Spelling Bee Competition KGII – VII

The Spelling Bee is a great opportunity for all students to


 explore and study the English language and its roots;

 learn to spell quickly, accurately and with comprehension;

 to promote knowledge of proper word usage;

 to strive for excellence in spelling skills;

 to meet and compete with their peers in an atmosphere of fun and friendship.

Diary note

Dear Parents,
We are excited to announce that your child ____________ has won the Inter
Class Spelling Bee competition and is now eligible to represent his/her class
in Inter Campus Spelling Bee Competition. Congratulations!!!!
Kindly note the day, date, time and venue.
Day: Friday
Date: 17th Sep‟2021
Venue: DHA Campus
Time (For KGII -I): 8:30 am-12:30 pm
Time (For II-III): 8:30 am-3:00 pm
Note: kindly drop your child in complete uniform along with sanitizer, pencil
case, water bottle and lunch box.
Wearing mask is must.

Participation Criteria
 Participants: grade KGII-VII
 Inter Campus Spelling Bee will be held on Friday 17th Sep. 2021 for class KGII till III
 Inter Campus Spelling Bee will be held on Saturday 18th September 2021for
classes IV till VII
 Campuses with 1-2 sections will select 1 team of 3 participants (3 Students)
 Campuses having 3-4 sections will select 2 teams of 3 participants each (6
students)
 Campuses having 5-6 sections will select 3 teams of 3 participants each (9
students)

Detail of Rounds KGII-III


 This competition will be held in two areas:
o Classroom
o Hall
 There will be 8 rounds in total in respective areas

Classroom Rounds
Three rounds will be conducted in rooms. (1 team per room will qualify for the hall.)
1. Written round
2. Individual round
3. Rapid fire round

Round 1 (Written)

 Over all 15 min will be given for written round


 All teams will participate in round 1
 Three worksheets per team will be given; all participants will solve it individually
 Total marks of team will be calculated after adding numbers of each member
 Work sheet will consist of 3-4 questions
 One question will be unseen.
A) Unscramble words
 10 jumbled up words will be given in Question # 1, students to unscramble the
letters and form word with correct spelling.
 Each correct word will add 1 mark. No deduction.

B) Spell check
 10 Spell check words will be asked .10 seconds per writing 1 word will be given.
 1 mark per correct spelling. No deduction

C) Fill in the missing letter


 spellings with missing letters will be given
 10 words will be given for this part.

Round 2 (Individual)
 2 spellings will be asked from each speller.
 Each team will get 6 words.
 Every correct spelling will add 2 marks.
 No deduction.

Round 3 (Rapid Fire)


 1 min per team will be given.
 Team can attempt maximum words.
 2 marks per correct spelling will be added in team‟s score.
 Any team member can reply
 For a wrong answer negative marking (-1) rule shall be applied

Hall Rounds
Five rounds will be conducted in hall which is as following:

1. Topsy-Turvy Round
2. Buzzer Round
3. WW Round
4. Let‟s Stab Round
5. Challenging Round

Round (1) Topsy-Turvy


 Teacher will show jumbled up spellings of 2 words (one by one).
 15 second per word will be given.
 Students to write correct word using the shown jumbled up letters on the given
paper and then to show and read it.
 Each correct word will add 1 mark and wrong spelling will be given zero.
 No negative marking.

Round (2) Buzzer round


 12 words will be asked in this round. The team which will hit the buzzer first will get
the chance to spell the word.
 Each correct spelling will give 2 marks and wrong spelling will cause -1.
 Words will be asked from the list (already provided).

Round (3) WW round


 Teacher will show five different pictures to each team.
 Students to watch recognize and say the names of the shown pictures.
 15 seconds per picture will be given.
 Each correct word will add 2 marks in score.
 Wrong spelling will cause deduction of 1 mark from the score.

Round (4) Let’s Stab


 Every team will be asked 2 unseen words, spellers will be allowed to discuss and
tell the spelling.
 Every correct spelling will add 5 marks and wrong spelling will give -2 to team.
 Students can pass the question if don‟t know the answer. That will cause no
deduction.
 Unseen words will be grade appropriate and age appropriate.

Round (5) Challenging

 One big word will be pasted on the white board per team.
 Captain of the team will be asked to come and make/ write maximum words
using alphabets of that given word on the board with in 2 min.
 Each 2 words will get 1 mark ,
 3 to 4 word will get 2 marks
 More than 4 letter words will get 3 marks each.

The word given is “basketball”. Students can use these alphabets to make more words
like

Detail of Rounds Class IV till VII


 This competition will be held in two areas:
o Classroom
o Hall
 There will be 8 rounds in total in respective areas

Classroom Rounds
Three rounds will be conducted in rooms. (1 team per room will qualify for the hall.)
1. Quintessential round (written)
2. Minute to win
3. Chopped round (Individual round)
Round 1 (Quintessential)

 Over all 15 min will be given for written round


 All teams will participate in round 1
 Two worksheets per team will be given; all participants will solve it individually
 Total marks of team will be calculated after adding numbers of each member
A) Word Hunt
 Speller will be asked to search 10 words from the given grid and write their spelling
in the given lines.
 Each correct word will add 1 mark. No deduction. E.g.

B) Spelling Challenge
 Spellers will be given 10 sentences with incorrect spellings. Spellers will be asked to
write the correct word in the given lines. E.g.
o We are axsited to announce that you are the winner of the competition.
Answer= Excited____
 1 mark per correct spelling. No deduction

Round 2 (Minute to Win)


 1 min per team will be given.
 Team can attempt maximum words.
 2 marks per correct spelling will be added in team‟s score.
 Any team member can reply
 For a wrong answer negative marking (-1) rule shall be applied

Round 3 (Chopped)
 A themed situation, using words from newspapers and magazines for a “current-
events bee,” from the sports section for a “sports bee,” or from a cookbook for a
“cuisine bee” etc. will be asked
 Each team will get 6 words
 2 spellings will be asked from each speller from the above mentioned theme
 Every correct spelling will add 2 marks
 Every incorrect answer will get -1

Hall Rounds
Five rounds will be conducted in hall which is as following:

1. Knack Round
2. Time Off Round
3. Shalloon Round
4. Chase Round
5. Bidding War Round

Round (1) Knack


 Spellers will see loads of objects pass on a projected screen/flash card in 1 minute
 30 second will be given to recall the objects.
 Spellers to recall and write word using correct spellings on the given paper in the
given time and then to show and read the words aloud.
 Each correct word will add 1 mark and wrong spelling will be given -1.

Round (2) Time Off


 This is a buzzer round
 12 words will be asked in this round.
 The team which will hit the buzzer first will get the chance to spell the word.
 Each correct spelling will give 2 marks and wrong spelling will cause -1.
 Words will be asked from the list (already provided).

Round (3) Shalloon


 The „add a letter‟ round
 Spellers of a team will be given jumbled letters like T, A, E.
 First spellers will have to arrange the letters into a word.
 Second speller will add on more letters and make a new word e.g. MEAT
 Third speller will mix more letters in the existing word and come up with a new
word e.g. MASTER
 This continues for 1 minute until one speller cannot continue.
 Each correct word will add 2 marks in score.
 Wrong spelling will cause deduction of 1 mark from the score.

Round (4) The Chase


 The rhyming round where every team will be given a word like “drive”
 Spellers will be allowed to discuss and give at least 3 rhyming words e.g. thrive,
hive, contrive
 Spellers will pronounce the words as well
 Every correct spelling will add 5 marks and wrong spelling will give -2 to team.
 Students can pass the question if don‟t know the answer. That will cause no
deduction.
 Unseen words will be grade appropriate and age appropriate.
Round (5) Bidding War

 Spellers will be shown flash cards with two different definitions


 Spellers have to guess the one word that will be defining the text
 2 min per team will be given to come up with the correct word and spelling
 Correct identification will get 2 mark
 Negative marking for wrong identification will be applied

Pronouncer’s Responsibility

 The pronouncer announces the word to be spelled.


 She will speak slowly and clearly, without distorting the normal pronunciation of
the word.
 She may also use the word in a sentence or say the word again.
 She will ask the spellers to say the word before spelling it, to make sure they
understand the word. Repeat the word again after spelling it.
 The pronouncer will not entertain root word questions, requests for alternate
definitions or requests for slower pronunciation.
 The pronouncer reads every new word with a break of 30 seconds.

Judges Ownership

 The judges uphold the rules and determine whether or not words are spelled
correctly or vocabulary items are answered correctly.
 The judges participate in the exchange of information between the speller and
pronouncer if they feel that clarification is needed.
 The judges are in complete control of the competition and their decision is final
on all questions.

Prize distribution
 Inter campus Spelling Bee certificates and cups will be given to all.
 Trophy will be given to winning team.
 Gold Medals will be given to 1st position holders.
 Silver medals will be given to 2nd position holders.
 Bronze medals will be given to 3rd position holders.
