, 21st century skills focus
more on making sense of that information, sharing and using it in smart ways.
• 21st century skills are tools that can be universally applied to enhance ways of
thinking, learning, working and living in the world. The skills include critical
thinking/reasoning, creativity/creative thinking, problem solving, metacognition,
collaboration, communication and global citizenship.
• Relevance important to learning
Relevance helps students see the value of what they're learning and rigor ensures
they are challenged to develop advanced skills and knowledge. Rigor and
relevance are also important for equity, because they ensure that all students have
access and entry points to high-level content and skills.
• Quality and relevance of education
people are able to get quality education they can break from the cycle of poverty.
Education therefore helps to reduce inequalities and to reach gender equality. It
also empowers people everywhere to live more healthy and sustainable lives.
• What does rigorous mean in education?
The term rigor is widely used by educators to describe instruction, schoolwork,
learning experiences, and educational expectations that are academically,
intellectually, and personally challenging.
• What does rigorous learning look like in your classroom?
Students demonstrate critical thinking skills and the ability to solve problems.
Teachers ask deeper, thought-provoking questions and expect students to answer,
either directly or through another form of communication, such as writing or
sharing with peers.
• What is real World Learning?
Real World Learning is an approach to learning that involves schools working
with community partners and industry experts to engage students in authentic,
relevant problems, projects, and experiences that develop career awareness and
readiness.
• What is the importance of real world experience in student learning?
When students have an opportunity to experience real-world situations, it allows
them to practice the skills they learn about in their books and truly understand the
task at hand.
• Relevant Rigorous and Real World in 21st century education
• Generation Z – born between 1995 and 2009 – most do not remember life without
the internet, and have had technology like smartphones, iPads, smartboards and
other devices available throughout most of their schooling.
• Growing up with this level of technology means growing up with a completely
unprecedented amount of information at your fingertips. There are kids who have
never been more than a few seconds away from the answers to their questions,
with everything just a quick search away. They are able to teach themselves about
any topic they are interested in without even leaving their bedroom. The current
cohort of students come from Generation Z and Generation Alpha. These two
generations have grown up with advanced technology as a given in their homes
and classrooms.
