GAME BASED LEARNING

Title: “Short Story : Quest for the Elements”


Subject: English
Grade Level: Grade 7
Duration: 50 minutes
Objective/s:

a. ) identify and explain the elements of a short story, such as character, plot,
setting, and theme,
b. ) label the parts of a short story (e.g., character, setting, plot) in a given
example or their own writing; and
c. ) appreciate the importance of the elements of a short story to understand
the narrative.

Material/s needed: Four (4) Placards, four (4) small whiteboards, whiteboard
marker, handouts, scoreboard, tokens, prizes, and timer.

Procedure and Setup:(5minutes)


1. Pick 2 short stories from previous lessons or literature that has the
elements of a short story.
2. Prepare question cards with multiple choices related to the story and topic.
3. Prepare an answer key and separate it hidden in your teacher’s table to be
used later.
4. Have the class move their desks into four(4) groups.
5. Place the Scoreboard to show the students their scores.
6. Setup the Prize booth to show the students what they will be competing for.
7. The teacher will then give the students the copy of the stories they will
read.

Game rules and instructions:(10minutes)


1. Begin by Explaining the rules of their “Short Story : Quest for the Elements”
to the students.
2. Divide the class into 4 Guilds or Team. Assign each Guild with a
Banner(Placard) and a color. The students can choose and decide their own
team names.
3. Explain to each guild that their quest is to read the selected stories within
the time limit Fifteen (5) minutes and answers the questions after.

Rules:
1. Raise your Guild’s Banner if you are done answering.
2. Each correct answer will grant the Guild One(1) Token.These tokens
represents points and the guild with the highest points win.
3. No Sharing of Answer to different Guilds.
4. Each question will only be read twice and the students must answer within
30 seconds. Raise their banner if they have answered.
5. After the first place guild has been determined. The three(3) remaining
guilds will have a sudden death round where first to get the wrong answer is
eliminated. And the last to remain wins 2nd Place and so on.

1st place : gets bonus 3 tokens + first pick on the prizes


2nd place : gets bonus 2 tokens + second pick on the prizes
3rd and 4th place gets bonus 1 token each

First pick means they get to pick first before the others pick
and second pick after them and so on.

After the discussion the teacher will now open the Prize booth and let the
students redeem their tokens for prizes.

Gameplay: (20minutes)
1. Setup the chairs in a circle for each Guild and have their banner on hand.
2. After the students have read the stories the teacher will collect the
handouts of the story and begin the question and answer portion.
3. Each guild will be given one(1) whiteboard and marker to write their
answers.
4. The teacher will randomly select a question from his/her question cards to
ask the students. After the students have written their answers they will raise
their guild banner and after all the guilds have answered the Teacher will
reveal the correct answer. The guilds with the correct answer are awarded
one(1) token.
5. The teacher will ask 10 questions in total for the initial game and prepare
another 5 harder questions for the tie-breaker after the 1 st placer has been
determined.

Class discussion or Debriefing: (10minutes)


1. After the game has ended put the chairs back into position
2. Review the answers for each question and discuss
3. Discuss the elements of short story with more detail and examples
4. Encourage the students to share their insights and observations about the
game and the discussion.

Conclusion or Summary: (5minutes)


1. Summarize the importance of learning and understanding of the elements
of a short story.
A. ) Learning the elements of a short story, such as character
development, setting, and plot, helps students understand and follow the
stories more effectively. They can better understand the who, what, where,
when, why, and how of the story, which helps in understanding the story's
overall message and themes.

2. Encourage the students to apply the knowledge they gained by giving them
an assignment to write their own short story.
A. ) Write your own short story with all the elements present to be
presented in the class.
