Abstract
The Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) is an integrated solution for
urban/state/private road transport organizations. It consists of a backend and hardware
component to provide an integrated solution for the driver console unit, electronic
ticking machine passenger information system, and vehicle tracking system. It provides
a single solution for transport companies to schedule and monitor buses with the help of
advanced technologies such as GPS, Wi-Fi and GPRS. This paper discusses the impact
and various application fields of ITS for road transportation, as well as the
implementation of various transportation technologies that will be vital for homeland
security, vehicular surveillance, and technologies that can make our ride more safe and
economical.
1. Introduction
The world population is increasing rapidly, and the world economy is also growing.
Road transportation is the most accessible form of transportation, and there is a need for
a system that can handle large masses of people safely and be environment friendly.
Various societies and associations have been set up to develop intelligent transportation
systems, such as vehicle-to-vehicle communication, vehicle-to-infrastructure
communication, and electronic fees collection. India is in the primary stage of
development, and when implemented, the surface transportation system will be safest,
economical, and environment friendly.
2. Overview
Intelligent Transportation System technology is the application of information
technology to surface transportation in order to achieve enhanced safety and mobility
while reducing environmental impact. It aims to facilitate a national multi-modal
surface transportation system that features a connected transportation environment
around vehicles of all types, the infrastructure, and carry-in passenger devices. The
overall function of ITS is to improve decision making, often in realtime, by transport
network controllers and other users, thereby improving the operation of the entire
transport system. ITS relies on a wide range of technologies and functions such as
Communications (Microwave, internet, Bluetooth), Geographical Locations,
Geographical Information System, Data acquisition and exchange, Camera system and
Artificial vision, Detection and classification, In-vehicle systems and Digital Mapping.
This paper will discuss the potential of these transportation technologies for
sustainability of environment and various application fields.
4. Critical Appraisals
Intelligent transportation systems have both merits and demerits, such as optimum use
of road, traffic and travel data, continuity of traffic and freight management, road safety
and security, integration of vehicle and infrastructure, reduced travel time, increased
fuel economy, and environment sustainability. However, system failure can lead to
stoppage of vehicular movement and data security is of major concern.
5. Social Acceptance
The project should be accepted by the citizens of the city, who should be educated about
what they expect and the benefits of ITS. Quash rumours is a time-consuming task.
7. Conclusions
I.T.S. is essential for passenger satisfaction, encouraging public transport and reducing
the use of personal vehicles. It also contributes to saving the environment from vehicle
pollution and reducing congestion on city wads.
