2023 Academic Bowl ules


1. The contest will consist of two parts: a two-team contest over history, literature, and science conducted with
buzzers, and a separate math portion.
1.1. In an e ort to keep it fair to all schools, the seeding will be randomly drawn a er the schools arrive on
the morning of the contest.
1.2. Tournament brackets will be updated throughout the day on a master board in the hall or main meeting
room.
2. The history, literature, and science contest will consist of a Double Elimination Bracket. Just as in a basketball
tournament, the losing team will move into the B Bracket, while the winning team will continue in the A
Bracket. In the nal game, a second game will be played between the two teams to determine the champion if it
is the rst loss for the losing team.
2.1. ules:
2.1.1. Each contest will last a timed 10 minutes. Each of the ve members on a team will have a
buzzer control. When the question is asked, the rst team buzzing in will have 10 seconds to
answer the question. If they miss, the second team buzzing in will have a 10-second chance at
the question.
2.1.2. Teams should not buzz in early. If a team buzzes in before the question is completed, the judge
will stop and not nish reading the question. The team that buzzed in early will be given the
opportunity to answer the question. If the team that buzzed in early misses the question, the
judge will read the entire question again, and the team that did not buzz in early will have an
opportunity to answer the question within 10 seconds. The question will not revert back to the
team that originally buzzed in early. The contest will then move on to the next question.
2.1.3. In case of a tie a er 10 minutes in any round, the judge will begin to ask tie-breaker questions.
The 10-second rule will continue. The rst team to score will win.
2.2. Attendance:
2.2.1. Each school will have a team of ve members. If the school brought an alternate, she/he can
witness the contest with the teacher, but not answer. Teams can only make alternate
replacements between rounds, not during a round.
2.2.2. The only people in the room during competition will be the teachers, alternates, and
representatives of UTM Parsons. No other schools will be allowed in the contest room while a
competition is ongoing.
3. The math portion of the contest will be separate from the other quiz bowl.
3.1. The math will consist of 20 questions with 30 minutes in which to take a written test.
3.2. Each school will have a team of two members. The team with the highest average score between those
two students will be the winner.
3.3. Only calculators approved for the ACT Test may be used.
3.4. Calculators must be provided by the contestants.
NO CALCULATORS WILL BE P OVIDED BY UTM.
4. Awards will be given and pictures will be taken at the end of the contest.
4.1. Trophies will issued to winning teams: rst, second, and third overall, and rst in each of the four
categories: History, Literature, Math, and Science.
4.2. Each student will receive a certi cate of participation
4.3. Please do not leave before pictures are taken.
