Movie

For our Bachelor Project we need to write a thesis and next to that create a product related to
our research. Our product will consist of four videos, three of them will be about the myths of
breast cancer screening and one of them will be about the screening program during the event.

The first three videos will each consist of an interview with a patiënt/survivor/person in which the
myth will be presented and in which they will be asked what the thoughts of the person are
about this statement. Thereafter a doctor will invalidate the myth and talk about the facts.

We want to include the next three myths in the videos, because research showed these are the
most common myths about breast cancer screening. We also included a goal for each video,
this is the point we want to raise in each video.

Myths
1. Once you’ve undergone breast cancer screening, it will be sufficient for your whole
lifetime.
a. Explanation: Breast cancer can arise at any time, so it is important to undergo
screening regularly. In the very early stage, it can be asymptomatic. During the
breast cancer screening program, doctors can detect breast cancer in an
asymptomatic stage. This is why breast cancer screening will lead to detection of
breast cancer in an earlier stage and result in a greater chance of survival,
because it is easier to treat.
b. Goal: Ensure that women regularly attend breast cancer screening examinations.

2. A (mammography) machine can transmit breast cancer

a. Explanation 1: Mammography or ultrasonography are reliable and safe methods
to detect breast cancer. Mammography uses little bits of radiation to examine the
breast, but according to the World Health Organisation, this is a safe amount to
use for screening and examination of the breast. Ultrasonography is based on
sound waves. This cannot do any harm to your body.
b. Explanation 2: breast cancer is not contageous, so it cannot be transmitted via a
machine. Breast cancer can occur to any woman, but some families have a
higher risk due to a genetic defect.
c. Goal: Ensure that women are not afraid of adverse health effect due to
screening.

3. There is no added value to participate in the breast cancer screening program if you do
not feel any symptoms
a. Explanation: many women only go if their doctor instructs them to do so. Breast
cancer can develop slowly and when the tumor is still small, you might not have
any symptoms. However, this is also the stage you want to detect breast cancer,
because it is easier to treat and the survival rate is higher.
b. If ≥ 1 of the following applies to you, you’re at greater risk
i. Age ≥ 50 years
ii. History of benign breast tumors
iii. Not married > 30 years
iv. Absence of pregnancy > 30 years
v. Absence of breastfeeding history > 30 years
vi. History of hormonal birth control > 10 years
vii. Presence of obesity
viii. Family history of breast cancer
c. Goal: Ensure that woman go to breast cancer screening, even if they do not have
any symptoms.
