Lesson: Music of Medieval, Renaissance and Baroque Periods

Objective/s:
1. Discuss the musical elements of the selected vocal and
instrumental music Medieval, Renaissance and Baroque periods.
2. Identify the performance practice based on the characteristics
given on Medieval, Renaissance and Baroque periods.
3. Relate Medieval, Renaissance and Baroque music to the art
forms within the era.
Concept:
The first three period of Western Music History are classified as
Medieval, Renaissance and Baroque. In this activity, you will learn the
characteristics, historical and cultural background of each period.

MUSIC OF THE MEDIEVAL PERIOD (700-1400)


The Medieval period started with the fall of the Western Roman
Empire. It is also known as the Middle ages or “Dark Ages” because it
was a time of brutal cruelty, devastating war and great plagues.
During this time, the Church influenced Europe’s culture and Political
affairs.
One of the dominant musical styles during this period is the
Gregorian Chant, a form of a monophonic plainchant that was named
after Pope Gregory I.
Characteristics of Gregorian Chants:
● Monophonic – Consisting of a single musical line/ without
musical accompaniment.
● Free meter – No regular repeating pattern.

● Modal
● Usually based on Latin liturgy
● Use of Neume notation

During the latter part of the Medieval period, secular music


which was not bound by Catholic traditions emerged. Most of the song
were performed across Europe by group of musicians called
Troubadours.

Characteristics of Troubadour music:


● Usually monophonic
● Sometimes with improvised accompaniment

CLAID
● Tells of chivalry and courtly love
● Originated in France and Written in French language

Adam de la Halle – Also known as Adam le Bossu or Adam the


Hunchback. He was a trouvere, poet and one of the oldest secular
composers. His works are literary and musical works include
chansons and jeux-partis (poetic debate) in the style of trouveres,
polyphonic rondel and motets in the style of early liturgical polyphony.

Music of The Renaissance Period

The term Renaissance comes from the word renaitre which


means “Rebirth,” “Revival,” and “Rediscovery.” This period describes
the Rebirth of the culture and ideas after the Dark ages. The
Renaissance period is a period of “looking back” to the Golden Age of
Greece and Rome.
Renaissance music is also known as the “Golden Age” of a
capella choral music. The invention of printing in the 1400’s paved the
way for a wide distribution of Renaissance composition. With the
emergence of the bourgeois class, renaissance music became popular
as entertainment and activity for amateurs and educated. Lute was
the prominent instrument of this era.

Characteristics of the Renaissance Music:


● Mostly polyphonic
● Imitation among the voices is common
● Use of word painting in texts and music
● Melodic lines move in a flowing manner
● Melodies are easier to perform because these move along a scale
with few large leaps

Mass – is a form of sacred musical composition that sets texts of the
Eucharistic liturgy into music.
● Polyphonic
● May be sung a Cappella or with orchestral accompaniment.
● Text may be syllabic (one note set to each syllable), neumatic (a
few notes set to one syllable), or melismatic (many notes to one
syllable)

Madrigal – is a secular vocal polyphonic composition that originated


from Italy. It was written and expressed in a poetic text and sung
during courtly social gatherings and it is the most important secular

form during the renaissance period.

● Sung a Capella
● Through-composed
● Frequently in 3 to 6 voices

Motet – is a polyphonic choral works in Latin text. It can be used in


any service of the churches and usually in acapella. Sound smoothing
and imitative in nature.

Giovanni Pierluigi da Palestrina – The greatest master of Roman


Catholic church music during the Renaissance period. He was
committed to sacred music and has a keen interest in satisfying the
desires of church leaders. He composed more than 100 mass settings
and over 250 motets

Thomas Morley – the most famous composer of Secular music in his


time. His compositions show variety of color, form and technique.
Most of his Madrigals are light and easy to sing with some aspects of
Italian style.

Music of The Baroque period

The word Baroque is derived from the Portuguese word “Barocco”


which means “Pearl of Irregular Shape.” It is used to describe the
highlighted grandiose and elaborate ornamentation of art from this
period.
The Baroque period was generally a time of newfound ideas.
From major innovations in science to vivid changes in geography,
people were exploring the world around them. The music of the
Baroque Period was just as extreme as the new changes.

Characteristics of Baroque Music:
● Melodies sound elaborate and ornamental.
● Melodies are not easy to sing and remember
● Use of Major and minor tonality
● Primarily contrapuntal textures with some homophony
● Dynamic contrast – alteration between loud and soft
● Orchestra consist of strings and continuo
● Harpsichord and organ are the keyboard instruments that are
commonly used
● New forms: Binary - AB, Ternary - ABC, Ground bass and Fugue

Music Genres:

CLAID
1. Concerto – A form of orchestral music that employs a solo
instrumental accompanied by orchestra.
2. Concerto Grosso – a form of orchestral music wherein the
music is between a small group of solo instruments called
concertino and the whole orchestra called tutti.
3. Fugue – a contrapuntal piece, developed mainly by imitative
counterpoint. It is usually written in 3 or 4 parts with a main
theme called “subject.”
4. Oratorio – a large scale musical composition for orchestra and
voices that incorporates narratives on religious themes.
5. Chorale – musical composition that resemble a harmonized
version of hymnal tunes of the Protestant church during
Baroque period.

Johann Sebastian Bach – one of the greatest composers during


Baroque period. Bach was a religious man, his personal and deep faith
was shown in his sacred music. He was well known for his
compositions for organ, orchestra, and oratorio.

Antonio Vivaldi – A Great Italian Baroque composer, Catholic priest


and a virtuoso violinist. Vivaldi was well-known for giving the strings a
major role in his music, composing instrumental concertos especially
for the violin, as well as sacred choral works and over forty operas.

George Friedrich Handel – became England’s favorite composer and


known for his operas and oratorios
