Review of Related Literature

The literature associated with our research, "Make it PAWssible: A dog shelter website" is
provided below. In conducting a survey different kinds of methods were used by different kinds
of researchers in the Philippines.

1. Household survey on owned Dog population and rabies knowledge in selected municipalities in
Bulacan, Philippines

In this research, our group discovered the two main goals guided the study's design and execution. The
first involved a study of the ecology of dogs and the ownership of dogs, and the second involved a survey
of local knowledge of rabies. Given the rabies control program's advice to use a 1:10 ratio when dog
population figures are unavailable, we anticipated that locating gaps in the population of owned dogs
could lead to more accurate estimates and support future vaccination plans. There is agreement among
previous KAP research that understanding about rabies is generally good, but we expected that
identifying knowledge gaps could serve as a focus for creating future focused education programs.

1.1 Ethics statement

The first method that the researches did was asking for the approval of RITM-IRB. The Research Institute
for Tropical Medicine's Institutional Review Board (RITM-IRB), in the Philippines, granted ethical approval
(IRB protocol number 2019–31). The RITM Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee also gave its
consent (ID number 2019–08). Before the survey, trained staff asked each participant for their signed
informed consent and acquired it.

1.2 Data Collection

Second, A face-to-face survey was carried out between February 4 and February 19, 2020. A
standardized questionnaire that was created based on earlier research on dog ecology and awareness of
rabies was used to interview the participants [7,25]. If the home leader wasn't accessible, their data
collectors asked to speak with any other adults present. This study was conducted using English and
Filipino, two widely utilized languages. They gathered information on the participants' demographics,
their history of animal bites, their awareness of rabies, and their attitudes toward it.

1.3 Data Analysis

Lastly, their Survey data was imported into Microsoft Excel (Redmond, Washington, USA) from the Kobo
Toolbox server and analyzed with Stata Statistical Software, version 15.1. (StataCorp, College Station, TX).
The demographic profiles, KAP, and information regarding owned dogs of the respondents were
calculated using percentages for all relevant factors. Based on the information received from this survey,
the dog:human ratio was used to estimate the number of dogs owned in each barangay. This was
accomplished by dividing the overall dog population by the overall human population calculated by the
survey.

2. Pet adoption over mass-production: A social IMC campaign for PAWS

The Philippine Animal Welfare Society, also known as PAWS, is a non-profit organization that has been
saving and helping abandoned, mistreated, and mistreated animals for more than 50 years. They do this
by providing them with medical care, rehabilitation, love, and affection, but more importantly, by
ensuring that they receive justice for all the pain and suffering they have endured. As reports on animal
abuse and cruelty cases such as the meat trade, dog fights, or simply hurting an animal come in, PAWS
works to put an end. The organization promotes the adoption of street dogs so that there will be a
reduction for the number of dogs being abused.

2.1 Aim of PAWS

This social marketing communication plan's objective is to bring to light the puppy mills—or just
irresponsible breeders—who supply pet stores, online pet merchants, and other retailers of animals. In
essence, the campaign aims to reintroduce and reinforce the notion that adopting an animal from a
shelter is preferable to purchasing one from a pet shop. In contrast to the life of the animals being
repeatedly bred without the essential care in order to make money, this plan aims to enlighten and
educate them about the work the organization does to rehab these abused animals so they can be
adopted.
