July is known for it’s Nutrition Month Event. Utilizing this significant event would
be very suitable for the general theme of the Core ADA. In addition, this month is the
start of school year for most of the institution— thus, it’s a great opportunity for us to
gather more participants since most of the students aren’t yet jam-packed.
PROJECT OVERVIEW
Project Background
Every day, 95 children in the Philippines die from Malnutrition (UNICEF, 2015).
The escalating number of malnourished children in the Philippines over years is an
indication that the prevalence of this health issue doesn't get as much attention as it
needed. While there have been existing nutrition-specific and nutrition-sensitive
programs, malnutrition remains an important public health concern. Roughly, 33% of
children in the Philippines are malnourished; 30% under the age of 5 are stunted and
8% are wasted (World Bank, 2021). Whilst, the prevalence of malnutrition is high
throughout the country, the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region of Muslim Mindanao
(BARMM) remains the most vulnerable region to malnutrition with consistently exhibited
critical levels on stunting and wasting. Also, Philippines ranked as 9th In terms of
countries with the highest number of stunted children (3.6 million); 10th among
countries with highest burden of wasting; and 8% children are within the moderate or
severe wasting in the Philippines. There have been an increase of 30-40% child
mortality under the age of 10- 60 months due to malnutrition and hunger.
With that, the ADA: Nutrition and Physical Activity team crafted a specialized
webinar that would tackle the issues of Malnutrition in the Philippines as well as to meet
the objectives set such as:
1. To discuss the issues of Malnutrition in the Philippines for the last 6 years.
2. To discuss the actions and programs imposed by international organizations and
SDG to address the issue of malnutrition in the Philippines.
3. To discuss the Philippine government's action to aid malnutrition, and their future
plans about it.
Project Rationale
The prevalence of Malnutrition is what ideally inspired the team to push this
proposal. Despite the status quo, it's beyond concerning as why many people don't
recognize this issue in broader and distinct lens. Thus, our team strongly believe that
there is a need to make nutrition a top development priority alongside issues such as
COVID-19 pandemic, climate change, national security and etcetera.
Target Participants
1. Youth/Students
2. Med Students (Nutrition)
3. Health Advocates.
PROJECT SPECIFICS
Retro Type of design is the chosen theme for publication materials. This is to add some
wits and classic aesthetics to the design, and it seems like retro is kind of getting some
hype nowadays.
