Setting Out of Simple Curves

Aim: To study setting out of simple curve by

1. Linear Method (method of offset to long chord)
2. Instrument method (by using 2 tacheometers)

Apparatus: Measuring tape, Tacheometer, Ranging rods and tripod stand

Procedure:
A. Linear Method
1) Locate points O,B,T1 and T2 using the given values.
2) Calculate OA and on using the formula

D0= R −( ) 2 l 2
2

√ l 2
O x =√ R 2 − x 2 − R2 −( )
2
3) Knowing the length of Oo and On at given points, mark points on curve
using measuring tape by 3,4,5 method on either sides of Oo.
4) Once the points are marked on the ground, join all the marked points to
get the required curve.
5) Place the theodolite on T1, sight B and mark it zero and then sight T2,
similarly find angle BT2T1 in the same way as in case of angle T2T1B

such that <B= ∆ and <BT2T=<T2T1B= . Also calculate the angle
2
T1BT2 using a theodolite and arithematically.

B. Instrumental Method(not performed)

1) Set up one at DC(T1) and other at DT(T2).
2) Clamp both the plates to each other, transit to zero reading.
3) With the zero reading, direct the <OS of theodolite at T2 towards B,
similarly direct the angle of other transits T2 towards T when the
reading is 0 . Both the transits are thus correctly oriented.
4) See the reading of each of the transit to the deflection angle from the
first point A <OS of both the theodolite are thus directed towards A.
Along T1A and T2A respectively.
5) Move a ranging rod or an arrow in such a way that it is bisected
simultaneously by cross hair of both the instrument thus point A is
bisected.
6) Fix the second point B set reading A on both the instrument and
bisect the ranging rod.
7) Repeat the step 4 and 5 for location of all points.

RESULTS:
1) A curve was set out by linear and instrumental method and check was
done.
2) Also the second check was given by measuring the angle T1T2B which was equal
