1. Formalism (What are the forms that can be found in the painting above? Briefly describe
each.)

- Formalism is a style of painting that places more emphasis on a piece's line, color,
shape, and composition than on its subject matter or narrative substance. There are
various forms that can be recognized in the artwork Havest at La Crau.

a. Van Gogh defined the contours of the wheat fields, trees, and sky using broad
brushstrokes and lines.

b. Shapes may be seen throughout the artwork, such as the angular shapes of
the trees, the rounded forms of the haystacks, and the erratic shapes of the wheat
fields.

c. Van Gogh primarily employed warm, earthy hues in his paintings, such as
varying degrees of yellow, orange, and brown. He used them to depict the warmth and
vibrancy of the harvest season as well as a sense of light and shadow.

2. Expressionism (How do you think the artist was feeling when he created the artwork?)

- I believe Van Gogh experienced joy and optimism. It is conceivable that Van Gogh
was motivated by the beauty and diversity of the natural world around him because
the painting portrays the warm, golden light of a summer afternoon.
