Multidimensional Fluency Scale (MDFS)
After hearing the student read QRI passages aloud, it felt appropriate to score the student

on their fluency. I used a fluency scale adapted from Zutell & Rasinski and listened to a

recording of the student reading the QRI passage, “People at Work”.

Expression and volume during the reading scored a 2. The student had appropriate voice

volume and displayed some expression while reading. In some parts, the student was able to

make their voice sound natural, but the focus of reading for this student was largely on saying the

words. Phrasing scored a 1. The student was reading more frequently word-by-word and was so

focused on the reading of words that phrase boundaries in their reading was few and far between.

Smoothness of reading scored a 2. While the student had occasional prolonged pauses,

these pauses only occurred in certain spots. These certain rough spots consisted of small

hesitations and time spent decoding words. The student actually scored well in their reading

pace, landing a score of 3. There were mixtures of fast and slow reading. Once the student got

past a difficult portion of text, they were able to read at a more reasonable pace and get some

expression and smoothness in their reading.

When analyzing the fluency scale, I can see how strategies, like echo reading, may

benefit this student. I the student is able to read words better after approaching them once,

repeated readings may help the student to increase their vocabulary and improve their overall

fluency.
