SPELLING BEE MECHANICS

[For Grades 4-10 Levels]]


General Rule: Wrong spelling is wrong.
1. Each contestant will be given a word to spell orally.
2. There will be three categories, namely: Easy, Average and Difficult.
3. There shall be no point system/scoring to be applied, but the committee will note the
category of every correct answers.
4. Each contestant will only be given two (2) chances for errors; otherwise, he/she shall
be eliminated.
5. Only the word shall be read by the spelling bee master. On the other hand, each
contestant may ask the following:
a) Meaning of the word
b) Function and Syllabication/pronunciation
c) Etymology/Word Origin
d) Synonym (but not all words may have a synonym)
6. The contestant must listen to the cue: “THE WORD IS ____(the given
word) ,SPELL_____ (the given word)
7. The contestant may ask about the criteria mentioned only twice.
8. Each contestant is expected to answer within and/or after the given time, i.e., 10
seconds for Easy, 15 seconds for Average, and 20 seconds for difficult.
9. If the contestant failed to answer after the given time, buzzer will be heard to signal
that the contestant loses a turn and is considered a point against him/her.
10. After the contestant has spelled the given word, the quiz master will acknowledge
the answer whether “correct” or “incorrect”.
11. As the contestant spells the word, he/she shall be careful to utter every letter of the
word for there is no chance to change the uttered letter.
12. The last three contestants shall again be given a clean slate and will be subjected to
another round but this time only one (1) chance for error.
13. The first to be eliminated will get the 2nd place, the second to be eliminated will get
the 1st place, and the last man standing will be declared the “Spelling Bee Champion”
14. In case 2 finalists got the wrong answer and only 1 spelled the word correctly in a
round, he/she shall automatically be declared ”Champion”.
15. The other 2 contestants will then be competing for 2nd and 1st place.

SPELLING BEE MECHANICS


[For Grades 1-3 Levels)
General Rule: Wrong spelling is wrong.

Specific Rules:
1. There are fifteen(15) words to be given. Words are classified into easy;
average; and difficult.
2. Easy word is equivalent to 1 point; Average word is equivalent to 3 points; and
Difficult word is equivalent to 5 points.
3. The contestants will be given time allotment for each category; 15 seconds for
Easy round; 20 seconds for Average round; and 30 seconds for Difficult round.
4. All words must be written neatly and legibly, and proper use of punctuation
marks and capitalization must be observed.
5. The quiz master will say the words thrice (3x) and will give the definition of
the word for consistency of answers.
6. Wait for the go signal of the quiz master before writing the answer.
7. As the bell rings all spelling boards must be raised for checking.
8. In case of a tie, a clincher word will be given.
9. Winners will be recognized as 2nd placer, 1st placer, and the Champion.
